The protest by girl students intensified late on Thursday (May 21) at the University Hostel for Women (UHW) of Delhi University. A large number of girl students are sitting on strike outside the hostel premises since around 9:30 pm. The students say that the hostel administration is forcibly pressurizing them to vacate the hostel.

The protesting girl students alleged that the administration has taken steps like shutting off water supply, removing chairs from reading rooms and imposing additional fees, which is affecting studies and exam preparation.

According to the students, at present many students are preparing for semester exams and NET. At such a time, the administration stopped the water supply in two blocks of the hostel. He says that the situation has become more difficult due to water being cut off in the scorching heat.

The students also alleged that they were facing difficulty in studying due to removal of chairs from the reading room. He says that the decision to suddenly vacate the hostel in the month of May is wrong, because the fees for June and July have already been deposited.

Controversy increased regarding additional fees

The protesting girl students say that on May 16 also they had protested on the same issue. During that time, the hostel provost had given a verbal assurance of restoring the facilities and extending the period of stay.

But the girl students allege that later the administration issued a new order and imposed an additional fee of Rs 450 per day on the girl students staying in the hostel. The resentment among the girl students regarding this has increased further.

AISA also supported

Student organization AISA has also supported the girl students’ movement. The organization has demanded the resignation of the UHW provost. Also, the demand has been raised to restore 24-hour water supply and allow girl students to stay in hostels without any extra charges. At present the girl students are firm on their demands. The protest continued outside the hostel premises till late night.
