Delhi School News: A large-scale investigation into the safety of children in Delhi’s schools has revealed serious flaws. Under the Child Protection Month campaign being run in the capital, 1677 schools have been inspected so far, out of which 774 schools did not meet the safety standards. Most shortcomings were found in private schools. The schools where deficiencies were found have been instructed to improve and now special monitoring will be kept on them.

This inspection campaign was conducted between July 13 and 24, officials said that the investigation was done as per the student safety check list prepared on a case basis by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the guidelines of the POCSO Act.

774 deficiencies found in inspection of 1677 schools

During the inspection, government aided MCD, NDMC, Delhi Cantonment Board and private schools were included. The 1677 schools inspected so far include 790 government, 812 private and 75 government-aided schools. The investigation found deficiencies in security arrangements in 270 government schools, 463 private schools and 41 aided schools. According to officials, compared to the number of schools inspected, the highest number of security lapses were found in private schools.

Campaign started on the instructions of LG and CM

This campaign was started after the review meeting held on 6th July. In the meeting, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had instructed the officials to ensure timely checking of safety standards in all the schools of the capital under Child Protection Month.

Investigation will be done again after improvement

In schools where security related deficiencies have been found, instructions have been given to make necessary improvements. After the completion of the improvement work, the concerned schools will be inspected again to ensure whether the deficiencies have been rectified or not. Officials say that the campaign was not limited to just formal action, but improvements would also be confirmed. The inspection teams include representatives of parents, Directorate of Education, Women and Child Development Department, Delhi Police and heads of the respective schools. These teams are evaluating the schools on the basis of set safety standards and wherever deficiencies are found, the process of immediate improvement is being initiated.

All 5633 schools will be investigated

According to officials, this campaign will continue until the inspection of all 5,633 schools in Delhi is completed. The objective of this initiative is to make child safety in schools a permanent part of the system and develop a culture of accountability, safety and preparedness in all educational institutions.
