Snowfall in the hilly states has once again increased the cold in the plains. At the same time, the country’s capital Delhi has recorded the highest rainfall since January in the last four years. Delhi received the highest rainfall since January after 2022 and it increased to 24mm. In recent years, the most rainy day of January was 8th January 2022. This month, Delhi received 19.8 mm rainfall on January 23.

The sky remained cloudy in Delhi since the morning of Tuesday (January 27). The Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for many areas in the morning. The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung Weather Station was 16.9 degrees Celsius, which is 5.2 degrees Celsius less than normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 8.0 degrees Celsius, which was 0.4 degrees Celsius less than normal.

Temperature expected to rise on January 28

Although the maximum temperature was 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below normal and the minimum temperature was below 10 degrees Celsius, still it cannot be called a cold day because the temperature is likely to rise again tomorrow (January 28). An official of the Meteorological Department said that this is the first day when symptoms of cold are present.

where and how much rain occurred

It rained heavily at some weather stations from 11.30 am to 2.30 pm. 10.6 mm rainfall was recorded in Palam, 10.2 mm in Ridge, 4.2 mm in Safdarjung, 3.4 mm in Lodhi Road and 3.8 mm in Aryanagar. The rain gradually reduced between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm. The result was that 0.6 mm rainfall was recorded in Palam, 1.2 mm in Ridge, 0.1 mm in Aryanagar and 1.0 mm in Mayur Vihar. There was no rain at the rest of the station.

Cold increased after rain in Rajasthan also

It rained in Rajasthan also on Tuesday morning and the coldness increased due to cold winds. Light to moderate rain occurred at many places including many areas of the capital Jaipur on Tuesday morning. During the 24 hours till Tuesday morning, light rainfall occurred at many places in eastern Rajasthan while the weather remained mainly dry in western Rajasthan. There were cold day conditions at some places in Jodhpur division and light fog at some places in East Rajasthan. From tomorrow, January 28, the weather in most parts of the state is likely to be mainly dry and due to the influence of strong northerly winds, the temperature is likely to drop by 3-4 degrees Celsius and on January 29-30, there will be dense fog at some places. Due to the effect of another new western disturbance, there may be light rain at isolated places in the northern and eastern parts of the state on January 31 and February 1.

On Republic Day, Monday (January 26), Delhi was cold in the morning but the heat increased as the day progressed. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for possible thunder and lightning on Tuesday. The temperature rose gradually on Monday, while the air quality index (AQI) deteriorated and the 24-hour average remained in the ‘poor’ category at 241, according to IMD data.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain and low temperature in the national capital on Tuesday (January 27). The maximum temperature in Safdarjung was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, which is 1.1 degrees above normal and about five degrees more than the previous day.

Mixed trend in temperature in Delhi on January 26

Mixed trends were seen in temperature across Delhi on Monday evening. The day became relatively hot, while the night became cold. The maximum temperature in Palam was recorded at 19.3 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature in Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar ranged between 21.5 to 21.6 degrees Celsius, which was almost equal to or slightly below normal. The minimum temperature was much below the average at all the stations, ranging from 3.6 degrees Celsius in Ayanagar to 5.3 degrees Celsius in Ridge.

What is the minimum temperature in Safdarjung and Palam?

Safdarjung and Palam recorded minimum temperatures of 4.2 and 4.3 degrees Celsius respectively, more than four degrees below normal, indicating continuation of cold at night. IMD data indicates that no rainfall was recorded at any station during the day. Additionally, there is a possibility of rain in the national capital on Tuesday, due to which the Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert due to the intense western disturbance moving across North India.

Chance of cloudy sky

The sky is likely to be generally cloudy, with light rain, thunderstorms and strong winds at a speed of 30-40 kilometers per hour, especially from morning to afternoon. According to IMD, there will be a possibility of similar light rain and thundershowers from afternoon till night. According to IMD data, the minimum temperature is expected to be around 9 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach close to 19 degrees Celsius.

Light to moderate rain expected

Also, due to forecast of cloudy sky and rain, there is a possibility of feeling cool in the day, as the maximum temperature is expected to drop further. IMD said that this will be the second intense western disturbance of this season, which will cause light to moderate rain in the area. Delhi had earlier experienced a sudden downpour on January 23, when thunderstorms and heavy showers resulted in the highest January rainfall in the last two years, leading to a temporary drop in temperatures and reduced pollution levels.

deterioration in air quality

On the air quality front, Delhi witnessed a deterioration in air quality in the evening. Air quality was recorded as ‘poor’ at 23 stations, ‘moderate’ at 13 stations and ‘very poor’ at three stations. Jahangirpuri recorded an AQI of 321, the highest among all stations. The air quality deteriorated again on Monday and fell into the ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’ category from the previous day.

Considering the possibility of rain, the situation is expected to improve on Tuesday. According to the air quality warning system, Delhi’s air quality is likely to remain in the ‘moderate’ category from January 27 to 28, after which it will again fall into the ‘poor’ category on January 29.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is being recorded in the red zone in the entire NCR including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, due to which normal life is being directly affected.

Talking about Noida, AQI is in very poor category at all the active monitoring stations. AQI was recorded at 359 in Sector-1 Noida, while 352 was recorded in Sector-125 Noida, 347 in Sector-116 Noida and 342 in Sector-62 Noida. It is clear from these figures that the air of Noida continues to be poisonous.

The situation in Delhi is also very worrying. AQI has reached above 350 in many areas. AQI was recorded at 384 in Chandni Chowk, 376 in Ashok Vihar, 373 in Bawana, 386 in Punjabi Bagh, 383 in Okhla Phase-2 and 399 in Pusa. In Nehru Nagar Delhi, the AQI reached 397, which falls in the very serious category. Whereas, AQI was recorded at 345 in Anand Vihar and 332 in Alipur. In some areas like Mathura Road, AQI was 259, which is still in the poor category.

The Delhi government is preparing to trial artificial rain by 15 October. The government’s environment department is constantly monitoring atmospheric conditions and has sought update information from the Meteorological Department about the status of monsoon and withdrawal date, so that the civil aviation can be applied for a new time-limit acceptance for cloud-seeding (DGCA).

Delhi’s Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa told the media, “The department will test after the return of the monsoon so that it can get the best results. As soon as clear information is received from the Meteorological Department, the DGCA will again write a letter and seek necessary permission to conduct these artificial rain campaigns safely.

Artificial rain will be initiated under strict supervision- Sirsa

Minister Sirsa said that the last deadline will be decided on the basis of the trends of atmospheric data and scientific assessment of the situation of clouds. This active step of the government has been taken towards removing the concerns of falling ground water level and rising air pollution after the monsoon in the national capital. This initiative of artificial rainfall will be done under strict supervision and a detailed report of the Meteorological Department will be helpful in its implementation.

What was the minister Sirsa announced in July?

Earlier, in a press conference held in July, Sirsa announced that the test was postponed due to the arrival of monsoon. The test was postponed by the end of August as the expected results could be affected due to rain. The test to be held between July 4 and July 11 has been re -determined. In view of consultation with meteorological experts and the current weather, the project team proposed the revised period from 30 August to 10 September.

Sirsa further said, “The new period is likely to provide more suitable cloud structures for the cloud-seeding process.” This campaign will be done by the Aerospace Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur, with the experts of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorological Institute (IITM), Pune and India Meteorological Department (IMD), 206-A aircraft (VT-IIT).
