LPG, CNG, PNG rates today: The ongoing tension in West Asia has affected energy supply across the world. As geopolitical tensions are increasing, there are concerns about the rising prices of LPG, CNG and PNG in the country and their availability. Users across the country are closely monitoring the frequent changes in fuel prices as India is highly dependent on West Asian countries for energy.

India imports more than 40 percent of its crude oil and 90 percent of LPG requirement from countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar. However, despite this dependence, the government has assured that the supply of LPG remains stable and there are no reports of any shortage at distributorships.

government’s efforts

Meanwhile, the central government has allowed ad-hoc allocation of kerosene under the Public Distribution System (PDS) in 21 states and union territories to meet household cooking and lighting needs amid global energy supply pressures. These areas also include those areas which were earlier declared ‘kerosene-free’.

Although priority has been given to domestic consumers in the supply of available LPG, due to limited stock, people have started panic buying and long queues have formed at the distribution centres. To ease the pressure on LPG, the government has allowed temporary use of kerosene for cooking and lighting across the country—including 21 states and union territories that were earlier declared kerosene-free. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas issued a notification on March 29, allowing temporary relaxation under the ‘Petroleum Act, 1934’ and ‘Petroleum Rules, 2002’. This will ease the distribution of PDS kerosene in specified states and union territories. Additionally, conditions related to storage, security and licensing will also be applicable to ensure compliance with rules and timely supply.
