BMC Election 2026 Result: The election results of all 227 wards of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have come. After this, the political equations of Mumbai are once again in discussion. In the elections, BJP won 89 seats, Shiv Sena 29, Congress 24, Shiv Sena (UBT) 65 and MNS 6 seats. Meanwhile, let us know whether the newly elected corporators will start getting salary from the day of victory? Let us know what is the answer to this question.

Will salary start from the result day?

Winning the BMC elections does not mean that any corporator will start getting money from the next day. In fact, no payment is made between the announcement of the result and the first official meeting of the corporation. Until the oath is taken, the elected member is not a legally functioning corporator.

Payment starts after oath

According to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888, the tenure of a corporator officially starts from the day of the first meeting of the newly formed corporation. This term begins when the elected members take oath. Only after this ceremony the corporator becomes eligible for honorarium and allowances.

Corporator does not get salary but honorarium

Meanwhile, let us tell you that BMC corporators are not government employees. Because of this, they do not get fixed salary like officers or ministers. Instead they are given an honorarium. This is as compensation for public service rather than as full-time wages.

How much does a BMC corporator earn?

According to the revised rates applicable from 2017, a BMC municipal servant gets an honorarium of ₹ 25000 every month. Apart from this, municipal servants also earn meeting allowance for attending general body meetings, committee meetings and standing committee sessions. This adds to their monthly income.

Apart from honorarium, corporators also get many non-cash benefits. This includes free travel in BEST buses, reimbursement of telephone bill, medical insurance and some travel related allowances. Also, let us tell you that the Mayor of Mumbai officially gets only a basic honorarium of about ₹ 6000 every month. But when allowances, protocol benefits and government facilities are included, the monthly benefit is estimated to be ₹ 50000 to ₹ 55000. Apart from this, the mayor is also given a government house, car, driver and support staff.

After the big victory of Bharatiya Janata Party in the municipal elections of Maharashtra, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation i.e. BMC is once again in the news. BMC is counted among the largest municipal corporations of Asia. The role of this Municipal Corporation is very important in running a metropolis like Mumbai with a population of crores. The responsibility of basic facilities like water, roads, sanitation, health and education rests on the shoulders of BMC. The strongest link of this entire system are the municipal councilors, who are directly connected with the public and put forward their issues.

The honorarium received by BMC councilors has changed with time. Before 2017, councilors used to get only Rs 10,000 per month. Even at that time, this amount was considered very less compared to his work and responsibilities. Councilors have to go to their wards every day, listen to people’s complaints, meet officials and attend many meetings. Apart from this, many times they have to spend from their own pockets among the public.

increase in honorarium
Due to rising inflation and increasing workload, in July 2017, BMC decided to increase the honorarium of councilors. After this, the monthly honorarium of councilors was increased to Rs 25 thousand. This decision was taken so that councilors can concentrate on their work without financial pressure.

However, it would be wrong to assume that every councilor gets the same fixed amount every month. The total income of BMC councilors is not completely fixed. Their income depends on many things. The most important thing in this is his presence in the meetings. Councilors get additional allowance for attending the meetings of the General Assembly, Standing Committee and other committees of the Municipal Corporation.

The total monthly income of councilors who regularly attend meetings and remain active in committees increases slightly. At the same time, councilors who are less active or attend meetings less do not get that much additional amount. For this reason, the earnings of each councilor may be different.

Many facilities are available

Apart from salary, many important facilities are also given to BMC councilors, so that they can do the development work of their ward properly. Every councilor is given a fixed fund for ward development. This fund is used for works like building roads, cleaning drains, installing street lights, improving water supply, parks and toilets.

This fund is not the same for every ward. Some wards of Mumbai are very large and densely populated, while some wards are relatively small. On this basis, the fund is decided keeping in mind the needs of the ward. Councilors can get small and big development works done in their area through this fund.

Apart from this, councilors are also given meeting allowance and traveling allowance. This allowance is given for commuting between the Municipal Corporation headquarters and the ward. This provides some relief in the personal expenses of the councillors. Sometimes a separate allowance is also given for special meetings, government programs and inspections.
