At least 90 people died in a massive gas explosion in a coal mine in China’s northern province of Shanxi. This is considered to be China’s biggest and most dangerous mining accident after 2009. According to government media Xinhua, this accident happened late night on Friday (22 May 2026) at Liushenyu coal mine in Qianyuan County. At that time 247 laborers were working in the mine. According to corporate data base Qichacha, this mine is operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Group Liushenyu Coal Industry. The company was established in 2010 and is controlled by Shanxi Tongzhou Coal Coking Group.

The local Emergency Management Authority said that after the accident, relief and rescue operations are being conducted on a large scale. Also, investigation into the cause of the blast has also been started. Shanxi province is considered to be the largest coal mining area of ​​China and a large number of coal mines are present here.

China’s President Xi Jinping has instructed officials that there should be no let up in the treatment and rescue work of the injured. He has ordered a thorough investigation into the accident and strict action should be taken against those responsible as per the law. China’s Prime Minister Li Qiang has also stressed on giving correct information on time and fixing responsibility. According to Xinhua report, company officials involved in mine operations have been taken into custody. Meanwhile, the Qinyuan Emergency Management Bureau said that seven rescue and medical teams of 755 people from Shanxi province have been sent to the spot.

Major accidents have happened before

In the past, serious questions have been raised regarding safety standards in coal mines in China. However, after 2000, the government tightened the rules, which reduced the accidents. In 2009, 108 people died and 133 were injured in a coal and gas explosion in Heilongjiang province.
