Even though there has been some relief in recent days regarding air pollution in Delhi, the government and administration are in no mood to give any kind of relaxation. Regarding the restrictions implemented under GRAP, it has been made clear that the action on the ground will continue as before until the situation becomes completely normal.

The number of challans and seizures made during the last three months reflects the strict policy of the administration. Delhi government and concerned agencies have made it clear that despite slight improvement in air quality, the provisions of GRAP will not be weakened.

Strict instructions given to officials

Officers have been instructed to remain in the field regularly and monitor the situation. Especially the emissions from construction activities, industrial units and vehicles are being closely monitored.

Challans for more than 12 lakh vehicles in three months

According to official figures, more than 12 lakh vehicles causing pollution have been challaned in the last three months. These include vehicles without valid pollution certificate, emitting smoke in excess of prescribed standards and falling in the banned category. This figure has come to light in the joint action of Transport and Traffic Department.

Strict crackdown on overage vehicles

During the campaign, special focus was given on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. If found violating the rules, not only were challans issued, but in many cases the vehicles were seized on the spot. The administration believes that overage vehicles remain a major source of pollution.

More than 7 thousand vehicles seized

More than 7 thousand vehicles have been seized in a period of three months. According to the officials, this step was taken so that people who break the rules create fear and do not violate it again just by paying the fine. The seized vehicles include private cars as well as commercial vehicles.

Action also taken on construction and demolition sites

Not limited to just vehicles, the administration also showed strictness on construction and demolition activities. Many C&D sites were closed for violation of rules, action was taken against concerned agencies for not making arrangements for dust control and not following the prescribed guidelines.

Keeping an eye on industrial units and DG sets

Pollution control teams have intensified inspections in industrial areas. Action was taken against DG sets running without permission or not following the standards. Some units were warned, while in serious cases instructions were also given to stop operations.

If the situation worsens, restrictions will increase further

Government officials have clearly stated that if the air quality again reaches the severe or very severe category, additional restrictions will be imposed. Ban on construction work, entry of heavy vehicles and other tough decisions can also be taken. The government says that there is no bigger issue than public health.

The situation in Delhi is bad due to pollution. The situation is such that even breathing becomes difficult here. AQI in the capital has reached its worst level in the last seven years in the month of December. This year, December was the worst since 2018 with an average AQI of 349, while the contribution of stubble in PM 2.5 pollution was only 3.5 percent.

An official said that in December 2018, the average air quality index (AQI) of the capital was recorded at 360. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the average AQI was 294 in December 2024, 348 in 2023, 319 in 2022, 336 in 2021, 332 in 2020, 337 in 2019 and 301 in 2015.

AQI remained in severe category for 5 days

This month, air quality in Delhi was recorded in ‘severe’ category for five days. There was such a situation in Delhi for six days in December last year. On Monday too, Delhi’s air quality reached ‘severe’ category with 401 at 4 pm, while on Sunday it was recorded in ‘very poor’ category with 390.

Increase in pollution due to stubble?

According to information provided by CPCB in response to an application filed under the Right to Information (RTI) by environmentalist Amit Gupta, the contribution of stubble to Delhi’s PM 2.5 pollution was only 3.5 per cent till December 5 this year, while Delhi-NCR remains one of the most polluted regions in the country.

The CPCB said it relied on the 2018 TERI-ARAI source apportionment study to assess the contribution of different sources to PM2.5 and PM10 pollution in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR). She said no comprehensive source apportionment study has been conducted since then.

There has been a decline in stubble burning in the last few years

However, daily average data from the Decision Support System (DSS) of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, shows that the contribution of stubble burning to PM 2.5 levels during the October-December period has declined steadily over the last few years.

The share of stubble burning was 13 percent in 2020 and 2021, declined to 9 percent in 2022, increased marginally to 11 percent in 2023 and 10.6 percent in 2024, after which it declined to 3.5 percent in 2025.

The pollution level in Delhi has once again reached the bad category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality in the national capital remained in the very poor category on Sunday and the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 390. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert of very dense fog for Monday.

The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi on Monday are likely to be around 22 and 7 degrees Celsius respectively. According to data from CPCB’s Sameer App, 19 monitoring stations in Delhi reported air quality in the severe category, with Anand Vihar recording the highest AQI of 457, while other places recorded very poor levels.

The Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 6.3 degrees Celsius, which was 0.5 degrees less than the season’s average, while the maximum temperature was 22.5 degrees Celsius, which was 2.1 degrees more than the season’s average. Humidity was recorded at 100 percent at 5.30 pm.

According to CPCB standards, AQI between 0 to 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 satisfactory, 101 to 200 moderate, 201 to 300 poor, 301 to 400 very poor and 401 to 500 severe.

The level of pollution in the capital Delhi has increased so much that people are now forced to stay in their homes to breathe. This situation has been made more difficult by the harsh cold and fog. Even on the morning of 28th December, people are facing the double blow of pollution and weather.

There was dense smog and fog in the morning, due to which visibility became extremely low and drivers had to travel with headlights on. On one hand, the plans of those celebrating the New Year away from pollution are also getting ruined because due to dense fog, flights as well as trains are running late by hours and getting cancelled.

Delhi’s air becomes deadly

According to the government app Sameer, the average air quality index of Delhi was recorded around 400 at 8.00 am on Sunday, which falls in the very poor category. This level of pollution clearly shows that the air is not fit to breathe. Due to persistently high AQI, the risk for the elderly, children and respiratory patients has increased.

The situation worsens in these areas

The situation in many areas of Delhi appeared more serious than average. AQI was recorded at 445 in Anand Vihar, while it reached 447 in Shadipur. Wazirpur 437, Narela 435, Jahangirpuri 433, Nehru Nagar 431, Rohini and Ashok Vihar 429, Vivek Vihar 428, Bawan and Okhla Phase 2 423, Patparganj 423, Punjabi Bagh 420, Chandni Chowk 418, DTU and RK Puram 414, Mundka 409, Dwarka Sector 8 and ITO 401 were registered. These figures show that almost the entire Delhi is in the grip of poisonous air.

Yellow fog alert issued

The Meteorological Department had already issued a yellow fog alert for December 28, which proved to be correct on Sunday morning. The minimum temperature was recorded at 7.8 degrees Celsius, due to which the intensity of fog further increased along with cold. The lack of cold winds and stable weather conditions kept pollutants trapped in the air, causing the layer of smog and fog to become denser. In such a situation, experts are advising to be careful and avoid unnecessary going out.

Living in Delhi-NCR is no longer difficult just because of traffic or inflation, but lack of clean air has become the biggest problem for the people here. The havoc of pollution returns with every winter, but this time the situation looks more scary than ever. The air has become so poisonous that people are forced to check AQI on mobile before breathing.

The situation has become very serious after the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached above 450 in the capital and surrounding areas. Keeping this in view, the government has implemented GRAP-4 (Fourth Phase of Graded Response Action Plan), which is considered to be the strictest step to deal with pollution. Along with this, shocking facts have come to light in a survey of community platform Local Circles. In which it has been found that 8 percent people want to leave Delhi and 52 percent are falling ill in some way or the other.

GRAP-4 implemented, restrictions and strictness

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) reported that AQI was continuously increasing. AQI was recorded at 431, which increased to 441 within a few hours. After this, considering the situation, it was decided to immediately implement GRAP-4 in the entire NCR. Under GRAP-4, trucks, loaders and heavy vehicles (except vehicles carrying essential goods) will not be able to enter Delhi. All construction and demolition work will be completely stopped. In government and private offices, only 50 percent of the employees will come to office, the rest will work from home. Schools up to classes 9 and 11 will run in hybrid mode. NCR District Magistrates can impose additional strictness in their respective areas. This order has been issued under the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

52 percent people sick in local circles survey

Shocking facts have come to light in a major survey of community platform LocalCircles. More than 52 percent people said that they or their close ones have fallen ill due to pollution. 82 percent of people’s family, friends or colleagues are suffering from some serious illness. 28 percent people said that 4 or more people among their acquaintances are sick due to pollution. Due to this, diseases like asthma, chronic respiratory disease (COPD), lung damage, heart failure and stroke are increasing. Doctors say that due to prolonged exposure to toxic air, these diseases are increasing rapidly, especially in children and the elderly.

8 percent people want to leave Delhi

The survey also revealed that 8 percent people are planning to leave Delhi-NCR. Many people have already gone to other cities. Hills and small towns are becoming the first choice of people. People say that they want to live in a city where there is no need to look at a mobile app to breathe.

Delhi Government Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has apologized to the public regarding the increasing air pollution and falling Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi, on which Congress MP Priyanka Vadra has now taken a dig. Priyanka Gandhi has said that what is the benefit of apologizing on behalf of Delhi government. They should get their work done and we all together should find some solution for this, but there is no discussion on this here.

Actually, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Delhi Government held a press conference on Tuesday (December 16, 2025). In this, Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa apologized to the people of Delhi regarding the increasing air pollution and decreasing AQI in Delhi. He said that our government in Delhi is fully engaged in improving the average AQI every month. While apologizing to the people of Delhi, I just want to say that it is absolutely impossible for any government to clean up all the pollution in 9 to 10 months, but I want to tell you, the people of Delhi, that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has been dishonest and deceitful, we have improved it and reduced the AQI and if we keep reducing it in the same manner, then only it will be possible to provide clean air to Delhi.

Targeted at Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi

During this, Delhi Government Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa targeted Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, citing the previous governments of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. He said, ‘These diseases in Delhi were caused by the Aam Aadmi Party for the last 10-11 years and the Congress government for the first 15 years.’

Delhi: Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa says, “…I want to apologize to the people of Delhi and say that it is impossible for any government to completely eliminate pollution in just nine-ten months.
He said, ‘Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are currently talking about wearing masks, so I want to ask them where were these masks of yours last year, when there was more pollution in Delhi.’ He further said, ‘Last year there were dirtier days than this. Last year, even on this day, AQI was 380, but neither Rahul Gandhi nor Priyanka Gandhi was seen anywhere, because these people were associated with Aam Aadmi Party at that time and today they have remembered everything.

We are taking action every day like a doctor- Manjinder Singh Sirsa

Manjinder Singh Sirsa said, ‘Of course there is pollution in Delhi, it is harming the health of children, but this is given by the Aam Aadmi Party, which we are trying to fix.’ He said that like a doctor, we are taking action against him every day, but Aam Aadmi Party has given the task of making people sick.

The level of air pollution in the country’s capital Delhi is again in the serious category. The problem of increasing pollution and stubble burning during the winter season has polluted the air of the city so much that it is facing a lot of difficulties. At the same time, the health and life of every person is being seriously affected. Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Ishaan Khattar has expressed his concern on this issue.

On Saturday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) level in Delhi was recorded beyond 400, which falls in the ‘severe’ category. In some areas this figure has reached more than 700. In such a situation, Ishaan Khattar has given his opinion by sharing a post on his Instagram story. Ishaan Khattar wrote in the post – ‘Not being able to breathe clean air is bad enough, but being forced to live with poisonous air is absolutely unbearable.’

Many celebs have expressed concern earlier also
This situation is no longer limited to just AQI numbers or reports. This has become a serious matter directly related to the health and quality of life of every person. The level of pollution in Delhi is increasing every year and if it is not taken seriously, its adverse consequences may increase further in the future. This post of Ishaan Khattar is becoming increasingly viral. Many people are also agreeing to this. Earlier, actresses like Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Sanon, Vaani Kapoor and Richa Chadha have also expressed their concern about the severity of pollution in Delhi.

Increasing pollution can be dangerous

According to experts, increasing pollution not only increases respiratory problems, but it also creates many serious health risks. Fine particles present in the air reach the lungs and promote diseases like bronchitis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Its side effects can be even more serious in children and the elderly.

Apart from this, exposure to polluted air for a long time also increases the risk of problems like heart disease, stroke and blood pressure. Its effect has also been seen on mental health. People who continuously breathe poisonous air suffer from problems like fatigue, headache and lack of sleep.

Today (14 December) in the capital Delhi and NCR, the sky will be cloudy throughout the day and the wind speed will remain high. According to the India Meteorological Department, there is no possibility of severe winter in the capital and surrounding areas at present and the temperature will remain slightly above normal till December 19.

This change is not only having a direct impact on the cold pattern, but increasing pollution has also increased the problems of the people. Both weather and air quality remain the most important concerns for Delhi-NCR at this time. It is as if Delhi-NCR is covered with a white sheet.

Current weather and wind speed of Delhi-NCR

In the last 24 hours, the weather of Delhi-NCR remained dry and clouds kept coming and going in the sky. During this period, an increase in the speed of winds has been recorded. The Meteorological Department estimates that the wind speed may remain at approximately the same level on Sunday also. There is no major drop in temperature at present.

The maximum temperature is expected to be around 23 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is expected to be around 9 to 10 degrees Celsius. This situation is considered equally applicable for the entire NCR region including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad.

Increasing attack of pollution and strictness of GRAP-IV

Due to decrease in wind speed and lack of cold, the level of pollution in Delhi-NCR has reached a dangerous situation. Today’s AQI has been recorded beyond 600 in many areas, in which the average AQI of Delhi has reached 651, Noida 781, Raghubir Nagar 720, Dwarka Sector-3 800 and Adarsh Enclave 1213. A thick layer of poisonous smog is clearly visible in the NH-24 area of Patparganj.

According to CPCB, AQI has been recorded in ‘Severe’ category in many areas. In view of increasing pollution, CAQM has implemented GRAP Stage-IV in entire Delhi-NCR. Under this, strict checking of trucks and other vehicles is being done on the Delhi-Haryana border. Hybrid mode has been implemented in schools for students up to classes 9 and 11. Public, municipal corporation and private offices will work with 50 percent staff, while central government offices will shift to work from home as soon as AQI reaches 301–400.

When will the weather change and when will there be severe winter?

According to weather experts, there is no possibility of a major drop in temperature at present and till December 19, winter will be mainly limited to nights. Dr. Mahesh Palawat, senior meteorologist of Skymet Weather, said that a new western disturbance has become active in the mountains, due to which rain and light snowfall has started there. There is a possibility of another western disturbance on December 18, due to which medium height clouds can be seen in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and north-western Uttar Pradesh.

However, there is no possibility of rain in these areas at present. There may be a slight increase in the minimum temperature due to cloudy weather. There is a possibility that the temperature will start falling gradually after December 15, whereas after December 22, the effect of severe cold can be clearly seen in many parts of the country.

The country’s capital has now started shivering. Starting to feel cold from morning to evening. There may be continuous fluctuations in the weather in Delhi-NCR this week. The temperature may drop to 6°C on 11-12 December.

According to the Meteorological Department, there will be fog and mist in the morning between December 9 and 14, while light clouds and cold winds will blow during the day. The new western disturbance reaching the mountains on December 13 will have an impact in Northern India but its impact in Delhi will be limited.

weather forecast

The weather in Delhi is likely to be clear to light cloudy from December 9 to December 14. The wind speed will be between 5 to 25 km per hour and dense fog in the morning can increase the problems of the people. On December 9, the winds will blow the strongest, while on December 10 and 11, the sky will be clear and light fog will be seen in the morning.

Light clouds will return between 12th and 14th December. The minimum temperature will remain on a continuous decline. The temperature is expected to reach 6°C on 11th and 12th December. On the other hand, the ongoing snowfall in the hilly states has further increased the effect of cold in the plains. IMD said that there is a possibility of rain in four states of the country today, due to which further drop in temperature can be recorded in Northern India.

The havoc of pollution continues

On the morning of 9th December, the density of smog and pollution increased along with cold in Delhi. AQI remains above 280 in most areas. The situation is worse in the northern areas because AQI is beyond 300. Delhi, which is struggling with pollution, is now going to have the effect of fog, due to which reduced visibility can be seen in the morning and afternoon. A steady decline in temperatures with local winds may continue for the next few days.

Fall in temperature and impact of western disturbance in NCR

Along with Delhi, the weather patterns in NCR’s Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad will also change significantly this week. Strong winds are expected in the initial days and later the cold will increase rapidly. The new western disturbance coming over the mountains on December 13 will not have much impact on Delhi, but a slight increase in temperature may be recorded. However, for the first two days, cold winds will bring down the temperature and morning fog may become dense.

NCR will have to face a mix of cold, wind, fog and light cloudy weather throughout the next week. Meteorologists say that due to drop in temperature and change in wind direction, people need to be cautious of severe cold in the coming days.
