Severe cold has worsened the condition in many states of North India. For the first time, the minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius has been recorded in Delhi. India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that severe cold is expected to continue for the next few days. At some places in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand, the temperature has been recorded below zero degrees, while in Haryana and Punjab the temperature remains near freezing. There is a possibility of severe cold wave in many parts.

Weather in Delhi
The first cold wave of this season was recorded in Delhi. At many places the temperature dropped below 3.0 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature recorded at Ayanagar was 2.9 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature at Palam station was 3.0 degrees Celsius, the lowest in 13 years. According to IMD, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.8 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung Observatory, the main meteorological center of Delhi. The situation is expected to remain similar for the next 2 days. Yellow alert has been issued regarding this.

The temperature will fall further in UP
The mercury will fall further in Uttar Pradesh from Monday (January 12) due to the effect of cold westerly winds. There are chances of increasing melting and cold wave conditions in western UP. Most areas of the state got relief due to sunshine on Sunday. In the last 2 days, an increase of 3 to 5 degrees has been recorded in the maximum and minimum temperatures due to the effect of sunlight during the day.

The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of cold wave in 6 districts of Western UP, Ghaziabad, Amroha, Moradabad, Rampur, Bareilly and Sambhal. Also, there is a possibility of 3 to 5 degree drop in day and night mercury in the next three days. There is a possibility of light to moderate fog in 23 districts.

Atul Singh, senior meteorologist of Zonal Meteorological Science Centre, Lucknow, said that after the effect of the disturbance ends in UP from Monday, the wind direction will again become north westerly. Cold wave like conditions may arise in western UP. There will be some relief due to sunshine during the day, but it may remain bitterly cold till night. The effect of fog will be visible in the morning in the Terai areas.

Cold havoc in Punjab-Haryana
Due to severe cold in many parts of Punjab and Haryana, the minimum temperature remained below the average for this season.
