When the whole world is struggling with climate change and global recession, China is quietly busy strengthening its nuclear warhead. According to a recent report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China’s nuclear stockpile is now increasing rapidly.

While China had 410 nuclear warheads in 2023, this number will reach 500 in 2024. The most shocking thing is that in just one year, China has added about 100 new nuclear weapons and this pace is not stopping. Preliminary figures for 2025 show that this figure may go even higher.

India will have to make a strategy

This can affect not only Asia but the strategic balance of the entire world. The eyes of America, Russia, India and other nuclear-rich countries have now become even more alert on China’s activities. This is a warning to India that it may have to rethink its security policy and nuclear policy. Although China has publicly reiterated its policy of ‘no first use’ i.e. no first nuclear attack, its rapidly growing nuclear power is making this policy questionable.

China did the first test in the year 1964

China officially started its nuclear weapons program in 1955, which was named ‘Project 596’. It received initial technical help from the Soviet Union. After that, in the year 1964, China successfully conducted its first nuclear test. This test was conducted at a place called Lop Nur and it was a fission based nuclear bomb.

After this successful test, China became the fifth nuclear weapons country in the world. America, Soviet Union, Britain and France were already included in this list. After this, China conducted 45 nuclear tests in Lop Noor from 1964 to 1996 i.e. for 3 decades.

China is building 350 new missile silos

China accelerated development and testing of missile-based nuclear weapons. During this period, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched systems were developed. Although it has signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), it has not yet ratified it.

Since 2020, China has started rapidly increasing its nuclear weapons stockpile. According to SIPRI and the US Defense Department, if growth continues at this pace, China’s number of warheads could exceed 1500 by 2035. The SIPRI report claims that China is building about 350 new missile silos. Either these have been built or are in the construction stage.

US President Donald Trump has warned that if Afghanistan does not give back the control of Bagram Airbase to the US, then there will be serious consequences. Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, “If Afghanistan Bagram Airbase does not give it to those who made it, that is, America will have bad things.”

Trump had also said earlier that the US wants control of this base used by American forces after the September 11, 2001 attacks. On Friday (September 19), he told reporters that talks are going on with Afghan officials on this issue. The airbase went into the hands of the Taliban movement after American soldiers moved from Afghanistan in 2021.

Afghan officials have already opposed the revival of American military presence. Afghan Foreign Ministry official Zakir Jalal said on X (East Twitter), “Afghanistan and America should talk to each other but America does not need to maintain military presence in any part of Afghanistan.”

“We want Bagram back”

At a meeting with Britain’s Prime Minister Kir Starmer, US President Trump said that his administration is trying to get back the control of Bagram Airbase. He explained the main reason behind this to be closest to China’s nuclear weapons. Trump called it a complete disaster under the administration of former President Joe Biden and said that the Biden administration messed up with the US Army’s long war.

Trump said, “We are trying to get it back. We want this base back because Afghan authorities need us. We want that base back and one of the reasons is that it is only one hour away from China’s nuclear weapons construction site.”

These weapons are going to be fired by land, air and sea, causing a tremendous increase in China’s strategic strength.

Beijing has been repeatedly claiming that its no first use policy is maintained. It states that China will not use nuclear weapons first under any circumstances. Nuclear weapons will not be taunted against any non-atomic country. China’s Defense Ministry recently made a statement that the nuclear war can neither be won nor teased.

China’s claim of Pentagon is false
The US Ministry of Defense Pentagon, in its annual report, described China’s public stance as false. According to the report, China involves the first use of nuclear weapons in response to traditional attacks in its strategy. If China faced military defeat in Taiwan and threatens the existence of its rule, it can first attack a nuclear attack.

China’s nuclear stock is growing rapidly
According to Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, China currently owns about 600 nuclear weapons. About 350 new missiles are building Silo and mobile launcher bases. This expansion is faster than any other nuclear power -rich country.

China has 712 missile launcher
The report estimated that the Chinese Army People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has about 712 ground missile launchers. Out of these, 462 launchers can feature missiles that can reach America. However, many launchers are only for short distance missiles, which are mainly used to attack regional goals.
