The confrontation between the Tibetan religious leader Dalai Lama and China has once again come to light. On Wednesday (July 2, 2025), China reiterated that the 15th Dalai Lama can be elected only with the approval of the Chinese government.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning told the news agency AFP, “The process of rebirth of the Dalai Lama, Panchan Lama and other great Buddhist leaders will be determined by lottery and with the approval of the Central Government from the ‘Golden Arn’ (Golden URN).” A few hours ago, the Dalai Lama dismissed any interference of China and said that his successor would be selected according to the traditional Tibetan Buddhist system and not from any political order.
