<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Women sleep problems:</strong> A new study recently revealed that women of the age of 80, whose sleep increases during the day, may double the risk of dementia. However, this study does not prove that sleeping during the day leads to dementia, but it shows a strong relationship between the two. Sleep is very important for our brain. It gives the brain a time to relax and energy, so that we can think and remember things. But sleeping patterns can change with aging, and this was the main theme of this study.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>About study</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The study was done by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, which was led by Dr. You Lang. It consisted of 733 women, whose average age was 83 years. When the study started, there was no memory or thinking problem among these women. These women were tracked for five years.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Sleep patterns and results</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">By the end of the study, 164 women (22 percent) received mild cognitive important and 93 women (13 percent) dementia. To understand the sleep pattern, all the participants wore their wrist devices for three days, which recorded their sleep and day and night routine.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Researchers found that there was significant change in the sleep of more than half of women in five years. They were divided into three groups-</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Stable or slightly better sleep (44 percent)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Decline in night sleep (35 percent)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Increasing sleep in both day and night (21 percent)</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Dight sleep and rising sleep</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The quality and time of sleep in the falling group of night sleep decreased. These women used to nap in a long time and the routine of sleeping became unusual.<br />In the growing sleeping group, sleep became long in both night and day, but their sleep rhythm worsened.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Dementia risk</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">When researchers saw the risk of dementia, the growing sleeping group found the highest risk. In this group, 19 percent of women had dementia, while in a stable sleeping group it was 8 percent and night sleeping groups were 15 percent. Other reasons such as age, education, caste, diabetes and high blood pressure, researchers found that the risk of dementia in women with rising sleeping groups doubled from a stable sleeping group. The interesting thing is that there was no significant increase in risk in the falling group in the night sleep.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Sleep and the health of the elderly</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Dr. Lang said that sleep, nap and routine of our body can change a lot in only five years. Therefore, while studying brain health in the elderly, it is necessary to pay attention to all aspects of sleep, not just night sleep. Most of the participants involved in the study were white, so its results cannot apply to all castes and groups. The future requires more diverse and large studies.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This research was funded by US National Institute of Health and National Institute on aging. The study has been published in the Neurology Journal. This study contributes significantly to understanding the relationship between day and night sleep and dementia risk in elderly women.</p>
