National Law Day is celebrated in India on 26 November. However, now it is being celebrated as Constitution Day. Every year this day reminds of the adoption of the Constitution of India. On this day, different programs are organized in government departments and schools across the country.

Why is Constitution Day celebrated?

It is noteworthy that on 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India. However, it was implemented on 26 January 1950. The idea of ​​celebrating November 26 as the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution came when a proposal was made to assess the state of law in the country.

This decision was taken in 1979

Former MP LM Singhvi, while proposing in the Supreme Court Bar Association, said that November 26 should be celebrated as National Law Day. The Supreme Court Bar Association gave the green signal to LM Singhvi’s proposal in 1979. After this, this day continued to be celebrated as National Law Day till 2015.

PM Modi had made this change

In October 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that 26 November will now be celebrated as Constitution Day in the memory of the creator of the Constitution, Dr. BR Ambedkar. In this way, on 19 November, a gazette notification was issued by the Central Government, in which 26 November was declared as Constitution Day. Since then this day is celebrated as Constitution Day. However, it is also known as National Law Day.

Why is this different from January 26?

Let us tell you that both the dates of 26 January and 26 November are related to the Constitution, but our Constitution was prepared on 26 January 1949 and it was assimilated by the Constituent Assembly, whereas the Constitution came into force in the country on 26 January 1950. In this way, 26 January came to be known as Republic Day and 26 November as National Law Day. According to a report, it took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to create the Indian Constitution. That day was 26 November 1949, when the Constitution was completely ready.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (26 November) appealed to the citizens to follow their constitutional duties and said that this is the foundation of a strong democracy. In a letter to citizens on Constitution Day, PM Modi also stressed on the responsibility of strengthening democracy by exercising the right to vote. He suggested that we celebrate Constitution Day by honoring those who vote for the first time after completing 18 years of age.

PM Modi recalled Mahatma Gandhi’s belief that rights are acquired by the discharge of duties. He emphasized that discharge of duties is also the basis of social and economic progress. He said that the policies and decisions taken today will shape the lives of the coming generations and appealed to the citizens to keep their duties paramount as India moves towards the vision of a developed India.
