United Nations Security Council: Now China’s reaction has also come to light on India’s claim to get temporary membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2028-29. China has said that it is keeping an eye on the news related to India’s candidature. This statement has come at a time when Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has formally launched India’s election campaign in New York. Whereas America, Russia, France and Britain have already been supporting India’s bigger role in the United Nations.

China’s statement on India’s claim

On Thursday, when Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian was asked a question on India’s candidature, he said that China has paid attention to the news in this regard. However, he did not make any clear comment regarding support or opposition to India.

Jaishankar started election campaign

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar launched the election campaign for temporary membership of UNSC for 2028-29 during an event organized at the United Nations Headquarters on Monday. During this period, ambassadors and senior officials of many countries were present. In his address, Jaishankar said that India’s approach towards the United Nations is based on peace, trust, respect for rules and honesty. He also told what priorities India would work on in the Security Council if elected.

China still silent on permanent membership

China is included in the five permanent and veto power countries of the United Nations Security Council, but it has not yet openly supported India’s permanent membership in the Security Council. On the other hand, America, Russia, France and Britain have supported India’s permanent membership many times.

Will compete with Tajikistan

Elections for the 2028-29 term of the UNSC will be held in June next year. India will compete with Tajikistan for a seat in the Asia-Pacific group. India has previously been a temporary member of the Security Council in 2021-22. Apart from this, India has also been a member of this council in 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92 and 2011-12.

India has been repeating the demand for reform in UNSC

India has long been saying that the current structure of the UN Security Council is almost 80 years old and needs reform in line with today’s global challenges. India believes that developing countries should get more representation, so that their participation can increase in global decisions. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Harish Parvatneni also said that the Security Council has not been able to play an effective role during the ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world. Therefore, reforms in the United Nations and global institutions are the need of the hour.

America has arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro along with his wife. China has reacted after this incident. China’s Foreign Ministry has issued a press release strongly condemning America’s action, calling it an open use of military force against a sovereign nation. The statement said that such military action against the President of a sovereign country is a serious violation of the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. China says that this attitude of America reflects its hegemonic thinking.

China warned that this action of America not only harms the sovereignty of Venezuela, but also endangers the peace and security of the entire Latin America and the Caribbean region. Beijing clearly said that such steps promote regional instability.

Appeal to America to follow the law and charter

In its statement, China has appealed to America to respect international law and the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. Also, immediately stop actions that violate the sovereignty and security of other countries.
