India’s big food delivery company Zomato (now Eternal) is once again in the news. This time the reason is the decision related to the salary of the company’s founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal. Deepinder Goyal has made it clear that he will not take any fixed salary from the company for the next two years. He has taken this decision at a time when the company’s stock has gone up rapidly and Eternal’s hold in the market has become stronger.

According to company documents, Deepinder Goyal has refused to take his annual salary till the end of financial year 2026. Earlier too, he had not taken salary for three years, which was from the financial year 2021 to 2024. Now he has taken this decision forward and extended it till March 2026. Deepinder Goyal had given this information in a letter written to the company’s board on April 1, 2024. He said that he will continue to fulfill the responsibilities of Managing Director and CEO without any fixed salary.

Will you not get any income at all?

Although Deepinder Goyal will not get a fixed salary, but he will be entitled to the amount (variable pay) based on performance. The company’s board will decide on this later. That means if the company performs well, they can get bonuses or other benefits.

How much stake does Goyal have in the company?

Deepinder Goyal holds 4.18 percent stake in Eternal (Zomato). According to the data of November 2025, the value of this stake has been estimated at more than Rs 10 thousand crores. There has been a tremendous rise in the shares of the company in the last one year. Zomato’s shares have increased by more than 140 percent in the year 2025. At the end of November, the share price had reached around Rs 277. Goyal’s stake has directly benefited from this boom.

Eternal’s strong hold in the market

At present the total market value of Eternal is around Rs 2.45 lakh crore. It has gone far ahead of its big rival Swiggy. Swiggy has recently entered the stock market, but its market value is still much less than Eternal. Eternal has now joined the select new technology companies which have got a place in the Sensex. This is considered a big achievement in itself.

Shares rise after QIP

The company has recently received approval to raise Rs 8,500 crore. This is called Qualified Institutional Placement i.e. QIP. As soon as this news came out, a rise of about 6 percent was seen in the company’s shares. The company has fixed the minimum price of shares for QIP at around Rs 266. If necessary, some relaxation can also be given in this.

Where will the money raised be spent?

Eternal has made it clear that the money raised from QIP will be used for the expansion and strengthening of the company. The biggest part of this will be spent on opening warehouses and dark stores, so that fast delivery can be further strengthened.

Apart from this, a huge amount will be spent on advertising, branding and marketing. The company will also focus on improving the technology further, so that the app and delivery system can be stronger than before. The remaining amount will be used for daily expenses and other needs.

Big focus on quick commerce

The company is paying special attention to Eternal’s quick commerce service Blinkit. Blinkit is already in a strong position in this sector. Now the company wants to overtake companies like Swiggy and Zepto. After QIP, the company will have cash of about Rs 19 thousand crore. Due to this, the competition is expected to intensify in the coming time.

How much salary will the new CEO get?

The company has not yet given any clear information regarding the salary of new CEO Albinder Dhindsa. However, market experts believe that the new CEO may get fixed salary, bonus and share options. This package will be decided according to the performance and responsibility of the company.

Deepinder Goyal Resigns: Deependra Goyal, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zomato and Blinkit’s parent company Eternal, resigned from his post on Thursday. Giving information about this decision in a letter written to the shareholders, Goyal said that now the command of the company will be taken over by Albinder Dhindsa, who has been appointed as the new CEO.

Why resign from CEO?

Referring to the company’s growth, team’s contribution and future strategy, Goyal in his letter said that the leadership change is a necessary step for the next growth phase of Eternal. He expressed confidence that under the leadership of Albinder Dhindsa, the company will take both the Zomato and Blinkit brands to new heights.

He said that with this change, Eternal will be able to focus more seriously and will get a chance to work on new ideas. This development has come at a time when Eternal has been asked to compensate a total of Rs 27.56 crore along with interest and penalty of Rs 2 GST.

When was the company started?

It is noteworthy that in the year 2008, Deependra Goyal along with Pankaj Chadha started Zomato. Initially this platform was known as ‘Foodiebay’, which was later rebranded as Zomato. Recently, during a podcast, Goyal had revealed that earlier also he had made up his mind to leave the post of CEO and had also made an offer in this regard.

According to Goyal, he finds himself more comfortable and effective in the role of Chief Product Officer (CPO) than as a CEO of a large organization, where he can work directly on product development and innovation.

Zomato: Deepinder Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato’s parent company Eternal, has said that the company’s food delivery unit (Zomato) fires about 5000 gig workers every month. He revealed this while talking in the podcast of YouTuber Raj Shamani.

Lakhs of gig workers leave their jobs on their own

He also said that apart from being fired from the job, about 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh gig workers leave the job on their own every month. Apart from this, the company hired around 1.5-2 lakh new people every month. Till the last quarter, food delivery was Eternal’s biggest business. Then it was overtaken by its quick commerce unit Blinkit.

However, Gurugram based Zomato is still the biggest profit earning engine for the company, Apart from Zomato and Blinkit, Eternal District also runs an outgoing business on labels and a business-to-business (B2B) grocery supply vertical Hyperpure,

Reason for mass layoffs

Regarding people leaving the job of delivery boy on a large scale, Deepinder said, many people consider this role to be temporary. Some people choose this work in case of sudden need of money and then leave the job after earning money as per need.

Talking about large-scale retrenchment of people from jobs, Deepinder said that many times there are fraud related incidents behind this, such as delivery partners showing the food as delivered even when it was not delivered or cases where customers were promised change for cash-on-delivery orders, but they never received it.

Facilities for gig workers

He also wrote on the facilities provided to gig workers, the demand for PF or guaranteed salary for gig workers like full-time employees is not right according to the model for which it has been created. This is because there is no fixed shift for delivery partners. They are not assigned any fixed location for work. They themselves decide when to log-in and log-out. Or they have to deliver to some place in the city. They choose their own location. They have the freedom to add or remove locations for work as per their choice.

Gig Workers Strike on New Year Eve: The news of a nationwide strike by gig workers on New Year’s Eve certainly raised concerns among consumers, especially whether services like 10-minute delivery would be affected. However, despite the ongoing strike demanding better working conditions and higher pay, Zomato and Swiggy completed a record number of delivery orders on New Year’s Eve.

Gig workers strike has no effect

While this did not indicate any major impact on the business of Zomato and its quick-commerce unit Blinkit, on the other hand the debate intensified on social media whether the 10-minute delivery model puts additional pressure on delivery riders.

Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal responded to this entire matter on social media platform X. He said in the post that there was talk of a strike by gig workers for the past few days, but despite this, Zomato and Blinkit completed the record delivery a day before. Goyal clarified that during the 10-minute delivery, there is no compromise on the safety of the riders and the major reason for the criticism regarding this model is the lack of complete understanding among the people regarding the design of the system.

Goyal said – fast delivery is determined by infrastructure

Explaining in detail how the 10-minute delivery works, Goyal said that the responsibility of fast delivery does not depend on the speed of the riders, but on the strong infrastructure. According to him, this facility is possible because of the dark stores located near the customers’ homes.

He said that there is no expectation from the delivery partners to drive fast. Under the process, picking and packing is completed in just two and a half minutes after the order is received on Blinkit, while the remaining time covers a distance of about two kilometers, which equates to an average safe speed of about 15 kilometers per hour.

Zomato hikes platform fee: Food delivery company Jomato and Quick Commerce App Blinkit’s parent company Eaterial has increased its platform fees. The company announced on Tuesday that now 10 rupees platform charge to be taken from customers has been increased to Rs 12. That is, an increase of about 20% has come into force. Significantly, the company first started the platform charge on 2 August 2023.

Why is this not a slight increase?

Even though this increase was just 2 rupees, but according to experts, its effect is big. It is estimated that the company fulfills around 2.5 million orders daily. In such a situation, the company can earn additional Rs 15 crore daily from platform fees. On an annual basis, this income can reach Rs 180 to 200 crore.

However, users have also expressed their displeasure over this decision. He says that while discounts and offers are being reduced on the platform on the one hand, on the other hand the platform fees are continuously increasing.
