After the death of contract nursing worker Deepak, the anger of the nursing staff in Rajasthan has come out openly. The case of Deepak committing suicide by consuming poison after being removed from the job has raised many questions regarding the health system of the state. In protest against this incident, nursing workers in government hospitals across the state have gone on an indefinite strike since Saturday (June 13).

A large number of nursing workers are sitting on strike in the SMS Medical College campus of the capital Jaipur. During the demonstration, the employees raised slogans against the government and demanded justice for Deepak’s family. The protesters say that Deepak’s death is not just the death of an individual but symbolizes the suffering of the contract workers.

Compensation and job demands

The nursing workers who are on strike have put forward many demands before the government. Among these, the main demands are compensation of Rs 1 crore to Deepak’s family, government job to one member of the family and providing accommodation. Employees say that the government should show sensitivity in this matter and provide immediate relief to the family.

Nursing workers say that about 7 thousand contract nursing staff have been serving in the state for a long time, but till date they have not been regularized. They allege that recently many employees were removed from service, due to which the feeling of insecurity has increased among them. The protesters are demanding immediate reinstatement and regularization of all the terminated employees.

Dissatisfaction regarding allowance also

The employees sitting on strike also expressed their displeasure regarding their financial condition. He says that despite working for a month, he gets only Rs 7,000 as allowance. According to the employees, it is difficult to run a family with such a small amount, yet they had been working for years in the hope that they would get permanent appointment in the future.

The effect of the nursing staff strike is now clearly visible in the hospitals. Health services have been affected at many places and patients are facing problems. This movement has received support from many opposition parties including Congress.
