China is building the world’s largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet, on which India is also keeping an eye. Now voices have started being raised against this project from within China also. This project is only 50 kilometers away from Arunachal Pradesh border of India. Tsangpo River of Tibet is known as Brahmaputra River in India. Xi Jinping’s scientist has warned that the construction of this dam will increase the risk of earthquakes and landslides.

Chinese scientists warned

According to the Chinese government, the hydropower dam on the lower Yarlung Tsangpo River is a green project to promote low-carbon-emission development. It said that the abundant water energy resources of the river will enhance the development of solar energy and wind energy in the surrounding areas and create a base for clean energy. After the completion of the project, it was said that the level of electricity, water conservation and transportation will improve. However, scientists around the world are already calling it a climate threat and now Chinese government-backed scientists are raising questions on it.

India has protested

India has repeatedly expressed concern over China’s activities on the Brahmaputra River. This can pose a threat to water security, impact on weather and people living in low-lying areas. Last month, research by China’s state-owned China Geological Survey was published in the journal Sedimentary Geology and Tethyan Geology. It was told that a seismic crack of the Paijen Fault passes exactly at the place where this hydropower project is being constructed.

There will be damage to surrounding structures

The researchers said, ‘The Pigeon Fault will have a major impact on the stability of surrounding structures including dams, roads, bridges and tunnels. Here, due to cracks under the ground, the surrounding rocks have broken and become very weak. Due to weak rock, the pillars of the dam cannot support the weight and its strength may be in danger. Because of this, the risk of any big project breaking or collapsing increases significantly.

Danger of mountain slides or landslides will increase: Report

Chinese scientists have warned that the structure of the land around the dam’s reservoir is very loose and the soil and stones there are not firmly connected. Because of this, the possibility of large-scale mountain slide or massive landslide has increased there. He also cited the 6.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Milin, Tibet in 2017 as evidence that the fault still remains a real seismic hazard.

China has started constructing a huge dam on the Brahmaputra River in South-East Tibet near the border of India. This is the same project that was approved in December 2024. Now China has also laid its foundation stone. Chinese Prime Minister Lee Kiang participated in the foundation stone program of this dam project. The program took place in the Ningchi region of Tibet, which is very close to the border of Arunachal Pradesh.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu had warned a few days ago that China is making ‘water bomb’ on the Brahmaputra river. He said that this project could become a serious threat to India’s security and existence.

China will spend $ 167 billion

China is going to spend around $ 167 billion on this project. It includes five hydropower stations. It is being told that it will produce so much electricity as it is more than the three gorges dam built on the Yangtji River.

China has linked this project to the development of Tibet region and becoming carbon neutral. According to government media, this will also meet the local power needs of Tibet.

India had already raised objection

India had expressed concern about this project in January this year. The Ministry of External Affairs had urged China to ensure that there is no negative impact in the low -lying areas of Brahmaputra. In response, China claimed that this project is safe and no one would be harmed.

What will be the effect on India?

The formation of this dam may affect the northeastern states of India, such as Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. If China stops water or its flow changes, then there may be problems like floods or droughts in the northeastern states of India.

Bangladesh can also be affected

This river leaves Tibet to India and then to Bangladesh. In such a situation, this project can also affect Bangladesh. At the same time, Chief Minister Khandu said that China has not signed any international water treaty so far. In such a situation, it is difficult to trust him. He warned that no one knows what China can do.
