India has prepared plans to build at least 208 hydroelectric projects in the Brahmaputra River Basin in response to China’s massive hydropower projects. All these projects will be built in 12 sub-basins, which will achieve the capacity of producing about 65,000 MW of electricity. At present this scheme is under the supervision of the Energy Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

China’s answer to the dam
According to officials, China is building a 60,000 MW capacity dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo river in Tibet (known as Brahmaputra in India and Jamuna in Bangladesh), which will be the world’s largest hydro project. In response to this, India plans to ensure balanced use and safety of water resources by building several small and big projects on the entire stretch of the river.

Biggest Project- Siang Upper Multipurpose Project
The largest among India’s proposed projects is the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), which will have a capacity of 11,000 MW. It is proposed to be built in Arunachal Pradesh, but has been stalled for a decade due to local opposition. In May 2025, NHPC has restarted the survey work in police security.

Importance of Brahmaputra Basin
The Brahmaputra river basin extends to Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and West Bengal. The region holds 80% of India’s total untapped hydropower potential, of which Arunachal Pradesh alone has 52 gigawatts (GW) of potential.

Existing and new projects
Currently, projects with a capacity of about 4,807 MW are underway in the Brahmaputra Basin, while projects of 2,000 MW are under construction. The new scheme includes large hydro projects as well as pumped hydro storage and small (<25 MW) projects.

China’s dam called ‘water bomb’
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu had said that China’s dam is being built very close to the state border and it can prove to be a threat like a ‘water bomb’. He warned that ‘this could become an existential crisis for our tribes and livelihoods.’ The Foreign Ministry has said that India is keeping a close eye on China’s activities. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar had formally raised this issue during his visit to Beijing in July.

To tell how Pakistan can harm India, Munir gave an example, saying, “I will use a simple example to explain the situation. India is a gleaming Mercedes coming on the highway like Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of junk, brick-stone. If this truck is tracked from that car, then what is the cash?”

Munir told the attack on India

Pakistani Army Chief Munir said, “We will start from the east of India, where they have established their most valuable resources and then moving towards the west.” The image of Field Marshal Asim Munir is religiously that of a staunch general. Bangladesh dam: Bangladesh is allegedly constructing another dam near the Muhuri river in South Tripura, due to which there has been a possibility of flooding in the surrounding towns in the state. This development took place amid increasing tension between India and Bangladesh. On Saturday (April 18, 2025), CPM MLA Dipankar Sen from Belonia demanded immediate intervention from the Union Home Ministry on the issue.

According to the Times of India report, he quoted local residents as saying that the dam is about 1.5 km long and 20 feet high. Dipankar Sen said, “According to the Indira-Mujib agreement, no country is allowed to construct within 150 yards of the zero line, but this embankment has been built at a distance less than 50 yards and less than 10 yards at some places. Many water lifting projects were stopped in South Tripura due to the objection of Bangladesh under this section.

‘CMO waiting for report’

Sources in the CMO quoted that they are waiting for the report on the issue, while the local police said that they would investigate the incident. SP South Tripura Maurya Krishna C Sen said, “The matter has come to our notice and we are investigating it. At the moment, there is nothing to worry about.” He said that Bangladesh is continuously using 10 draggers with continuous operations.

This issue has arisen in the assembly

More than 500 families living in Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar and Ishaan Chandra Nagar Gram Panchayats located on the northern bank of the Muhuri river near Belonia city on the Indo-Bangladesh border are afraid of floods during the monsoon. With the construction of this dam, the river water will stop and potentially Belonia can flood the city. In January this year, CM Manik Saha raised the matter of construction of a similar dam on behalf of Bangladesh in Kailashahar in Unakoti district. Local Congress MLA Birjeet Sinha had taken up the matter in the assembly and also told about the risk of flood and external threats.

Despite this, Bangladesh continued the construction work and due to this, India had to start a project to construct a large dams than the height of Bangladesh around Kailashahar to prevent the monsoon floods in the Manu River.
