Taiwan has taken a big decision to strengthen its security. In view of the threat of a possible attack from China, the government has proposed an additional defense budget of US $ 40 billion. This money will be spent in the coming years to build a new and modern multi-layered air defense system T-Dome. This is the first time that Taiwan is bringing forward such a big security investment plan.

American pressure and increasing defense spending
This decision has come at a time when America is continuously demanding Taiwan to increase its defense budget. The Taiwan government has said that this special budget will be spent in phases between 2026 and 2033. President Lai Ching-te has already talked about taking defense spending to 5% of GDP. Currently, Taiwan has increased the defense budget for 2026 to $31.18 billion, which will bring the total defense expenditure to 3.3% of GDP. President Lai wrote in the Washington Post that the new budget will be mainly used to buy arms from America. According to Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Ku, $40 billion is the upper limit of the budget and will be used for precision strike missiles, joint weapons development and military technology procurement.

What is T-Dome and how will it work?
This defense system was announced by President Lai on 10 October. He compared it with Israel’s famous Iron Dome, but said that its capacity would be much greater than that. According to defense experts, T-Dome will deal with many types of threats, not just small rockets. This system is being designed to stop attacks like Chinese fighter planes, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones.

Super-network will be built by connecting to the existing defense system
Taiwan already has many important air defense systems-

US Patriot PAC-3 missile system

Indigenous Sky Bow and Tien Kung System

NASAMS system will be available soon
T-Dome will connect all these with modern radar, sensors and a command center to form a single defense network, which will be able to rapidly detect the threat and destroy it immediately.

T-Dome will have two main parts

According to national defense experts, in this system-

Command and Control System – which will take data from all radars and sensors and decide which missile to fire at which threat.

Interceptor layers- where missiles will be deployed at different heights and distances, so that every incoming missile or drone can be stopped.

Why did Taiwan find this system necessary?
Taiwan has learned from the Ukraine-Russia war that only a modern air defense system can save civilians, military and important places. Experts say that if Taiwan is able to stop China’s initial missile attacks, then Beijing will think twice before attacking. According to the report, China has the capability to fire hundreds of missiles in just three minutes from ships and land-based launchers deployed around Taiwan.

Amidst the increasing tension in Asia regarding Taiwan, China has given a stern warning to Japan. China’s Defense Ministry said on Thursday (27 November 2025) that if Japan interferes in Taiwan’s affairs or crosses the line, it will have to pay a very painful price. This statement has come when Japan is preparing to deploy missiles on one of its islands about 100 kilometers away from Taiwan.

China angry over Japanese missile deployment near Taiwan
Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi recently confirmed that plans to deploy medium-range surface-to-air missiles on Yonaguni Island are moving forward. This island is just 110 kilometers away from the east coast of Taiwan. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has already said that if China launches a military attack on Taiwan, Japan can respond militarily, after which the tension in the relations between the two countries has further increased.

Japan has no right to interfere in Taiwan – China
Responding to Japan’s plan, China’s Defense Ministry spokesperson Jiang Bin said, the Taiwan issue is entirely China’s internal matter. Japan has nothing to do with it. He further said that Japan is forgetting its 1895-1945 colonial rule over Taiwan and is not learning from history.

Jiang warned that if Japan crossed the border even by half a step, it would have to suffer painful consequences. The Chinese army has the full capability to stop any enemy.

Taiwan said- our land, our decision
The Taiwan government again rejected China’s claims and said that only the people of Taiwan will decide what their future will be. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te this week announced plans to spend an additional $40 billion on defense over the next eight years. China reacted to this by saying that this money would be ‘wasted’ and would only cause loss to Taiwan.

China itself is increasing spending, why not us?- Taiwan’s answer
On China’s opposition, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh said, China’s defense budget is many times more than Taiwan’s. If China wants peace then it should use this money for the welfare of its citizens. Liang also said that the increasing tension between the two sides is harmful for everyone. Taiwan has alleged that China’s military is carrying out activities in the sea and airspace around Taiwan almost every day, which it calls a tactic of pressure and intimidation.
