A relief news is coming for lakhs of government teachers across the country. The fear, tension and confusion that had been prevailing for a long time regarding the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), now there is hope that it will be put to an end. Especially those teachers who have been teaching in schools for many years, but due to some reason have not been able to pass TET till now, serious questions were raised about their future.

After the Supreme Court’s decision in September 2025, the situation had become even more difficult. The court had clearly said that it will be necessary for all teachers to pass TET. After this, it had a direct impact on crores of primary and upper primary teachers of the country. Many teachers who have been serving for 10–15 or even 20 years suddenly start feeling insecure. He was afraid that if he could not pass TET, he would lose his job or he might have to retire prematurely.

Pressure to teach or preparation for exams?

Non-TET teachers were constantly raising the question whether they should focus on teaching children or prepare for the exam to save their jobs. It is not easy for teachers to take the exam again. For this reason, teacher organizations have repeatedly demanded before the Central Government and the states that old and experienced teachers should be exempted from the requirement of TET or they should be given some special relief.

Important step of central government

Now the Central Government has taken a big and important step in this direction. The Department of School Education and Literacy of the Education Ministry has sought detailed reports from all the states and union territories. The ministry has said that complete details of those teachers from class 1 to class 8, who were appointed before 2011, should be given.

States will have to provide this information by January 16. For this, a letter has been sent to the Chief Secretaries of all the states on December 31. Many important information have been sought in this report, like how many teachers were appointed before and after 2011, how many teachers have passed TET or CTET, how many teachers have not been able to pass TET till now, teachers’ age, educational qualification and training status. This step of the government clearly indicates that it wants to understand the entire matter seriously and does not want to take any decision without complete information.

Lakhs of teachers hope for relief

It is expected that about 12 lakh teachers will get relief from this initiative of the Central Government. There are a large number of teachers in different states who have not yet passed TET. About 1.86 lakh teachers in Uttar Pradesh, about 80 thousand third grade teachers in Rajasthan, about 3 lakh teachers in Madhya Pradesh and about 27 thousand primary teachers in Jharkhand, all these teachers are directly affected by this decision and now they have big expectations from the government.

What was the decision of the Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court had said in its decision that teachers who are not TET eligible will have to pass the exam within two years. If they are not able to do this, they may have to leave the job or may be retired. However, the court had also said that teachers who have only five years left in their service can be given some relief.

What will happen next?

Now everyone’s eyes are fixed on the decision of the Central Government and the states. If the government decides to exempt old and experienced teachers from TET or make some alternative arrangement, then it will provide relief to lakhs of families. In the coming times, this step of the government can give a new direction to the future of teachers.

Now if you are dreaming of becoming a teacher from 9th to 12th grade, then get ready to work a little more. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make a big change. Now to teach from 9th to 12th grade, the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) exam will have to be given. For this, CBSE is going to release a new guideline soon. Know about this new rule in detail.

What is CTET and what was its scope?

CTET is an examination of National Level, which is conducted by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and CBSE. This examination is for those who want to become teachers in schools related to Central Schools like Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya or CBSE. Till now CTET was held at two levels.

Paper 1: This is for those candidates who want to teach from class 1 to 5.

Paper 2: This is for candidates wishing to teach from class 6 to 8.

Candidates can give both papers according to their will, but now this scope is being increased. Under the new rule, it will be mandatory to pass CTET to become a teacher from 9th to 12th grade.

What does the new rule say?

CBSE and NCTE are working on this new rule together. After this, now the CTET exam is likely to be held at four levels. These four levels will be like this.

Class 1 to 5 (Paper 1)

Class 6 to 8 (Paper 2)

Class 9 to 12 (new paper)

Bal Vatika (for Elementary Education)

This means that now CTET will have to take the examination to become a high school teacher. This rule will be applicable to all schools affiliated to CBSE. Apart from this, a separate examination can also be started for Bal Vatika (Elementary Education).

When will the new rule apply?

According to reports, CBSE will soon release a new guideline. If the guideline is issued on time, then this rule can apply from this year or next year. Due to some internal exams of the board, it is getting a little delay. If everything goes well, CTET can be held at three or four levels in 2025.

What was the qualification to become a 9th-12th teacher till now?

Till now, the candidate needed a degree of B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) and post graduation to teach from 9th to 12th grade. In some schools, it was not mandatory to pass CTET, but it depended on their will, but it is already necessary to pass CTET in schools associated with CBSE. After the new rule, now CTET will be compulsory for the teacher of 9th to 12th in all CBSE schools.
