The undersea data cables present in the Strait of Hormuz are very sensitive and any disruption in them can have a major impact on the internet service of the entire area. If several cables are damaged simultaneously, whether accidentally or intentionally, a large-scale internet shutdown in the Persian Gulf could occur.

The Strait of Hormuz is important not only for oil but also for digital connectivity. Many large submarine cable systems like FALCON, AAE-1, TGN-Gulf and SEA-ME-WE pass through or around this route. These cables run internet, banking, cloud services and communication in Gulf countries. The problem is that all these cables are present in the same narrow area, which further increases the risk. According to the report, countries like UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are heavily dependent on these cables and any disruption can have an immediate impact on these countries.

Threat related to Strait of Hormuz

Big data center present in Gulf countries

Recently it was also reported that in Iranian drone attacks, some targets in UAE and Bahrain were targeted which were connected to Amazon Web Services. If there is even a slight loss in these, it can have a big impact on data traffic, the banking system can slow down and communication between countries can be disrupted.
