The incident of death of children due to cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh has raised serious questions on the quality and monitoring of raw materials in India. The Union Health Ministry said that the ongoing controversy over the death of 20 children in Madhya Pradesh due to consumption of cough syrup is not a matter of assigning blame between the Center and the Tamil Nadu government, but first of all it is a matter of accountability. Despite clear recommendations from the Center for Food and Drug Administration, Tamil Nadu has failed to take action in this matter.

Union Health Ministry accuses Tamil Nadu government

Sources in the Health Ministry have said that this matter is not at all a blame game between the Central Government and the Tamil Nadu Government. The only question is, why has the FDA of Tamil Nadu not taken any action in this matter till now? Why did they not file criminal charges despite the recommendations made by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO)? Also, why was the license not canceled despite clear instructions from DCGI?

Tamil Nadu Drug Control Department presented 26 page report

This statement from the Health Ministry comes after the Drug Control Department of Tamil Nadu presented a 26-page report, in which it has been made clear that Shreson Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Coldrif, committed more than 350 violations. The report also revealed lack of cleanliness in the company, rusty equipment and illegal use of non-pharma grade chemicals.

CDSCO issued instructions to all states and union territories

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has taken a major step after the death of children allegedly due to spoiled cough medicine in Madhya Pradesh. On behalf of the country’s top drug regulator, Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) Rajiv Singh Raghuvanshi issued strict instructions to the drug controllers of all states and union territories. He directed that every batch of raw material and finished product should be compulsorily tested before manufacturing or selling any medicine.

Children have died due to drinking cold cuff syrup in many states. In fact, this case first came up in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, in which the kidney of young children failed due to drinking Kapha syrup and lost their lives. Now the number of deaths due to it has increased to 19. Since then, both governments and police have become serious about this matter. Children have died in many states due to drinking syrup of Coldrif Company. Madhya Pradesh Health Minister Rajendra Shukla says that from September 7, 20 children have lost their lives in Chhindwara, Betul and Pandhurna districts of Madhya Pradesh. Maximum 17 deaths have occurred in Chhindwara alone. After this, 4 new cases of death have also come up here in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, 3 children in Rajasthan had to bear the brunt of this poisonous phlegm syrup.

In which states the fear of phlegm syrup?

After the use of syrup, the health system of all the states has come into alert mode. Apart from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, there is a fear in other states as well. Due to this, the sale of cold -cuff syrup in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab has been completely banned. Apart from this, this syrup making company has shown strictness and has also ordered an inquiry into medicines.

Why is the life going through cuff syrup?

A dangerous chemical named Diathylene Glacol, present in this phlegm syrup given to young children, has killed the children. According to experts, this chemical directly damages the kidney. This is a chemical that is used in the paint industry. Drinking this provides problems like vomiting, diarrhea and a few days later, after which a person dies due to kidney failure.

Government ordered inquiry

All the plants of this deadly cuff syrup of the Coldrif Company have also taken action by the state governments, after which its extra stocks in the market have also been removed along with banning its sale. Also, instructions have been issued to examine the medicines made on all its plants.

The Punjab government has banned the sale, distribution and use of ‘cold’ phlegm syrup ‘in view of the death of 14 children due to alleged intake of adulterated drug in Madhya Pradesh. The order issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Punjab Government on Monday (October 6) said that it has come to the notice of the office that the ‘Coldriff’ syrup has been declared as “not of standard quality” by the official analyst, drug testing laboratory and FDA, Madhya Pradesh.

The batch number of the drug is SR-13, which is built by Srison Pharmaceutical, Bangalore Highway, Sunguvarchatram (Mathura), Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. The order stated, “Adulteration of the above drug has been found to be adulterated, as it has a Diethylene Glycol (46.28 percent W/V), which makes it harmful to health.”

Sales banned in Punjab with immediate effect in public interest

The order of the Punjab FDA states, “The said product has been found to be associated with the death of recently in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh, so in view of the seriousness of the case, the above product is completely banned for sales, distribution and use in the state of Punjab with immediate effect in public interest.”

The order also states that all retailers, distributors, doctors registered in Punjab, hospital and healthcare institute etc. will not procure, sell or use the said product.

It has been said in the order that if any drug reserves are available in the state, then its information can be provided to the FDA (Drug Branch). There were reports of the death of children due to the stoppage of the kidneys in the last one month in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh.

A highly poisonous substance called Diathylene Glycol (DEG) was found in the Kapha syrup manufactured in Tamil Nadu. National health alert was issued after the death of children and officials were suspended in Madhya Pradesh, arrests were made, drug reserves were confiscated across the country, as well as strict changes in drug guidelines in states like Kerala and Karnataka.
