Rare Earth Elements: Whenever China is angry with any country, it stops or limits the supply of rare earths (REEs) there. Recently, China has also tightened the rules regarding export of rare earths. Under this, China has made licensing mandatory for the export of seven rare earths and finished magnets. Besides, an order has also been issued not to use them in the defense sector. Due to this decision of China, it has come into conflict with America.

What is rare earth?

Rare earth is actually a group of 17 minerals. They are used in making hi-tech products in various industries. From making smartphones to electric vehicles, radar systems, missiles, drones and even generating clean energy, they are used. These minerals, which seem very simple in appearance, are very effective in their effects.

The reserves of rare earth minerals in the whole world are about 130 million tonnes. Of these, China alone has the maximum of 44 million tonnes. Whereas, if we talk about India, it has reserves of about 6.9 million tonnes of rare earth, which is about 5 percent of the world’s total reserves. Although there is no dearth of rare earths in nature, but it is very difficult to extract them because they are found in mixed form, like many times these radioactive elements are found stuck with uranium.

Why is China dominant?

China extracts 3.48 lakh tonnes of rare earth minerals, which is about 70 percent of the global production. Whereas 90 percent of its processing work is also done in China. This is because China has such technology which can easily separate rare earths. In such a situation, rare earths extracted from other countries are also sent to China for processing.

In this way, China continues to dominate the world over rare earths. However, according to the IEA (International Energy Agency) report, by 2030, China’s share in rare earth mining is expected to decline from 69 percent to 51 percent and in refining from 90 percent to 76 percent. This trend reflects a broader international effort to diversify and balance the supply chain.

These minerals are found in rare earth

Cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium, scandium, praseodymium, samarium, gadolinium, dysprosium, erbium, europium, thulium, terbium, lutetium, promethium, holmium, ytterbium.

Efforts continue to end dependence on China

The amount of rare earth that India currently possesses is less than 1 percent at the global level. There are huge possibilities for the future in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The government is continuously promoting the detection, excavation and processing of rare earths in the country’s soil.

In this connection, the government had started the National Critical Chemical Mission in 2025. In the coming time, India can also import rare earths from countries like America and Australia. Demand for rare earths may increase by 300-700 percent by 2040. Preparations for this need to start now. Meanwhile, another good news is that government company IREL (India) Limited was removed from the US export control list. This is a big step, which opens doors for international cooperation for India.

Apart from this, IREL is also going to open a new facility in Visakhapatnam, where samarium-cobalt magnets will be produced. This will further help India in becoming self-reliant in technology. This magnet is very important for high-tech defense equipment.

After a comprehensive talks between PM Modi and Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, the two countries also discussed several agreements.

Prime Minister Modi said in a statement that the two sides have targeted to double the two-way trade in the next five years and Bharat is not only a partner in Ghana’s development journey, but also co-female. The delegation level meeting between the two leaders took place a few hours after Modi reached the capital of the West African country. Modi has reached Ghana in the first phase of visit to five countries.

China mixed with India-Ghana’s partnership

Across China, rare economies are rich in minerals, but it has put full control over it. This has damaged India’s Electric Vehicle (EV) project. Now India has given a befitting reply to China by making an agreement with Ghana about rare meaning minerals. India has started a campaign to break its monopoly.

What PM Modi said about terrorism

The two countries signed four agreements in many areas including culture and traditional medicine. In the presence of Mahama, Prime Minister Modi said, “President Mahama and I have decided to give bilateral relations a comprehensive partnership status.” The Prime Minister said that both sides are unanimous that terrorism is an enemy of humanity and it was decided to further strengthen mutual cooperation to deal with this danger. Modi said, “We thanked Ghana’s support in India’s fight against terrorism.”

China water bomb effect on india: Tapir Gao, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh, expressed concern over China’s announcement to build the world’s largest dam on Tuesday (April 8). He claimed that the dam would be similar to the ‘Water Bomb’, which can bring water catastrophe in lower areas like Northeast India and Bangladesh.

The Gao made this comment at the conference on the subject of Brahmaputra ‘case of water security, ecological integrity and disaster in the sub-Himalayan region in Guwahati: Brahmaputra’s Conference. He said, “China has already decided to build a dam, which will be able to produce 60,000 MW of electricity. It will not be a dam, but a ‘water bomb’, which will be used against India and other lower coastal countries.”

Arun Gao said that the countries of East Asia including India will be destroyed

Gao claimed that the devastating floods in June 2000 were also the result of similar ‘water bombs’, in which more than 10 bridges on the Siang River were washed away. In Arunachal Pradesh, Yarlung Tsangpo is known as the Siang River, which is known as Brahmaputra after entering Assam. BJP MP from Arunachal East Lok Sabha constituency Gao said, “If China decides to release water from the dam in future, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bangladesh and other countries of Southeast Asia will be destroyed.”

Gao told what to do to avoid this water bomb

He said that he supports the proposal to construct another dam on the Siang River in Arunachal, so that the disaster in the low -lying areas can be prevented in the case of sudden release of water from the proposed dam. Gao said that concerns about the project are justified, as the water flow from Tibet may be disrupted due to the dam, which may pose a sudden flood or low water level in low -lying areas. He said, “This will have a direct impact on farming and water supply in India, especially Arunachal Pradesh and Assam as well as Bangladesh and will increase dependence on China for this important resources (water).” According to Gao, the Government of India is trying to talk to China on the issue diplomatically, so that the matter can be resolved.

China has approved the biggest dam

China had approved the construction of the world’s largest dam on an estimated cost of US $ 137 billion on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet on 25 December last year. The dam is to be constructed at the place where the Yarlung Tsangpo River turns towards the Medog County of China and then enters Arunachal Pradesh.

Thailand’s Swedish journalist also gave warning

Swedish journalist and writer Burtel Linter, who lives in Thailand, highlighted at the conference that the Chinese invasion in the Tibetan region in the late 1950s was especially targeted on numerous rivers that originated from the Tibetan plateau. Linters have a deep understanding of the politics and history of Asia. He said, “China alone has built 11 big dams on the Mekang River, which is a lifeline for five other countries.”

‘India should make a big agreement with China’

Linter emphasized that India should signed a water distribution agreement with China. He feared that in the absence of agreement, there could be “bilateral conflict” between the two neighboring countries. Writer-journalist Claud Arpi, who addressed the conference through a video conference, said that China not only wants to become a superpower by building a dam in its medog county, but also plans to turn the water of the Yarlung Tsangpo River towards the yellow river through many of its tunnels.

Chairman of Brahmaputra Board said- It is necessary to find a solution

Dr. Ranbir Singh, Chairman of Brahmaputra Board, underlined that the Brahmaputra Valley is the only water-additional river valley in India, while the rest of the valleys are lacking water. He said, “With the construction of this dam in China, will there be a shortage of water in the Brahmaputra River Valley in the future or other disastrous results, which are very important to find a solution through proper scientific studies.”

IIT professors also in tension, said we do not have assessment equipment

Professor Anamika Barua of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati said that there is a lack of information and lack of transparency from China. He claimed that the neighboring country “is not sharing information.” Barua also said, “We do not even have enough scientific data or equipment to measure the real impact on the low -lying areas from the world’s largest dam.” The conference was organized by Thinktank ‘Asian Confluence’. Experts from Vietnam, Nepal and Bhutan also participated in it.
