MP SIT has taken major action in the case of children dying due to kidney infection due to drinking cough syrup in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The accused in the death case, Ranganathan Govindan, owner of Srisan Pharmaceutical, has been taken into custody. Chhindwara SP Ajay Pandey said that this action was taken in Chennai on the night of 8 October. After the arrest, MP SIT will bring the accused to Madhya Pradesh on transit remand. A total of 20 children have died so far in Chhindwara due to drinking spoiled cough syrup. Let us tell you that a reward of twenty thousand rupees was announced for the arrest of company owner Ranganathan Govindan.

Deaths related to cough syrup first came to light in Chhindwara and Betul districts of Madhya Pradesh, where several children died in the last two weeks. After this, incidents related to the same syrup were also recorded in some areas of Rajasthan. According to Chhindwara administration, after drinking Coldrif syrup, children showed symptoms like vomiting, difficulty in urination and high fever. During investigation, doctors found that the children’s kidneys had stopped functioning. All the deceased children were aged between two and five years. Many were admitted to hospitals in Nagpur and Bhopal, where tests found exposure to diethylene glycol in their bodies.

Screw the company and the owner

Srisan Pharma is located in Tamil Nadu. It has already been involved in quality violation cases. According to sources, the company had sent several batches of Coldrif syrup to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra without thoroughly testing it. SIT investigation revealed that the company used diethylene glycol instead of glycerol. This chemical is very harmful for the human body. Due to the same chemical, children also died in Gambia in 2022 and Uzbekistan in 2023, which were incidents related to Indian medicines.

Officials were also blamed for investigation and action
Madhya Pradesh and Central Government together have formed a joint investigation committee. In the action taken so far, the owner of the company Ranganathan Govindan has been arrested. Two medicine controllers and one deputy director have been suspended. Apart from this, the State Medicine Controller has been transferred. Chhindwara’s doctor Praveen Soni was also arrested on charges of negligence and prescribing wrong medicines. A senior officer said that this is not just negligence but a criminal matter. If it is proved that the company deliberately used poisonous chemicals, then the accused will be charged with culpable homicide (IPC 304).

After the horrific incident of the death of children due to adulterated phlegm syrup in Parasia area of ​​Chhindwara district of MP, the pain of family members is now deepening further. Those who pledged jewelry to save their children, sold and borrowed autos and today the same families are in debt. So far 14 children have died in this tragedy, while many are still fighting the war with life in hospitals.

Families lost everything in the struggle to save children

Yasin Khan of Parasia is broken after the death of his four -year -old son Used. After mild fever and cough, when the local doctor advised to give ‘Coldrif Cuff Syrup’, he did not even know that the same syrup would prove to be poison. When the son’s condition deteriorated, he first admitted to Chhindwara and then Nagpur Hospital. Khan sold his auto-rickshaw for treatment, while his wife pledged the wedding ornaments. The sad thing is that even after a million attempts, Usad could not be saved, and in the meantime his small house also collapsed.

Dual crisis broken on poor families

This story is not only about Khan. Parasia’s laborer Vikas Yadav and his wife Kunti also lost their younger son after drinking the same poisonous syrup. According to PTI, Yadav said, “We borrowed about five lakh rupees from relatives and villagers for treatment. Now there is neither son, nor any means to repay debt.” Most of the aggrieved families are daily wage laborers, whose income is limited and on which the mountain of both debt and pain is broken.

Government’s help and political rhetoric

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a grace of four lakh rupees to each victim’s family. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav went to Chhindwara and met the affected families and said that medicines in the factory in Tamil Nadu have been banned from where poisonous syrup came. He also asked to include the Center and the Tamil Nadu government in the investigation. At the same time, Congress state president Jeetu Patwari accused the government of administrative negligence and demanded the resignation of the Health Minister.

Investigation intensifies, preparations to tighten the screws on the culprits

So far, 14 children have died due to kidney failure- out of which 11 are from Parasia, two Chhindwara city and one Chaurai tehsil. Eight children are admitted in various hospitals in Nagpur. The police have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case and registered a case against the company in Tamil Nadu. The state government has promised that the culprits will not be spared under any circumstances, but this tragedy has become a life of lifetime for the houses where the innocent laughter is now silent forever.
