The pockets of Mumbaikars are going to be loose once again. CNG prices have been increased again in Mumbai. New prices of CNG have come into effect from today (Thursday, May 14) in Mumbai Metropolitan Region i.e. MMR. Now CNG will be filled at the price of Rs 84 per kg.

Mahanagar Gas Limited i.e. MGL has decided to increase the price of CNG by Rs 2 per kg. After this increase, the retail price of CNG in MMR has now become Rs 84 per kg. That means, CNG gas which was available till now at Rs 82 per kg, has increased to Rs 84 per kg. These new rates have been implemented from midnight on Thursday (May 14).

CNG autos and taxis will be more affected

The reason for the increase in the price of CNG is being attributed to the crisis in the global energy market due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the increase in fuel purchase cost. The increased prices are likely to have the biggest impact on auto rickshaw and taxi drivers running on CNG.

Common people are troubled by inflation

On one hand the prices of CNG are increasing, on the other hand the passengers traveling by auto-taxi daily are worried. People say that the household budget is already deteriorating due to inflation. Now the cost of transport will also increase. It will be difficult to go to work every day. At present, the Transport Department and the concerned authority have not taken any decision regarding increasing the fare, but it is feared that the burden of increase in gas prices will fall on the passengers.

CNG Price Hike in Maharashtra: Mahanagar Gas Limited has increased the prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kg in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), taking its price to Rs 84 per kg at the retail level from May 14. This new price will be applicable in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas of MMR. Earlier the price of CNG was Rs 82 per kg. The new rates have come into effect from midnight on May 14, 2026.

What is the new rate now?

Now the new rate of CNG in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and surrounding areas has become Rs 84 per kg, which was earlier Rs 82 per kg. At the same time, the new price of CNG in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi has now become Rs 92.25 per kg.

Why did prices increase suddenly?

According to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), the cost has increased due to rising global crude oil prices and importing expensive gas from international markets. The fall in the Indian rupee against the dollar has made gas imports more expensive, so efforts were made to balance it by increasing prices.

This increase is expected to increase the operating expenses for public transport and private vehicle owners using CNG in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to MGL, about 12.8 lakh vehicles in MMR run on CNG. These include about 4,70,000 autorickshaws, more than 1,60,000 taxis and more than 5,00,000 private cars.

After the increase, autorickshaw unions demanded change in fares. The unions have demanded an increase of at least Re 1 in the base fare, saying frequent fuel price hikes are hurting drivers’ earnings.
