West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Thursday (September 18, 2025) that the state government has released 840 prisoners serving life imprisonment since 2011, all of whom had served a sentence of more than 14 years. The CM has also announced that after the appropriate legal process, now 45 additional prisoners are being released.

He congratulated the persons and their families released and said that his good behavior during imprisonment was a major factor of this decision. Mamta said in the post on ‘X’, ‘Our government has legally released many prisoners who have served life sentence.

Good behavior during imprisonment

Mamta Banerjee said, ‘Since 2011, 840 such people have been released. 45 more prisoners are being legally released. I congratulate him and his families. Emphasizing the rehabilitation role of correction homes, he wrote, ‘I know that his behavior was good during imprisonment. This release is proof of this.

The Chief Minister hoped that the released prisoners would spend a improved life. He said, ‘I hope that these prisoners released will become good citizens in their new and free life and only then our efforts will be successful.’
