Air pollution in Delhi and NCR has once again reached dangerous levels. The situation has worsened so much that not only has concern increased within the country but its impact has started becoming visible even abroad. Due to poor air quality, cities like UK, Canada and Singapore have issued travel advisories for their citizens. Meanwhile, the biggest question before the common people is which mask will be most effective in avoiding increasing pollution. In such a situation, let us tell you today which mask will be suitable in case of increasing air pollution.

Delhi’s air becomes severe, condition continues to worsen

On Monday, the air quality index in many areas of Delhi was recorded in the very poor category. AQI reached 493 in Anand Vihar and 498 in Jahangirpuri, which falls in the severe category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the air remained at critical level at 38 stations in the capital. Visibility has also reduced due to thick layer of smog and fog. In view of the serious situation of pollution, the Air Quality Management Commission has implemented Stage-4 of the Graded Response Action Plan.

What things should be kept in mind while buying a mask?

The most important thing while choosing a mask to protect from pollution is its filtration capacity. According to experts, to avoid this pollution, the mask should be such that it can filter very fine particles like PM 2.5. Along with this, proper fitting on the face is also important. If air is going in from the edge of the mask then it is not considered effective. Whereas a comfortable mask which can be worn for a long time is better in terms of protection.

Why are clothes and surgical masks not effective?

Cloth masks may look good, but they are not capable of stopping the microscopic particles present in urban pollution. Whereas surgical masks provide some protection, but due to loose fitting, they are not able to completely protect against PM 2.5 particles. Therefore, relying on cloth and surgical masks can be dangerous during severe pollution.

Why N95, KN95 and FFP2 are the right options?

According to experts, respirators like N95, KN95 and FFP2 are considered the most reliable for protection from pollution. When worn properly, these masks are capable of blocking up to 95 percent of fine particles. At the same time, these masks prove to be more effective for those traveling on busy roads and using public transport. Apart from this, high grade masks like N99 can provide more relief for people suffering from asthma, allergies or respiratory problems. These masks filter even very small particles. Whereas for office goers, reusable and N95 masks with replaceable filters are considered good which can be used for a long time.

Today (14 December) in the capital Delhi and NCR, the sky will be cloudy throughout the day and the wind speed will remain high. According to the India Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of severe winter in the capital and surrounding areas at present and the temperature will remain slightly above normal till December 19.

This change is not only having a direct impact on the cold pattern, but increasing pollution has also increased the problems of the people. Both weather and air quality remain the most important concerns for Delhi-NCR at this time. It is as if Delhi-NCR is covered with a white sheet.

Current weather and wind speed of Delhi-NCR

In the last 24 hours, the weather of Delhi-NCR remained dry and clouds kept coming and going in the sky. During this period, an increase in the speed of winds has been recorded. The Meteorological Department estimates that the wind speed may remain at approximately the same level on Sunday also. There is no major drop in temperature at present.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 23 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 9 to 10 degrees Celsius. This situation is considered equally applicable for the entire NCR region including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.

Increasing attack of pollution and strictness of GRAP-IV

Due to decrease in wind speed and lack of cold, the level of pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached a dangerous situation. Today’s AQI has been recorded beyond 600 in many areas, in which the average AQI of Delhi has reached 651, Noida 781, Raghubir Nagar 720, Dwarka Sector-3 800 and Adarsh Enclave 1213. A thick layer of poisonous smog is clearly visible in the NH-24 area of Patparganj.

According to CPCB, AQI has been recorded in ‘Severe’ category in many areas. In view of increasing pollution, CAQM has implemented GRAP Stage-IV in entire Delhi-NCR. Under this, strict checking of trucks and other vehicles is being done on the Delhi-Haryana border. Hybrid mode has been implemented in schools for students up to classes 9 and 11. Public, municipal corporation and private offices will work with 50 percent staff, while central government offices will shift to work from home as soon as AQI reaches 301–400.

When will the weather change and when will there be severe winter?

According to weather experts, there is no possibility of a major drop in temperature at present and till December 19, winter will be mainly limited to nights. Dr. Mahesh Palawat, senior meteorologist of Skymet Weather, said that a new western disturbance has become active in the mountains, due to which rain and light snowfall has started there. There is a possibility of another western disturbance on December 18, due to which medium height clouds can be seen in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and north-western Uttar Pradesh.

However, there is no possibility of rain in these areas at present. There may be a slight increase in the minimum temperature due to cloudy weather. There is a possibility that the temperature will start falling gradually after December 15, whereas after December 22, the effect of severe cold can be clearly seen in many parts of the country.

The country’s capital Delhi and its adjoining areas remained covered in a blanket of poisonous smog on Monday (December 8) and the air quality was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the 24-hour average AQI was 308, which is a serious warning for health. People’s problems have increased due to continuous falling air level in many areas of Delhi. People are forced to breathe this poisonous air.

‘Very bad’ air at 29 centers in the capital

According to Sameer App, till Sunday (December 7) evening, the air quality was recorded as ‘very poor’ in 29 monitoring centers of Delhi. Bawana area had the worst situation with AQI 336. At 10 am the AQI was 302 and 26 stations recorded ‘very poor’ levels. According to the board’s standards, 301-400 AQI is in the ‘very poor’ category. Delhi’s decision support system reported that transportation accounted for 16.5 percent of pollution, while industrial sources contributed 8.1 percent, residential four percent and construction activities 2.3 percent.

Burden increased from NCR districts too, air remained bad throughout the week

Neighboring districts of NCR contributed significantly to pollution. According to PTI, Jhajjar’s share was 13.9 percent, Sonipat’s 6 percent, Rohtak’s 5.2 percent and Jind’s 2.5 percent. This week, continuous fluctuations were recorded in AQI. AQI was recorded at 279 on Sunday, 304 on Monday, 372 on Tuesday, 342 on Wednesday, 304 on Thursday and 327 on Friday. The air remained in the ‘very poor’ category every day, causing the layer of smog and dust to become increasingly dense.

Slight change in temperature, effect of western disturbance

According to IMD, on Sunday the maximum temperature of Delhi was recorded at 24.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 8 degrees Celsius, both of which were below normal. The humidity in the morning was 92 percent and in the evening it was 71 percent. The Meteorological Department has predicted the minimum temperature for December 8 to be 10 degrees Celsius and the maximum to be 25 degrees Celsius. Due to the effect of western disturbance, the minimum temperature has increased by about two and a half degrees in the last three days, but the combined effect of cold and pollution seems to be making the air of the capital more heavy.

For the last few weeks, many cities of North India including the capital Delhi are in the grip of heavy air pollution. The air quality has become so bad that even breathing is becoming difficult. There is a huge threat to health from the pollutants dissolved in the air. To avoid poisonous air, people are taking help of air purifiers. Due to this, there is a sharp increase in the demand for air purifiers. According to electronics retailer Croma, sales of air purifiers have increased by 30 percent on an annual basis.

Air purifiers have become a necessity

The company said that now air purifiers are no longer being seen as a seasonal product and they have become a necessity in places like Delhi-NCR. Of the air purifiers sold from Croma, 72 percent have been purchased in Delhi-NCR alone, which shows how worried people are about air quality. After Delhi-NCR, maximum number of air purifiers have been sold in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Highest demand for HEPA filter

Experts say that to protect from poisonous air, it is necessary to have purifiers with Hepa filters and customers are also understanding this. This filter removes dust and other pollutants from the air. People are also keeping their budget in mind while buying air purifiers. About 49 percent people have bought air purifiers worth Rs 5-15 thousand.

Keep these things in mind while buying an air purifier

Filter Type- While buying an air purifier, it is important to pay attention to the filter type. Buy only purifier with HEPA filter. It can capture 99.95 to 99.995 percent particles.
CADR Rate- Clean Air Delivery Rate or CADR refers to the volume of filtered air delivered every minute. Higher CADR means that pollution will be eliminated from your room sooner.
airflow- Instead of front-only suction, a purifier with top-to-bottom or 360 degree intake will provide proper circulation.
Noise level- The air purifier has to be kept with you and if its noise level is high then it can cause trouble.

The people of Delhi are in need of fresh air at this time. The pollution in his state is so severe that it is difficult to even breathe freely. The mornings are surrounded by fog and dust. Water is sprayed on the streets, while scientists look at the thin layer of chemicals and talk about who can really clean the air? Is water alone reliable or are chemicals better at preventing airborne dust? It has been revealed in the reports. Let us know what the experts have said.

Delhi’s air is in very poor category

The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi reached 335 on Wednesday morning and was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category. This is the second consecutive day when the air quality in the capital reached dangerous levels. People got some relief on Sunday and Monday, but after Tuesday night, dust and particles again surrounded the city. Delhi government has continuously sprinkled water on the roads to control pollution. On an average, this process happens on about 3,000 kilometers of roads every day. Water collects particles and reduces dust. This method is considered simple, cheap and quickly available.

What is the safer solution, water or chemicals?

But a recent study has raised the question whether water alone is enough to eliminate pollution or whether dust-removing chemicals are more effective. A joint study by Enviro Policy Research India (EPRI) and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) revealed that chemicals can trap airborne dust for a longer period of time than water.

According to a 2018 study by CPCB, chemical dust repellents were found to be 50–60% effective, while water was only 25–30% effective. During the study, dust levels dropped by about 30% after using the chemical and remained stable for six hours. In contrast, the effect of water was visible only for 10–15 minutes, because the surface dries quickly.

How much does water sprinkling cost?

In fact, water sprinkling is the oldest and widely used solution in Delhi. Its biggest feature is that it is a cheap solution and can be easily used on every road. It costs about Rs 2160 to control 100 square meter area with water for six hours, whereas chemical dust control costs only Rs 100.

effect of chemical

However, experts advise caution when using chemicals. If used incorrectly, these chemicals can prove dangerous to the environment and public health. The thin chemical layer formed on the surface stabilizes the dust, but due to movement or air circulation it breaks. Therefore it is difficult to use it in the entire city. A senior scientist of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) said that chemical dust suppressants are used in some limited areas, where there is less movement. In other places water is suitable because it is more flexible and safe.

Delhi Pollution: There has been a slight improvement in the air quality i.e. AQI of Delhi-NCR. Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has fallen below 400, after which the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has withdrawn the restrictions imposed under Group-3. Grape-3 was implemented in the capital when the pollution level had crossed the 400 mark and reached ‘very poor’ condition.

Let us tell you, under Grape-3, many strict rules are implemented to control air quality, which include things like ban on construction work, work from home, operating schools and colleges on hybrid mode. Now that Grape-3 has been removed, these rules have also been relaxed. However, this does not mean that now all kinds of activities are allowed in Delhi. CAQM has clearly said that the restrictions of Grape-1 and Grape-2 are still applicable in Delhi.

When is GRAP-3 implemented?

GRAP system has been implemented to control air quality in Delhi-NCR. Under this, restrictions from Grape-1 to Grape-3 are implemented in a phased manner. It depends on the level of pollution when which GRAP system will be implemented. As far as Grape-3 is concerned, when the pollution level in Delhi-NCR crosses 400, then Grape-3 restrictions are implemented. Group 4 is implemented when AQI crosses 450.

What happens in Grape-3?

Under Grape-3, BS-3 petrol and BS-4 diesel light motor vehicles are not allowed to enter Delhi.

There is also a ban on diesel-powered inter-state buses, All India Tourist Permit buses and tempo travelers.

Under this, works like construction and demolition are also banned.

Transportation of dusty materials like cement, sand and fly ash is limited.

50 percent work from home is implemented in government and private offices.

Classes are conducted in hybrid mode in schools and colleges.

These restrictions will still be applicable in Delhi

Even though Grape-3 has been lifted in Delhi, it does not mean that people will be allowed to do every kind of activity. The administration has clarified that the air quality of Delhi-NCR is still bad, hence restrictions under Grap-1 and Grap-2 will still be applicable. Let us tell you which things will be banned during this period-

There will be a complete ban on the use of coal and wood in hotels and restaurants.

There will be complete strictness on old petrol and diesel vehicles.

Industrial activities remain limited, many types of industries are kept closed.

There is a ban on construction works. Collecting construction material in public places is also wrong.

Thermal power plants running on coal are closed.

There is a ban on burning garbage in the open, it is a legal offence.

Air pollution is continuously increasing in Delhi and in view of this, MCD has intensified the measures to stop pollution. Municipal Corporation of Delhi teams are now preparing to stop pollution on the roads with anti-smog guns and mechanical sweepers. Officials say that strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules, so that the air quality can be improved. In such a situation, let us tell you that if you spread pollution, then a fine of how many thousand rupees can be imposed on you?

Business is suffering so much loss every day due to pollution

Delhi’s business organization Chamber of Trade and Industry Chairman Brijesh Goyal has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi regarding Delhi pollution. He wrote to the PM that due to pollution, Delhi’s business is losing about Rs 100 crore every day. He also wrote that 20 lakh businessmen of Delhi are completely with the government. According to MCD officials, a proposal to double the parking fee will be presented in the Corporation House meeting. Its purpose is to discourage people from using private vehicles, so that the number of vehicles on the roads can be reduced and pollution can be controlled. However, the final decision on the proposal to double the parking fee will be taken only after the approval of the House.

Fine up to Rs 50 thousand for spreading pollution

Municipal Corporation Delhi has clearly said that strict action will be taken against those who violate the rules. According to the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal, those polluting may have to pay a fine ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 50,000. The corporation’s teams are constantly monitoring incidents like burning of garbage at construction sites, industrial areas and roads. According to MCD, it maintains 6,130 km long roads, for which 57,000 employees are deployed for daily cleaning. To control dust, 52 mechanical road sweepers have been installed on 3,400 km long main roads. Apart from this, 167 water sprinklers, 28 mobile anti-smog guns, 20 stationary anti-smog guns and 15 anti-smog guns have also been installed at high-rise buildings.

Pollution level in Delhi in severe category

According to the data of the Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi’s air quality index has reached the severe category for the first time this season. In many areas like Bawana, Wazirpur, Mundka and Punjabi Bagh, AQI has been recorded in severe category. For this reason, the government and MCD have appealed to the people to avoid polluting activities, otherwise they may have to pay heavy fines.

Jonty Rhodes Compare Goa And Delhi Air Quality: South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes has started a debate about the air of Delhi. Jonty Rhodes has compared the air quality of Delhi with the air quality of Goa on his X account. The coach of South Africa cricket team wrote that ‘Today when I passed through Delhi while going to Ranchi, it is always difficult to bear the wind here. I consider myself lucky that I live in a small fishing village in South Goa.

Describing the clean air of Goa, South African cricket legend Jonty Rhodes further wrote, ‘This is how the sunset looks from my house and the children seen playing football in this photo are mine. In Delhi, these children can be suggested to stay at home.

Delhi’s AQI crosses 400

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), pollution was highest in Bawana area of Delhi, AQI 412 was noted here, which shows that Delhi’s air quality has reached dangerous levels. Jonty Rhodes has also written about this on his social media account.

Cricketing career of Jonty Rhodes

The weather is expected to be clear in the capital Delhi on Sunday. The maximum temperature of the day will go up to 30 degrees Celsius. But increased air pollution can increase the problem. The AQI of the capital was recorded at 233, which is in the dangerous category. AQI has deteriorated since Diwali, although it has decreased somewhat compared to previous days, but the green signal is still not there. According to the latest report of the Meteorological Department, slight cold will be felt in the morning and evening, there is no possibility of rain.

It is only the second day of November, so it is not very cold yet, but the mist in the morning and evening will give a fog-like feeling. There is mostly less rainfall in November, so there is little hope of relief from air pollution.

Not improved since Diwali AQI

AQI 233 has been recorded in the capital, which falls in the very serious category. The level of PM2.5 has reached 228 and PM10 has reached 150. Due to which Delhi’s air is getting polluted. There is great danger in this for children, elderly people and respiratory patients. According to the data of Central Pollution Control Board, the AQI which has increased since Diwali is not coming down. Whereas today it has come down compared to 288 on Friday. Even the government’s arrangements to improve AQI are not sufficient, so be careful.

The temperature is expected to be between 18 to 30 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in Delhi on Sunday can go up to 18 degrees Celsius and maximum up to 30 degrees. The average temperature will be between 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, sunrise will be at 6:34 am and sunset at 5:36 pm. You will feel cold due to light breeze in the morning and evening, but there will be no need for warm clothes during the day.

No chance of rain in November

According to the Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of rain on Sunday. The weather will be dry. Due to smoke in the morning and evening it will look like fog. If statistics are to be believed, the average rainfall in November is 5 to 6 mm. A major reason for increase in pollution in this month after monsoon is the decrease in rainfall.

slight coolness- fog effect

With the beginning of November, mild effects of cold are visible. At night the temperature can go up to 13 to 18 degrees Celsius. Although the days are still getting hotter. But the temperature will continue to drop till the end of the month and the effect of severe cold will be seen only in December.

These days the weather in Delhi is mildly cold, there is light fog in the morning and evening and people are feeling cool but the weather is normal during the day. A good news of Delhi amid winter is that the amount of pollution in the air has improved in the last two days, Delhi’s AQI has reduced on Saturday also.

According to the Meteorological Department, there will be light fog in the sky in Delhi on Saturday, November 1. During this period, the maximum temperature here will be around 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be around 19 degrees. Due to clouds the sun also does not have much effect. However, now the pink winter is beginning to be felt.

Delhi’s air quality improved

Along with winter, the air quality in Delhi has improved compared to the past days, after the festival of Diwali, where the AQI level had gone up to around 350 in areas like Anand Vihar, Akshardham of Delhi, now it has reduced. Except Wazirpur area, AQI level has come below 300 in most of the areas.
Wazir was the most polluted area in Delhi on Saturday, today the air pollution level here was recorded at 325, which comes in the category of very poor air. The air in Anand Vihar, which was on top in terms of pollution, has improved. The level of air pollution here was recorded at 292 at 7.30 am today. Which has now moved from very bad to bad category. which are less than before

AQI of air came below 300

The amount of air pollution was recorded at 297 in Chandni Chowk area of Delhi, 291 in RK Puram, 277 in Vivek Vihar, 274 in Sonia Vihar, 257 in Dwarka Sector 8, AQI level of 255 in Burari area, AQI level of 252 in Alipur area and 215 in Najafgarh. This air comes in bad category. At the same time, AQI of air on Lodhi Road in Delhi was recorded at 149 which falls in the moderate category.

In the month of October this year, Delhi’s AQI did not cross 400 even for a single day i.e. in the very serious category. Which is a big matter of relief.
