The coming months may be difficult for electricity consumers in Delhi. Devendra Yadav has claimed that due to the inaction of the government, a sharp increase in electricity rates is now considered almost certain. He said that the Electricity Appellate Tribunal has rejected the petition of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission in which more time was sought to recover the outstanding amount of Rs 38,500 crore. After this decision, now the old dues will be recovered in less time, which will directly increase the pressure on the consumers.

Also read: Prashant Bhushan’s big statement on AAP MPs joining BJP, ‘Raghav Chaddha’s leadership…’

Effect of Supreme Court order, pressure of recovery in 4 years

Yadav said that according to the Supreme Court’s order of August 2025, the power companies will have to recover the outstanding amount in four years. Whereas DERC had asked for seven years’ time for this. They allege that due to lack of action by the government, the possibility of getting relief to consumers has ended and now its direct impact will be visible on electricity bills.

There is a possibility of increase in electricity bills by 70%

The Congress leader warned that if the government allows power companies to increase rates, electricity bills in Delhi may increase by up to 70 percent. Its impact can be seen on both residential and commercial consumers from April 2026. He also said that the companies are claiming that the rates have not been increased for many years, whereas the reality is that through PPAC and surcharge, there has been an increase of 30-40 percent in the last 2-3 years.

Questions on Discom’s profits, why burden on consumers?

Yadav alleged that power companies are continuously earning profits, but consumers were never given relief. He said that dues worth thousands of crores on BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, BSES Yamuna Power Limited and Tata Delhi Power Distribution Limited are pending for years. This amount is recorded as regulatory asset of around Rs 38,552 crore, which is now being said to be recovered from the consumers.

Attack on government’s silence, allegation of betrayal of consumers

He said that the government’s silence on the issue of reimbursement of discom debt from consumers is a direct betrayal of the public. His question is that when the companies were making profits, why were the consumers not given relief and now why are they being made to compensate for the loss.

Demand to stop rates and increase subsidy

Yadav demanded that the government should immediately stop the increase in electricity rates and make preparations to give subsidy in a planned manner. He says that this increase will prove to be even more heavy for the people of Delhi who are already facing inflation and economic pressure.

He said that if the government does not take any concrete steps soon, then in the future the people of Delhi will have to bear the burden of heavy electricity bills. He held the present government responsible for this situation and said that now it is necessary to take the decision in the public interest.
