Children have died due to drinking cold cuff syrup in many states. In fact, this case first came up in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, in which the kidney of young children failed due to drinking Kapha syrup and lost their lives. Now the number of deaths due to it has increased to 19. Since then, both governments and police have become serious about this matter. Let us know how many innocent people have killed this poisonous phlegm syrup?

How many children have lost their lives till now?

Children have died in many states due to drinking syrup of Coldrif Company. Madhya Pradesh Health Minister Rajendra Shukla says that from September 7, 20 children have lost their lives in Chhindwara, Betul and Pandhurna districts of Madhya Pradesh. Maximum 17 deaths have occurred in Chhindwara alone. After this, 4 new cases of death have also come up here in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, 3 children in Rajasthan had to bear the brunt of this poisonous phlegm syrup.

In which states the fear of phlegm syrup?

After the use of syrup, the health system of all the states has come into alert mode. Apart from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, there is a fear in other states as well. Due to this, the sale of cold -cuff syrup in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab has been completely banned. Apart from this, this syrup making company has shown strictness and has also ordered an inquiry into medicines.

Why is the life going through cuff syrup?

A dangerous chemical named Diathylene Glacol, present in this phlegm syrup given to young children, has killed the children. According to experts, this chemical directly damages the kidney. This is a chemical that is used in the paint industry. Drinking this provides problems like vomiting, diarrhea and a few days later, after which a person dies due to kidney failure.

Government ordered inquiry

All the plants of this deadly cuff syrup of the Coldrif Company have also taken action by the state governments, after which its extra stocks in the market have also been removed along with banning its sale. Also, instructions have been issued to examine the medicines made on all its plants.

Questions are constantly being raised on Kapha syrup in India, after which many states have started taking action. After the death of many children from drinking phlegm syrup in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the Union Health Ministry also issued advisory and said that children below 2 years of age should not give phlegm syrup.

NHRC issued notice to these state governments

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh governments to investigate the allegations of death of children due to contaminated phlegm syrup and impose immediate ban on the sale of fake drugs. A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court in the death of children with cuff syrup. The petitioner has demanded an inquiry under the supervision of the former judge of the Supreme Court of the construction, testing and distribution of medicines. The petition has also been demanded to hand over the investigation of the death of children to the CBI.

Maharashtra government issued warning

The Maharashtra FDA has issued a public warning that Respifresh TR and Releiff Cuff Syrup have more toxic diyethylene glycol (DEG) more than the safe range. Sales, delivery or use are prohibited and licenses must report any stock immediately.

The Tamil Nadu government has released a 44 -page report regarding this, which has made shocking revelations. 39 serious and 325 big flaws came out in Kachipuram, a company that makes a coldfire company.

Big disclosure in Tamil Nadu on Coldrif making company

According to the report, the company was not following the principles of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) at any level. The company was using the non-pharmacutical grade prophet glycol in the manufacture of cuff syrup instead of the pharmaceutical grade. This chemical was purchased in a 50-50 kg pack on different dates. Payment was made through cash or Google-Pe.

Tamil Nadu government suspended factory license

Diathylene glycol 48.6 percent and ethylene glycols were found in the purchased proposee glycol, which are extremely toxic elements and prove to be fatal for human body. Medications were made and stored in an atmosphere filled with dirt, mud and insects, there was no drain system, causing rats, insects to enter. Tamil Nadu government has suspended the factory license with immediate effect

Coldrif Kapha Syrup ban in Punjab

In Punjab too, Coldrif Kapha Syrup has been banned. Food and Drug Administrator Punjab has taken a decision in view of the deaths in Madhya Pradesh. Dr. Praveen Soni, accused in the Cuff Syrup case in Chhindwara, has been sent to a judicial custody till August 9. There have been 21 deaths in Madhya Pradesh due to Kapha Sairaf, out of which 18 children died in Chhindwara, 2 in Betul, 1 in Pandhurna. In Rajasthan too, there have been three deaths due to Kapha Sairaf.

Coldrif Kapha Syrup ban in Kerala too

In Kerala, Coldrif Cuff Syrup has been banned. State Health Minister Veena George said on Tuesday (7 October 2025) that a committee has been formed to submit a report on the management of cuff syrup. He said that we are making sure that this phlegm syrup should not be sold in private hospitals and drug stores. He further said, “We have already done this in terms of antibiotics and they are being strictly followed in the state.

Coldrif Kapha Syrup has been banned in Uttar Pradesh. Raids are also being conducted in many places in UP to stop the sale of cold -cuff syrup. UP Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said, “It is very sad that many children have lost their lives after consuming phlegm syrup. Our government never bought such a cuff syrup.”

After the horrific incident of the death of children due to adulterated phlegm syrup in Parasia area of Chhindwara district of MP, the pain of family members is now deepening further. Those who pledged jewelry to save their children, sold and borrowed autos and today the same families are in debt. So far 14 children have died in this tragedy, while many are still fighting the war with life in hospitals.

Families lost everything in the struggle to save children

Yasin Khan of Parasia is broken after the death of his four -year -old son Used. After mild fever and cough, when the local doctor advised to give ‘Coldrif Cuff Syrup’, he did not even know that the same syrup would prove to be poison. When the son’s condition deteriorated, he first admitted to Chhindwara and then Nagpur Hospital. Khan sold his auto-rickshaw for treatment, while his wife pledged the wedding ornaments. The sad thing is that even after a million attempts, Usad could not be saved, and in the meantime his small house also collapsed.

Dual crisis broken on poor families

This story is not only about Khan. Parasia’s laborer Vikas Yadav and his wife Kunti also lost their younger son after drinking the same poisonous syrup. According to PTI, Yadav said, “We borrowed about five lakh rupees from relatives and villagers for treatment. Now there is neither son, nor any means to repay debt.” Most of the aggrieved families are daily wage laborers, whose income is limited and on which the mountain of both debt and pain is broken.

Government’s help and political rhetoric

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced a grace of four lakh rupees to each victim’s family. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav went to Chhindwara and met the affected families and said that medicines in the factory in Tamil Nadu have been banned from where poisonous syrup came. He also asked to include the Center and the Tamil Nadu government in the investigation. At the same time, Congress state president Jeetu Patwari accused the government of administrative negligence and demanded the resignation of the Health Minister.

Investigation intensifies, preparations to tighten the screws on the culprits

So far, 14 children have died due to kidney failure- out of which 11 are from Parasia, two Chhindwara city and one Chaurai tehsil. Eight children are admitted in various hospitals in Nagpur. The police have formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case and registered a case against the company in Tamil Nadu. The state government has promised that the culprits will not be spared under any circumstances, but this tragedy has become a life of lifetime for the houses where the innocent laughter is now silent forever.

Many states have banned this poisonous medicine amid reports of death of children due to consumption of phlegm syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) launched 19 drugs including cuff syrup and antibiotics in six states.

The Union Health Ministry said on Friday (October 03, 2025) that six samples of drugs tested by CDSCO and three samples investigated by Madhya Pradesh Food and Drug Administration (MPFDA) were found to be free from dyethylene glycol (DEG) and Ethylene Glycol (EG) contaminants, which are known to causing serious harm to kidney.

Excess of DEG in samples

Investigation revealed that this syrup was built in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. The ministry said that the results were shared with us late Friday evening. The quantity of DEG in samples was higher than the acceptable limit. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu government banned the sale of cuff syrup and ordered it to be removed from the market.

Regarding increasing incidents, the Central Government issued a consultation to all states and union territories and directed that children below two years of age should not be given cough and cold medicines. DGHS under the Ministry of Health said in consultation that cuff syrup is not usually recommended for children under five years of age.

Uttarakhand government also took action

Amid reports of death, the Uttarakhand government on Saturday launched a raid on medical stores and wholesale drug vendors across the state. Officials said that on the instructions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, joint teams of Health Department and Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) are raiding medical stores, wholesale drug dealers and hospitals in all districts of the state.

Gujarat government ordered an inquiry

At the same time, the Gujarat government has also come into action regarding these incidents. The Gujarat government on Saturday ordered an inquiry to find out the presence of any harmful element in the phlegm syrup sold in the state. Gujarat Health Minister Rishikesh Patel said that while looking at the news related to the death of children, the state’s health and family welfare department sought to know if these phlegm syrups were purchased by GMSCL.

The minister said, ‘It was found that none of these companies are in our buyer list. However, as a precaution, we have ordered an inquiry to find out what these harmful elements are present in all the phlegm syrup currently sold in Gujarat.

‘Cold’ syrup banned in Madhya Pradesh too

On the other hand, the sale of ‘coldfrife’ syrup has been banned on Saturday after the death of nine children due to suspected kidney infection in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on ‘X’ on Saturday, ‘The death of children in Chhindwara due to cold syrup is very sad. Sales of this syrup have been banned throughout Madhya Pradesh. Other products of the company making syrup are also being banned.

He said that this syrup was built in a factory in Kanchipuram and after the incident, the Madhya Pradesh government has requested the Tamil Nadu government to conduct an inquiry. The Chief Minister said that the investigation report was received on Saturday morning and strict action has been taken. Action continues at the local level after the tragic deaths of children. The culprits will not be spared at any cost.

Ban on the sale of ‘cold’ phlegm syrup in Kerala also

Apart from this, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Saturday that the state’s drug control department has banned the sale of ‘cold’ phlegm syrup in the state. George said that this decision has been taken after the report received from other states, in which a problem was said in a batch of ‘Coldrif’ syrup.

The minister clarified in a statement that a preliminary investigation by the State Drug Control Department has revealed that the identified batch of the drug was not sold in Kerala. He said, ‘Due to safety concerns, the drug controller has instructed the drug inspectors to completely ban the distribution and sale of’ Coldrif ‘.’

Why is phlegm syrup fatal?

According to the INS report, Dr. Dhiren Gupta, a pediatric co-director of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, spoke in detail about the deaths due to the deaths due to Kapha syrup. He says that this is not a new problem. In India and other countries, cases of deaths from phlegm syrup have been reported for the last several years.

According to Dr. Gupta, the main problem is that the pharmacological grade ingredients for the use of humans are often replaced by cheap and low quality industrial grade ingredients. This provides poisonous elements like ethylene glycol in the syrup, which damages the kidney and causes kidney failure, causing children to die many times.

The loss causes children in three stages

Dr. Gupta said that cuff syrup damages the child in three stages. After drinking the first syrup, there are problems like vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. In the second phase, crystals are formed in the kidney, causing the kidney failure. In the third phase, the brain is affected. This process is very deadly.

Deadly cough syrup: Recently, the news from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan has shocked the entire country. So far, 11 innocent children have died in these two states. And initial investigation has revealed that these deaths may cause two brand cough syrup. As soon as this matter came to light. The health department of these two states has immediately banned the sale and distribution of these syrup.

Samples have been sent to the lab for investigation and medical teams from the center to the state level have become active. At present, instructions have been issued to doctors and pharmacy stores that no child should be used by these syrups. Even if the symptoms of cough and cold are not modest. The investigation teams are trying to find out what such thing was found in the syrup. Who killed children.

Dangerous chemicals found in syrup

In the preliminary inquiry, the Health Department suspects the presence of poisonous chemicals like dietaline glycol in syrup. This is the same chemical that has become the cause of death of children in many countries before. The names of these syrups are being described as Coldrif Cuff Syrup and Nexa DS Kapha Syrup. According to officials, the syrup making company did not follow all the standards of safety testing.

Also read: If you bought 5 kg of silver today, then how much will the price be in 2050, know the account

And without complete investigation, the medicine was launched in the market. Now FSSAI and Drug Control Department has ordered to return every bottle of that batch from the market immediately. Pharmacists have also been kept on alert so that no one accidentally sells these drugs.

Such deaths occurred in Gambia and Uzbekistan

This is not the first time that children have lost their lives due to phlegm syrup. A similar incident took place in the African country of Gambia in the year 2022. Where about 70 children died due to poisonous syrup. In that case also the syrup was a drug made in India and it was found to be chemicals like diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. After this, 19 children died of cuff syrup of another Indian company in Uzbekistan.

After these two incidents, questions were raised on the drug manufacturing process of Indian pharma companies internationally. Now that similar incidents have come to light in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. So the central government has ordered an inquiry to the drug departments of all the states to ensure that such negligence is not repeated in any other state.

The Union Health Ministry on Friday (3 October 2025) clarified that no Diathylene Glycol (DEEG) or Ethylene Glycol (EG) was found in the samples of phlegm syrup collected from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Both these chemicals are known for causing serious harm to the kidneys and have been associated with the deaths of children in many countries earlier. According to the ministry, the expert team formed at the national level conducted a thorough investigation of the samples and no contamination was revealed in the report.

Recently, news of the death of 11 children in Chhindwara and Rajasthan in Madhya Pradesh was revealed. The dead children were between 1 and 7 years of age and were found in symptoms like kidney infection and not urinating. After the apprehension that deaths may be associated with phlegm syrup, the Center immediately sent the National Disease Control Center (NCDC), National Institute of Virus Sciences (NIV) and Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) for investigation. The State Food and Drug Administration of Madhya Pradesh also investigated three samples independently and confirmed the absence of DEEG or EG.

CSF samples check
NIV Pune examined the blood of the dead and CSF samples. One of these cases was found to be leptospirosis positive. Water samples, insect carriers and respiratory investigation are still going on in other laboratories. This means that the cause of the death of children was not directly found, but the possibility of other reasons is being investigated. Investigation of the deaths of two children in Rajasthan revealed that propilin glycol was not present in the suspected cough syrup, which could sometimes become a source of DEEG or EG contamination. This syrup was found to be dextromethorphon-based, which is not recommended for children.

Advisory issued by DGHS
The Ministry of Health has issued advisory to states and union territories quoting Director General of Health Services (DGHS). It says that most of the cough in young children is cured on its own and children under two years of age should not be given phlegm syrup at all. It is advisable to use it carefully even in older children. The ministry said that natural measures like hydration and rest are more safe for children. States have been instructed to promote these guidelines in primary health centers, community health centers, district hospitals and medical colleges so that people can get the right information.

The Central Government has issued advisory on the concerns about the possibility of death of children due to consumption of cough medicines (phlegm syrup) in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Apart from this, the central and state agencies also jointly investigated. Investigation has confirmed that poisonous chemicals are not present in the syrup.

Do not give phlegm syrup to children under 2 years of age

The central government has said that indiscriminate use of phlegm syrup in children can prove to be dangerous. Keeping this in mind, DGHS of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that children below two years of age should not be given phlegm syrup.

Center and state agencies investigated

Investigations so far have confirmed that toxic chemical dietaline glycol (DEG) or ethylene glycol (EG) is not present in cough drugs. These chemicals are considered to be the cause of severe kidney damage. In the case of Madhya Pradesh, the team of National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), National Institute of Virology (NIV) and Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) went on the spot and investigated.

Many samples were collected with the help of state authorities, including Kapha syrup of various companies. According to the test report, the presence of DEG or EG was not found in any sample. At the same time, Madhya Pradesh State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has also confirmed this by examining three samples.

 Two deaths in Rajasthan

Apart from this, blood/CSF samples of children were examined in NIV Pune, one of which was found to be a case leptospirosis positive. At the same time, investigation of water, mosquito -borne carriers and respiratory samples is still going on. The deaths of two children in Rajasthan were said to be associated with cough medicine. However, the investigation has revealed that the relevant drug did not have propylene glycol, which is considered a possible source of poisonous adulteration like DEG or EG.

It has also been revealed that the concerned drug is dextromethorphon based, which is not recommended to be used in children. The investigation team consists of NCDC, NIV, ICMR, AIIMS Nagpur and state health officers, which are investigating all possible causes.

After the death of 12 children after drinking phlegm syrup in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the central government has taken a big decision. Advisory has been issued by the Health Ministry in this regard, in which children younger than two years have been advised not to mix syrup. Also, children have been told how to feed syrup.

This advice given in advisory

In the Advisory of the Health Ministry, it has been clearly stated that if the child is younger than 2 years, then the parents should not give him a cough and cold medicine at all. Do show him to the specialist doctor. These medicines are not usually given to children under 5 years of age. Give medicine to children older than 5 years when the doctor considers it necessary after examination. These children should be given very little dose. Apart from this, use the correct combination of medicines. The ministry says that firstly home remedies and without medication, try to take care of children. Take care of a lot of water, resting and good care etc. in these.

Advisory also states that every hospital, drug store and health center should ensure that it only buy safe medicines with good manufacturing practice (GP) and give to children. The Ministry has instructed the health officers of the states and districts to send these advisory to government hospitals, primary health centers (PHC), Community Health Centers (CHC), district hospitals and medical colleges.

What did you get in the syrup investigation?

Significantly, after the death of children in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the government ordered an inquiry into the syrup. After this, the joint team of National Institute of Disease Control (NCDC), National Virus Sciences (NIV) and Central Drug Standards Control Organization (CDSCO) investigated. Also, samples of many cough drugs. Investigation revealed that any sample did not have dangerous chemicals such as Diathylene Glycol (DEG) or Ethylene Glycol (EG). They can damage chemical kidney.

According to the report, these chemicals were not found even in the investigation of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) of Madhya Pradesh. In a case related to the cases of children’s death, leptospirosis infection was found, which is currently under investigation.

The Health Department has finally presented its clarification on the controversy over the syrup of cough in Rajasthan. After the death of two children in Bharatpur and Sikar districts, questions were being raised about cough dictionary dextromethorphan. But the department says that death in both cases did not happen directly due to syrup.

The department made it clear on the basis of the investigation report that the doctors had not given this medicine to the children. Despite this, action has been taken to suspend a doctor and a pharmacist for prescribing a banned cough medicine for children in a case in Sikar district.

Health Minister had ordered immediate investigation

As soon as the matter came to light, Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khivansar ordered an inquiry immediately. After this, RMSCL (Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation Limited) banned the supply and distribution of related medicines. A three -member committee was formed and the samples of the drug were sent to the state medicine test laboratory.

Father gave medicine to the child himself

30-year-old Monu Joshi, a resident of Kalsada village in Bharatpur, went to CHC Kalsada on 25 September for the treatment of cough-cold and fever. There, the doctor gave him some medicines, including cough drug dectrumatrophon hydrobromide.

The problem occurred when Monu Joshi gave the same medicine to his three -year -old son Gagan without asking the doctor. Gagan was already suffering from colds and pneumonia. When the condition worsened, he was immediately taken to the doctor and then referred to JK Lone Hospital, Jaipur.

The doctors treated and Gagan’s health improved. He was also discharged from the hospital on 27 September. That is, the news of death in this case turned out to be completely different.

The emperor of Bharatpur was already ill

Three children drank cough medicine, in which one died. Investigation revealed that the child who died was already suffering from pneumonia. On 18 September, her mother Nahni went to sub -station for treatment, where normal medicine was given.

When the condition became critical, the emperor was referred from Bharatpur to Jaipur. He died on 22 September during treatment. That is, death was not directly related to cough medicine.

Mother herself drinks syrup in Sikar

An investigation was also done on the death of a child named Nityansh of village Khori in Sikar district. According to the report, on July 7, the child was shown in Chirana CHC, Jhunjhunu on the complaint of fever and cold. There the doctor did not write daxtromathorphan’s medicine.

But on the night of 28 September, when the child had a mild cough, his mother gave this syrup of 5 mL of cough already kept in the house. The baby was fine at night, but found unconscious in the morning. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

It has been clearly stated in the investigation report that the child died not by the medicine written by the doctor, but by giving the medicine already present in the house.

Doctor and pharmacist suspended at elephant PHC

Investigation also revealed that a doctor and pharmacist had written a banned drug of cough to the children on the elephant PHC of Sikar district. On this, the department has taken tough steps and started the action to suspend Dr. Palak (doctor) and Pappu Soni (pharmacist).

Health department issued advisory

After these incidents, the department has issued advisory regarding all doctors and common people. According to the department, doctors should follow the prescribed protocol while writing medicine.

Children should never be written dextromethorphon medicine. The patient should not take the medicine without doctor’s advice. The medicine should always be given on the basis of prescription of the doctor.

Public Health Director Dr. Ravi Prakash Sharma said that the state level control room (0141-2225624) can be contacted 24 hours for prevention, treatment and information from seasonal diseases and general diseases.

It became clear from the investigation that the reality is different from the two children who were being linked to the cough syrup in Rajasthan. In one case, the parents themselves gave medicines without advice, while in another case the child was already suffering from serious illness.
