What is NB.1.8.1 variants?

This variant was discovered by the Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium of India in Tamil Nadu for the first time during January 2025. WHO has categorized it as a variant under monitoring (vum). NB.1.8.1 has extra spike mutations T22N, F59S, G184S, A435S, V445H, and T478i, which makes it more contagious than Omikron sub-variants. Experts say that NB.1.8.1 sub-variants are less likely to cause serious illness, but the death of the girl in Noida has challenged the notion that Kovid-19 is completely safe for children.
