According to the news of news agency Reuters, the Global Health Agency has identified a specific batch of Shreesan Pharma’s Coldrif, Rednex Pharma’s Respifresh TR and Shape Pharma’s Relip syrup, in which adulteration has been found. WHO Says that these syrups can pose a health risk. Due to this, serious and even fatal diseases can occur.

Dangerous chemical found in cough syrup

During testing, a poisonous chemical called diethylene glycol was found in these cough medicines, which was used in large quantities. The important thing is that this chemical has neither any color nor any smell. Therefore, it is difficult to identify it without investigation. It is used to sweeten the syrup. The surprising thing is that the use of diethylene glycol is dangerous for human health.

Srisan Pharma’s license canceled

The license of Srisan Pharmaceutical Company of Tamil Nadu has been completely canceled. Now an order to close the company has also been issued. The state government had given information regarding this on Monday. During an inspection, officials of the state drug control department found that 48.6 percent of the cough syrup contained a substance called diethylene glycol (DEG). Company owner Mr. Ranganathan was arrested recently.

Cough syrup controversy: Recently, cases of death of children have been reported in India’s Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states by drinking cold cuff syrup. As of 6 October 2025, at least 16 children have been confirmed in Chhindwara and Betul in Madhya Pradesh, while 4 other deaths have been recorded in Rajasthan. Diathylene glycol is a toxic substance, which can cause severe damage to the body. Because of this, the government banned Coldrif Kapha syrup.

Deg quantity more than the prescribed limit

The Union Health Ministry has also released information in this matter. According to the Ministry, the investigation of 6 samples taken by CDSCO (Central Drug Standards Control Organization) did not find DEG/EG (Diethylene Glycol/Ethylene Glycol).

At the same time, 3 of the 13 samples taken by Madhya Pradesh FDA were examined and they were also found free from DEG/EG. However, when Tamil Nadu FDA took samples of Coldrif Syrup from Sresan Pharma in Kanchipuram, the report on 3 October 2025 found the Deg volume above the permissible limit.

Ongoing investigation and sample testing in 6 states

In view of the seriousness of the case, investigation has been started on manufacturing sites of 19 drugs across the country. This investigation is being done under the “Risk-Based Inspection”, so that there is no flaw in the quality of medicines. Also, NIV (National Institute of Virology), ICMR, Neeri, CDSCO and AIIMS have reached the multi-disciplinary team Chhindwara and surrounding areas of Nagpur. This team is trying to find out the real causes of the deaths of children.
