The first reaction of DU Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh has come to light on the confrontation that took place in the North Campus of Delhi University. The Vice Chancellor has expressed grief over this entire incident during the Literature Festival. He condemned the incident while giving a statement in the presence of thousands of students and teachers.

Vice Chancellor Professor Yogesh Singh said that the incident that happened yesterday is very worrying and such incidents should not happen. We talk about unity in diversity, about living together, but if we stop considering humans as humans, then there is no point in celebrating literary festivals and reading books.

He said that even small incidents are warnings and we should take them seriously. If we cannot understand the helplessness in the eyes of a girl, then what will be the meaning of our education and understanding? It is important to express concern and sorrow over this incident.

Do not do anything that weakens unity – VC

The Vice Chancellor asked the students and teachers present to raise their hands and take a pledge that social concerns will never be allowed to diminish. He said that this country is ours and we have to take care of it, no one else will come to take our responsibility. He clearly said that we will not do anything that weakens the sensitivity and unity of the society. If there is less humanity in the society then the purpose of education and literature will also remain incomplete, hence it is important to be alert.

What happened in Delhi University?

Two groups of students came face to face in the North Campus of Delhi University demanding implementation of UGC’s rules related to equality. A large number of students gathered during the day, the beginning was peaceful but as the crowd increased, sloganeering and debate led to a scuffle and the matter reached the Maurice Nagar Police Station.

According to eyewitnesses, there was a heated argument between the two parties and allegations and counter-allegations started. Meanwhile, a female journalist associated with a YouTube channel arrived for coverage and was allegedly misbehaved and attacked. After the incident, questions were raised regarding the safety of journalists and an impartial investigation was demanded.

The controversy over the facial recognition based entry system in Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has now taken a new turn. Taking strict action in this matter, the university administration has rusticated a research student for one semester, while the President and Vice President of the Students Union (JNUSU) have been fined. This matter came to light in August 2025 when students protested against the face recognition system being installed in the central library of the university.

In August, JNU’s Dr. B.R. Face recognition based access gates were being installed in Ambedkar Central Library. The students said that when the university does not have basic facilities like subscription to journals like JSTOR, adequate seats in the library, and even software for disabled students, then it is unnecessary to spend lakhs of rupees and install new technology. On this issue, students started protesting, which gradually turned into a confrontation. During this period, student union leaders Nitish Kumar and Manikant Patel were also injured.

The administration gave punishment

In an order issued on October 28, JNU Chief Proctor said that Manikant Patel, a PhD student at the Center for the Study of Regional Development (CSRD), is expelled for one semester and banned from the campus with immediate effect. Besides, a fine of Rs 15,000 has also been imposed on him. The order said that Patel was found guilty of scuffling with security personnel and library staff and breaking the main door by kicking. According to the administration, he misbehaved with the working librarian and obstructed government work.

At the same time, JNUSU President Nitish Kumar, who is himself a PhD student, has been fined Rs 19,000 and has been given a strict warning to stay away from such activities in future. The administration says that Nitish Kumar threatened the library staff, tried to forcibly open the gate and provoked Manikant. JNUSU Vice President Manisha has also been fined Rs 5,000 and warned that strict action will be taken if indiscipline is repeated in future.

Students accused the administration

After this action, Manikant Patel has accused the administration of distorting the facts. He said, we were only demanding our basic facilities. Instead of paying attention to our problems, the administration was spending crores of rupees on face recognition system. During the clash, a piece of glass hit my leg, but the notice says that the guards were injured.

administration side

The JNU administration wrote in its order that Patel’s behavior shows complete disregard for the institutional process. However, considering his future, a sympathetic attitude was adopted and he was given a punishment of only one semester.
