The weather patterns seem to be changing rapidly across the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for many states regarding the coming days. While on one hand there is forecast of rain with strong winds in the states of South India, on the other hand large parts of North India will be in the grip of cold wave, dense fog and cold days.

According to IMD, due to the effect of deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal, the weather will remain active in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala for the next 48 hours. Light to moderate rain may occur with strong winds in many areas. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for many districts of Tamil Nadu from 11 to 13 January. There is a possibility of heavy rain in many areas including Chennai, Puducherry, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thanjavur.

Cold wave and fog wreak havoc in North India

Winter has once again gained momentum in North India. There is a possibility of cold wave and dense to very dense fog in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh from 11 to 15 January. The Meteorological Department said that cold day-like conditions will prevail in many states, due to which cold will be felt throughout the day. There is a possibility of frost falling in the morning and visibility being very low, due to which road, rail and air traffic may be affected.

Delhi-NCR hit by pollution along with cold

Along with winter, air pollution also remains at a serious level in Delhi-NCR. Despite light rain, there was no significant improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI). According to CPCB data, areas like Anand Vihar, Nehru Nagar, Chandni Chowk, RK Puram and Punjabi Bagh recorded AQI beyond 400, which falls in the ‘severe’ category. According to IMD, the minimum temperature may fall by 5 degrees Celsius in the coming days.

Cold day alert in Bihar, UP and Rajasthan

In Bihar, yellow alert has been issued in about 15 districts and orange alert in 16 districts. Life will be affected due to cold wave throughout the day in many districts including Patna, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Madhubani. There is an alert of dense fog and severe cold in about 30 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The minimum temperature in many parts of Rajasthan can reach 3 to 4 degrees Celsius.

Cold increased due to snowfall in hilly states

Due to continuous snowfall in the high altitude areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the temperature has gone below zero. Areas like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Lahaul-Spiti are experiencing severe cold. There is a possibility of frost falling in many areas and increasing slippage on the roads.

traffic will be affected

Due to dense fog and bad weather, many trains are likely to be delayed and some may be cancelled. Air services may also be affected. The Meteorological Department has advised people to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel.

Till now people used to think that pollution only affects and makes our lungs, breath and heart sick, but according to a research, pollution is also affecting the fertility of men and women. The most frightening thing is that pollution is also having a serious impact on the pregnancy of women, due to which the cases of abortion in hospitals are increasing rapidly. Due to the polluted air of Delhi NCR and AQI reaching critical levels, miscarriage or abortion among women is increasing rapidly, which is a matter of great concern.

What came out in China’s report?

According to a report published in China, severe level of pollution is no less than a threat to women. It was told in the report that excessive exposure to pollution or living in a polluted place is having a harmful effect on both the quantity and quality of eggs in the ovaries of women, which also reduces the quantity of eggs.

Impact of pollution on women in Delhi NCR

Delhi NCR is one of the places most affected by pollution in India, where according to many doctors, the number of pregnant women in hospitals is increasing. Among these, pregnant women are coming with problems like cold, fever and cough, due to which many IVF surgeries are being canceled because problems like cold and cough are increasing in women.

Effect of pollution on AMH hormone

According to research, when a woman is exposed to pollution for a long time, the level of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in that woman reduces significantly. Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone that determines how many eggs are left in a woman’s ovaries. If the level of this hormone decreases in a woman, it means that there are very few eggs left in the ovary, which directly affects fertility. Why are PM 2.5 and NO2 more dangerous? The biggest reason for the decrease of this hormone is the severe amount of pollution. When the level of pollution in the environment becomes PM 2.5, PM 10 and PM 1 and the amount of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is high, the level of anti-Müllerian hormone in the body automatically reduces.

Hormonal imbalance and effect on menstruation

Women are most at risk of hormonal imbalance in the body due to their living or coming in contact with places with high air pollution, which can lead to disturbances in the menstrual cycle. If there are too many pollutants like PM 2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the air, they have a harmful effect on progesterone and estrogen levels, which seriously impacts fertility.

The pollution level in Delhi-NCR, Noida and Greater Noida has reached a very dangerous level. AQI in Noida-Greater Noida has crossed 500, which falls in the serious category. In such a situation, people may now have to face a ‘triple attack’. First smog, second severe cold and third dense fog.

The problems of people already breathing poisonous air have increased further. With the increase in cold, dense fog has also set in. Visibility has reduced considerably due to fog and smoke on the roads. Due to which the drivers are facing huge problems. Vehicles are moving very slowly at many places.

People should take special care while driving – Government

According to the information, a few days ago there were serious road accidents due to fog and smoke on Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Highway, in which many people lost their lives. After these accidents, the administration and government had appealed to the people to take special care while driving.

Speed limit reduced on Yamuna Expressway

At the same time, considering the situation, the speed limit on Noida Highway and Yamuna Expressway has been reduced. Its objective is that vehicles move at controlled speed and chances of accidents are reduced. The traffic police is continuously monitoring and advising drivers to drive carefully.

Use fog lights while driving – Noida Police

Noida Police has appealed to the people to avoid unnecessary travel. Use fog lights while driving and maintain a safe distance. Experts say that this poisonous air can have the biggest impact on the elderly, children and people suffering from respiratory diseases.

Why People Are Leaving Delhi: The air in Delhi is very bad at this time. On one hand, North India is facing the brunt of cold, while on the other hand, Delhi is also facing the brunt of pollution along with cold. In areas like Anand Vihar, Ghazipur, India Gate and Duty Path, ITO and Akshardham Temple, the blanket of fog dimmed the sunlight a bit. The worsening air quality of Delhi is now forcing people to take difficult decisions. Many families have started leaving the city and settling in cities with clean air like Bengaluru. There are many families who lived their lives in the streets of Delhi but are now forced to leave the streets of Delhi to save their lives.

people leaving delhi

The story is no longer just about one or two families. Last week, a post went viral on social media, in which a professional said that his wife left a prestigious government job to leave Delhi’s polluted air, fearing for the health of their child. This post brought out the frustration and uneasiness buried within the people regarding the unsafe air of Delhi-NCR. The air quality of the city has been stuck in the poor category for the last several weeks. Now pollution is no longer just an issue of weather, but has started affecting people’s lifestyle and future decisions.

Many people move to other places until the winter passes, while some are deciding to leave the city permanently. Many people said while talking to the media, “Maybe I had become accustomed to the air of Delhi, but my parents’ health started deteriorating every winter. After the arrival of the child, it was decided that there was no point in stopping now. Got a job in another city and we took the same house there. There is no reason to come back.” Some people are forced to stay in the city, but life has not been easy. Some people move out of the city during pollution months for work. The rest seek respite by spending a few weeks in hilly areas like Ranikhet, Mussoorie, Chail or Kasauli.

not easy for everyone

However, it is not so easy for everyone to leave the city. As one user wrote on X that not everyone can leave the place. Most of the people are tied to jobs or compulsions. The real need is for efficient administration and strong policies. It’s easy to run away, but difficult to fix the problem.

The air of Delhi-NCR is continuously becoming poisonous and its effect is clearly visible on people’s health. According to a new survey, more than 80 percent of the residents of the area are suffering from problems like constant cough, fatigue and burning sensation in breath. This scary report has come to light in the Smytten PulseAI survey.

68% people had to take help of doctor

According to the survey, in the last one year, 68.3 percent people had to seek medical help for pollution related diseases. Experts say that these figures show that air pollution in the capital is no longer just a weather or meteorological department issue, but has become a serious health crisis.

76% people reduced their going out

The air has become so bad that people have started shying away from leaving their homes. The survey shows that 76.4 percent people have significantly reduced their daily outdoor activities. Many families say that leave alone letting their children play outside every day, even sending them to school is now becoming scary. Continuous smog and foul smelling air have confined people to their homes.

This study conducted on 4,000 residents of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad has revealed a truth which should make anyone worried. The report shows that the city is no longer struggling with external threats, but with its own bad air.

80% people are thinking of leaving NCR

The most shocking thing is that 79.8 percent people have either left NCR or are planning to leave it. 33.6% people are seriously thinking of leaving. 31% people are actively considering it.

And 15.2% residents have already settled in other cities. Many families have even started taking steps like looking at houses, finding schools for their children, exploring options in new cities.

Hill cities become favorite destinations

The survey also revealed that people now want to live in cities where the air is clean and there is no factories or dusty atmosphere. Hilly areas and small towns are becoming the first choice of people. Many people say that we want to live in a city where there is no need to check an app to breathe.

Air pollution has also had a huge impact on the pockets of the middle class of Delhi-NCR. 85.3% families said that household expenditure has increased due to pollution. 41.6% people admitted that this has caused severe financial pressure on them. Masks, air purifiers, medicines, doctor visits, everything together is ruining their budget.

What did the experts say?

Swagata Sarangi, co-founder of Smytten PulseAI, said, “This study shows that bad air is now changing people’s daily routine. Even decisions about health, spending, job, and living space are being affected. This has become not just an environmental problem, but a big question of quality of life.”

Like every winter in Delhi-NCR, this year too the air is becoming extremely poisonous. By November, a thick layer of smog covers the city and breathing becomes difficult. The air quality in cities like Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad has reached such a bad level that the government has once again had to implement strict rules of GRAP i.e. Graded Response Action Plan.

In many areas the AQI went up to 400–450, which is considered in the severe category. In such a situation, not only children, elderly and sick people but the entire population comes at health risk. Therefore, the Commission has advised that some rules in Grup-III should be made as strict as Grup-IV, so that pollution can be prevented from increasing further. Due to this, the most asked question now is whether work from home will be available in private offices also after GRP-3 is implemented.

What is GRAP?

GRAP i.e. Graded Response Action Plan is a system which is implemented in a phased manner according to the air quality. As AQI worsens, the rules become stricter. There are 4 stages in GRAP. In which Stage 1 is bad air, Stage 2 is very bad air, Stage 3 is severe air, Stage 4 is very serious or emergency level.

What happens in GRAP-3 and will work from home be available?

When the air quality goes from very bad to worse than severe category, then GRAP-3 is applied. This time the situation is so bad that it has been advised to add some rules of GRAP-4 to GRAP-3. The most important rule among these is the permission of 50 percent work from home, which is allowed in private offices, the state governments of NCR can decide to implement 50 percent work from home in their respective areas and in private offices also. If the central government wants, it can implement up to 50 percent work from home for its employees. Once GRAP-3 is implemented, work from home can be available in private offices also, if state governments decide to implement it.

Why is this decision being taken?

The wind has reached 400 to 450 at many places, which is a very dangerous level. AQI is record high in areas like Loni of Ghaziabad, Anand Vihar, Vivek Vihar, Rohini, Wazirpur of Delhi. AQI was measured above 430 in many sectors of Noida. In such a situation, the purpose of keeping work from home is to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, so that smoke spreads less in the air and the pollution level comes down.

In view of the increasing pollution levels in Delhi-NCR and the Air Quality Index (AQI) which has reached dangerous levels, the Supreme Court has asked the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) to consider giving instructions to carry forward sports activities in schools. While hearing on Wednesday (November 19, 2025), the Supreme Court said that the sports activities and competitions to be held in Delhi-NCR in November-December should be postponed for the time being and scheduled for later, so that the AQI improves by then.

According to the report of Live Law, Advocate Aparajita Singh told the court that sports activities and competitions are to be held in many schools of Delhi-NCR in November, while the AQI has reached a very poor condition.

A bench of Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran was hearing the case. Advocate Aparajita Singh told the bench that children are the most vulnerable and organizing sports competitions at such a time would be equivalent to putting them in a gas chamber. On their arguments, the court has directed CAQM to consider the sports competitions.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), till 9 am on Wednesday, Delhi’s AQI was 392, which falls in the very poor category. On Tuesday, AQI was 314 at 7 am and 374 was recorded at 4 pm. With this, the air quality in Delhi remained in ‘very poor’ category for the sixth consecutive day.

Data from CPCB’s ‘Sameer’ app also revealed that 18 out of 38 monitoring centers have recorded AQI levels in the ‘severe’ category. Centers located at Chandni Chowk, DTU, Bawana, Anand Vihar, Mundka, Narela and Wazirpur have recorded AQI above 400. According to CPCB, AQI between 0 to 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 to 200 ‘moderate’, 201 to 300 ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and 401 to 500 ‘severe’.

Talking about the weather, the minimum temperature was recorded at 10.2 degrees Celsius which is 2.1 degrees less than the average. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 26 degrees Celsius. India Meteorological Department said that the relative humidity has been recorded at 97 percent at 8.30 in the morning.

Pollution in Delhi-NCR is no longer limited to mere figures, but has now become a visible reality. A video is becoming increasingly viral on social media which is said to be of Dwarka Expressway. It can be clearly seen in the video how a thick layer of smoke is floating over the entire road. The darkness of the night, the light of street lights and this mist spread over it. The sight is so scary that people start holding their breath the moment they see it.

Deadly blanket of pollution seen in Delhi!

In the video, it is seen that the vehicles are running fast on the road but a layer of thick, white and dirty smog is spread in the sky above them. The brightness of the lights is making this smog layer more terrifying. This scene looks like a movie set, but this is a picture of the reality right next to Delhi. Users are saying that if the situation continues like this then even breathing in Delhi-NCR will be no less than a challenge in the coming days.

According to claims, the pollution level in Delhi and surrounding areas has reached dangerous category. The levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10 in the air are very high, due to which this ‘white layer’ forms over the road at night. This layer not only affects visibility but is also extremely dangerous for human health. Symptoms like respiratory diseases, eye irritation and headache are increasing rapidly.

The air of Delhi-NCR is continuously becoming poisonous. In such a situation, due to continuously increasing pollution in the air, the condition of people’s lungs is worsening. At the same time, the doctor says that the microscopic particles present in air pollution like PM 2.5, PM 10, nitrogen dioxide and ozone are gradually damaging the lungs. The risk increases even more for people who have the habit of smoking. In such a situation, the question arises that if the lungs get damaged due to pollution or smoking, can they recover again? So today let us tell you that if the lungs get damaged due to smoking habit or pollution, can they be cured again or not and what do the experts say about it.

How does pollution harm the lungs?

According to doctors, the pollutants present in the air reach the deep parts of the lungs through breath. This causes irritation, inflammation and oxidative stress which weakens the structure and capacity of the lungs. This risk is greatest for children, the elderly and people suffering from diseases like heart or asthma. The initial signs of lung damage include frequent dry cough or burning sensation in the throat. Apart from this, even doing light work causes shortness of breath. At the same time, heaviness in the chest or wheezing sound is also an early sign of bad lungs. Increasing mucus and feeling tired are also signs of bad lungs.

Can lungs recover after being damaged?

Experts say that the lungs have the ability to repair themselves. When a person lives in clean air, stays away from pollution or smoking, the functioning of the lungs can gradually improve. At the same time, improvement can be seen in the lungs within a few months to a few years. However, if the damage is very deep or chronic, such as COPD, it is difficult for the lungs to recover completely. But with proper treatment and precautions, its risk can be reduced to a great extent. According to experts, if a person quits smoking or tries to avoid pollution, the lung capacity starts improving within two weeks to 3 months.

What to do for lung health?

Stay away from smoking and second hand smoke.

Go out wearing an N95 or KN95 mask.

Use an air purifier with HEPA filter at home.

Do deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing exercises.

Drink enough water throughout the day, so that the dirt accumulated in the lungs can be cleared.

Reduce outdoor activity during pollution days.

The effect of continuously increasing smog and poor air quality index in Delhi NCR is no longer limited to only respiratory diseases or heart problems. A new research has revealed that polluted air has become a serious threat to pregnant women and the child in their womb. A study conducted by IIT Delhi, International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai, institutions of Britain and Ireland has revealed that fine particulate matter present in the air is proving dangerous for pregnant women.

Risk of premature delivery increased by 70 percent

According to research, the risk of premature birth of children increases by 70 percent in women who breathe more polluted air during pregnancy. At the same time, the chances of birth of children with low weight are also 40 percent higher. According to the study, with every 10 microgram per cubic meter increase of PM 2.5 in the air, the chances of premature birth increases by 12 percent. National Family Health Survey data also shows that between 2019 and 21, 13 percent of children in India were born prematurely, while 17 percent of children were underweight. According to experts, the main reason for this is the poisonous air of the country.

What is PM 2.5 and how dangerous is it?

PM 2.5 are very fine particles, whose size is less than 2.5 microns. This means that these particles are about 30 times smaller than the width of a human hair. These particles are released from vehicle emissions, smoke from factories, dust from construction work and burning of fossil fuels. Apart from this, their size is so small that they reach the deep parts of the lungs and enter the bloodstream. This affects the flow of oxygen in the body and increases swelling, which disrupts the process of delivering nutrients and oxygen to the baby in the womb.

What effect does pollution have on children?

According to the report of IIT-IIPS, exposure to pollution during pregnancy increases oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Due to which the functioning of the placenta gets affected. This has a direct impact on the development of children. This effect is most visible in the second and third trimester of pregnancy, when the baby is growing rapidly in the womb. During this period, exposure to pollution can cause problems like premature delivery, stillbirth and hindrance in the development of the child. Regarding this, experts say that this pollution obstructs the flow of oxygen and nutrients, which can affect the development of children’s organs and also increases the risk of congenital problems.

Most affected states

According to research, northern states like Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh are most affected by this. The level of pollution in these states often remains in the very bad or severe category. On the contrary, the clean air of North-East India has been found to be better for the health of the children born. Children born under low weight and prematurely face many health related problems not only in the beginning but also in the future. In such a situation, the risk of diseases like infant mortality, developmental delay, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease increases. Apart from this, according to the report, prolonged exposure of mothers to pollution can increase the risk of preeclampsia, high blood pressure and miscarriage.

Ways for pregnant women to avoid pollution

Pregnant women should avoid going out on days with high pollution.

Air purifier should be used in the house.

Apart from this, one must wear N95 or KN99 mask while going out.

Keep the windows and doors of the house closed and control the ventilation in the house.

Keep getting pregnancy checkups done from time to time.
