After the swearing-in of the new CM in Manipur, unrest started again on Thursday (5 February 2026). There were protests against the new government in Churachandpur district of the state, after which there is an atmosphere of tension in Tuibong area. The situation remained tense throughout the day, leading to fierce clashes between protesters and security forces. To ensure that the situation does not worsen, heavy deployment of security forces has been made in the area.

Kuki community issued warning

Kuki groups warned MLAs of their community not to participate in Manipur government formation. Also called for a complete shutdown in Churachandpur and protests at many places.

Yumnam Khemchand Singh took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Manipur on Wednesday (4 February 2026). He handed over this post to BJP leader N. Took over almost a year after Biren Singh’s resignation from the post of Chief Minister. BJP MLA Nemcha Kipgen, who belongs to the Kuki community, and Naga People’s Front MLA L. Dikho has taken oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur.

Call for complete bandh in Churachandpur

After this development, the tribal organization ‘Joint Forum of Seven’ (JF-7) of Churachandpur district has called for a complete bandh in Kuki-Jo dominated areas from 6 am to 6 pm on Friday (6 February 2026). Reiterating the demand for a separate Kuki administration, the organization has appealed to all members of the community to join the protest in a democratic manner.

Kuki Jo Council said that if any MLA from the community ignores the collective decision of the organisation, he will do so in his individual capacity and the organization will not be responsible for the consequences arising from such ‘unilateral decisions’. Some Kuki militant organizations have also issued a stern warning to the community’s MLAs against participating in government formation.

Protest against new CM in Kangpokpi district

Near Leimakhong in the Kuki-dominated Kangpokpi district on Wednesday, protesters burnt tires and placed bamboo poles on the road to protest the swearing-in of Nemcha Kipgen as deputy chief minister. Caste violence has been going on in Manipur since May 3, 2023, which started after a tribal solidarity rally was taken out in the hill districts. This rally was taken out in protest against the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of the majority Meitei community.
