Cuttack violence: After the clash during the Durga Murti Visarjan Yatra, there was a tense situation in Cuttack city on Sunday. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief Naveen Patnaik appealed to the citizens to maintain communal harmony. The appeal came after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organized a motorcycle rally in the evening, disregarding the order of the district administration.

• The rally started from Vidyadharpur, the eastern outskirts of the city and passed through the Dargah market and other major areas. During this time, the CCTV cameras installed on the route were damaged and the shops in Gaurishankar Park area were set on fire.

• There was a clash near Hathi Pokhari in the Dargah market area between 1.30 and 2 pm on Saturday. The mob threw stones and glass bottles from the roofs, injuring many people, including DCP player Rishikesh Gyan Dev.
• Six persons were arrested for involvement in the violence.
• After the incident, the presence of police in Cuttack was increased and internet services were banned to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation.
• According to officials, violence erupted when some local people objected to playing music in a loud voice during the immersion journey. The debate gradually turned into a confrontation.

A day after the violence between the two communities erupted during the Durga idol immersion, there was tension in Cuttack city of Odisha on Sunday (October 5, 2025). Meanwhile, the Odisha government on Sunday (October 5, 2025) suspended the Internet and social media platforms in large parts of Cuttack city for 24 hours.

The state’s home department issued an official notification saying that this decision has been taken to prevent the spread of excitement and inflammatory messages on social media, so that public peace and order remains.

According to the notification, this suspension will be effective from 7 pm on Sunday (October 5, 2025) to 7 pm on Tuesday (October 7, 2025). During this time, all online messaging services of mobile internet, broadband and WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram and Snapchat will be completely closed.

At the same time, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has convened a 12 -hour bandh in the city on Monday (October 6, 2025). The immersion activities stayed for about three hours due to protests by members of the puja committees demanding immediate arrest of the people involved in the attack. The process started again amidst tight security and all the remaining idols were immersed by 9.30 am on Sunday (5 October).

Six people arrested so far in the case

According to the police, six people have been arrested so far and efforts are on to identify other people based on CCTV footage, drone footage and eyewitnesses. The VHP accused of administrative failure and demanded immediate transfer of DCP and District Collector for inability to maintain law and order. The organization has called for a bandh from morning to evening on Monday (October 6) in protest against this.

Demand for strict action on anti -social elements

A VHP spokesperson said, “Despite repeated requests, the officials failed to ensure peaceful immersion.” Biju Janata Dal (BJD) convicted anti -social elements for efforts to spoil communal harmony, while Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi assured strict action against the people responsible for this and directed the officers to provide free medical services to the injured.

Prohibition of implemented to prevent stress from increasing

Additional police forces have been deployed in sensitive areas of Cuttack and prohibitory orders have been implemented to prevent further tension. Senior police officers are keeping a close watch on the situation.
