The students of IIT Kanpur have set an example. Students have proved that even small initiatives can lead to big changes. With the help of just Rs 20 per month, these students are feeding healthy food to 230 needy children five days a week. This initiative taken by the students of IIT Kanpur has been named Panchamrit, which has now become a real nectar for children. At the same time, this initiative is also being linked to children’s education.

The initiative is not only feeding the children but also connecting them with studies.

Many families living around IIT Kanpur campus are financially weak. For the children of these families, Opportunity School is being run in the campus since 1964, where free education is provided. With time, the school administration realized that many children were not able to concentrate on studies, the main reason for which was hunger and malnutrition. Many children used to bring tiffin, but the food got spoiled in the heat and rain. The situation was such that some children even became unconscious during class. When this problem reached the IIT campus, an initiative was taken to find a solution in 2024. On the encouragement of the professors, the students of Hostel 5 took up the responsibility of providing healthy food to the school children, after which a plan was made that the children would be given healthy and simple food like rajma-rice, chickpea-rice and kadhi-rice.

IIT Kanpur students changed photo with Rs 20

When the calculations for feeding the children were done by the IIT campus, the daily expenditure on cooking food collectively was around Rs 3000. When the calculations for the entire month were made, it was revealed that by adding only Rs 20 per student to the mess bill of about 600 students of Hostel 5, this expense could be easily covered. After this everyone agreed and for the first time in July 2024, hot and fresh food was served to 230 children. Gradually this initiative reached Hall 1, Hall 3, Hall 8 and Girls Hostel 1, where students also came forward to cooperate without hesitation. After this the children started getting food regularly five days a week.

Panchamrit changed children’s health and education

This initiative taken by the students of IIT Kanpur was named Panchamrit, which has become a symbol of collective cooperation. According to school principal Dr. Chetna Mishra, the impact of this initiative is clearly visible. Children are more active and healthy than before and they have started taking interest in studies also. The in-charge of the school, Prof. T.K. Guha says that online consent and objections are sought from students regarding this initiative, but till now no one has raised any objection. All the students are very positive about Panchamrit.

Crores of people in India consume tea or coffee early in the morning. Not only this, drinking tea or coffee several times a day, whether in office or home or anywhere else, has become necessary for us. But here it is not about elders or adult people that how often we should drink tea or coffee or why we should not drink it. Our issue is the consumption of tea or coffee by small children.

As we know, tea and coffee are consumed in large quantities in India. Often, when children’s parents or other family members drink tea or coffee in front of the children, the children also start insisting on drinking tea or coffee after seeing them and the parents also give it to them. Even many children are given tea or coffee by their family members on a daily basis and it also becomes a part of their diet. But do you know what effect drinking tea or coffee has on the health of children below 10 years of age?

Doctor warns tea and coffee are harmful for children

Dr. Syed Mujahid Hussain, a pediatrician trained at MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore, has told in his Instagram video that children drinking tea or coffee is very harmful for their health. Dr. Syed Mujahid Hussain has explained in detail in his video how tea and coffee are harmful for children.

Why does caffeine affect children more than adults?

Often people think that caffeine affects only adults, but the truth is that it has a greater effect on children. The caffeine present in tea or coffee can disturb the sleeping habits of children. According to doctors, even a small amount of caffeine can reduce both the depth and duration of sleep in children.

When children do not get enough sleep, it affects their physical growth, immunity and behavior.

How does the tannin present in tea harm children?

According to Dr. Syed Mujahid Hussain, tea contains an element called tannin, which hinders the absorption of nutrients in the body of children. Tannins stick to iron, due to which iron does not reach the body properly during digestion. Due to this, children have to face iron deficiency and later on this can cause the dangerous disease anemia.

Effect on children’s brain and nervous system

Caffeine and tea also have a deep impact on the brain of children. Its biggest impact is on the nervous system of children. Due to this, the child may become irritable and problems like lack of interest in studies may arise.

Damage to teeth due to sugary tea and coffee

According to doctors, tea and coffee are not good for small children. When sugar is added to these, it increases the risk of children getting infected with teeth, yellowing or blackening of teeth and weakening of teeth at an early age.

Doctors say that most children drink sweetened tea or coffee, due to which they get more useless calories than the body needs. This neither benefits health nor gives strength. On the contrary, teeth and overall health are harmed.

For every parent, their child is most precious. When a baby is born, it is normal to keep an eye on every small change in the baby. The baby’s smile, his first turn, sitting, crawling or walking. All these moments are very special for parents. But along with these happiness, there is also the worry that whether the child is growing properly, whether his weight and height are increasing according to his age, whether he is learning to sit, speak and walk at the right time. You can easily get answers to all these questions by looking at the growth chart and development activity of the child.

The growth of every child is different, but there are some normal standards by which we can understand whether our child is growing in the right direction or not. So let us tell you today at what age your child starts which activity and how to know whether the child’s growth is normal or not.

At what age does a child start which activity?

1. Child from birth to 6 months – The first six months after birth are most important for the growth of children. At this time their height and weight increase rapidly. Weight at birth is usually between 2.5 to 4.3 kilograms, and length is approximately 46 to 53 centimeters. By the age of 6 months, the weight increases to 6.5 to 9.5 kg and the length to about 63 to 71 cm. The baby now starts raising his head while on the stomach, tries to turn over and starts reacting to the sounds around him. Some children also start sitting with support in 5-6 months.

2. From 6 months to 1 year – This age is the time for the child to discover things. Now he learns to crawl, stand and make small sounds. In which in 8-9 months the child starts crawling, smiling at his name or looking back. After this, many children start taking their first steps between 10-12 months. By the end of the first year, the child’s weight is 8.5 to 11.8 kg and length is 71 to 80 cm.
3. 1 to 2 years of age – Now your little one gradually learns to walk and talk on his own. The child can now walk a few steps without support. Starts speaking words like mother, father. Learns to recognize things, play with toys and express his feelings through gestures. At 18 months, the weight is between 10 to 12.5 kg and the length is about 79-86 cm. By the age of 2 years, the weight reaches 11.5 to 14 kg and the length reaches 84-92 cm.

4. 2 to 4 years of age – At this age the child’s brain develops very rapidly. The child now starts speaking complete sentences, starts recognizing colors, shapes and numbers, tries to dress himself or eat food, at 3 years the weight is 13-15 kg and height is 90-96 cm, while at 4 years the weight is 14-17 kg and the height is 96-103 cm.
5. From 5 to 8 years – At this age, the growth of children slows down a bit, but both their body and mind start becoming balanced. The child now starts going to school, makes new friends and learns to remember things. Along with this, physical activities increase like running, jumping, participating in sports, it is important to take great care of nutrition at this age. At the age of 5 years, weight is 17-20 kg and height is 105-112 cm. In 8 years the weight increases to 23-27 kg and height to 120-130 cm.
What to do if the child’s growth seems slow?

If you feel that your child is not growing as per the growth chart, then first of all pay attention to his diet, sleep and daily activities. Make sure he is getting complete protein, milk, fruits, green vegetables and pulses. If no difference is seen even after this, consult a pediatrician. Many times the growth rate of children slows down due to genetic reasons, lack of nutrition or some health problem. To keep the growth of children strong and balanced, nutrients in their food are necessary like protein, calcium, vitamin D, iron and healthy fats.

Healthy diet of physical and mental development of children is very important. In fact, childhood food habits put direct effect on children’s long term health, which can lead to problems like heart disease, diabetes and obesity later. Therefore, you should decide the baby’s diet very thoughtfully.

Delhi’s Nutrition Expert Neha Bansal advises parents to avoid or give less foods that can have a negative effect on the physical and metabolic growth of children. Here we are telling you about 5 such common foods, which experts refuse to feed the children and also tell science based regions behind it.

Sweet curd or flavored yogurt: Plain yogurt is very good, but the flavored yogurts made for children often contain very much sugar, artificial color etc. These make it less healthy food and more sweets. Children should not take more than 25 grams of extra sugar a day. In many fruit yogurts, one serving can have up to 20 grams of sugar. Instead, choose plain yogurt and mix fresh fruits at home.

Processed Meet: Hot dogs, bacon and packet cold cuts have become common in children’s food, but, they usually have very high preservatives like sodium, nitrates and unhealthy saturated fats. Eating them continuously can increase the risk of increasing high blood pressure and cholesterol in the child’s teenage.
