The government is going to tighten the rules to curb cyber fraud. According to media reports, if fraud or illegal activities are done using a user’s SIM card, then that user will also be held responsible. The Department of Telecommunications has advised people to be cautious regarding this. The department has said that if a user gives his SIM card to someone else and he misuses it, then along with him the user will also be responsible for it.

Need to be alert in these matters

The department has said that action will be taken against those using mobile devices with tampered IMEI numbers, purchasing devices with tampered IMEI numbers, purchasing SIM cards through fake documents or fraud. Also, if a user gives his SIM card to someone else and it is misused, then action will be taken against him also. Strict legal action will be taken against people doing such work. Along with this, the department has advised people to avoid using those apps and websites which change the calling line identity.

Provision of punishment and fine in law

Under the law, if a person tampers the telecommunication identifier, he can be punished with imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh or both. It is also prohibited by law to alter the IMEI, or to use, manufacture, or possess devices that alter the IMEI. According to the new guidelines, it has been made mandatory to register the IMEI number of every mobile phone, module, modem and SIM box manufactured in India on the Government’s Device Setu (ICDR) Portal before the first sale, testing or research. Similarly, the IMEI number of the device brought from abroad will also have to be registered.

It will now be easier for mobile users to identify spam, junk and marketing calls. Actually, now along with the number, the name of the caller will also be visible on the calling screen. For this, the Department of Telecommunications and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) have instructed telecom companies to start this service in any circle within a week. As soon as this service starts, the name as well as the number of the caller will start appearing.

Fraud will be controlled

The name visible on the caller screen will be the same as the user mentioned in his ID while purchasing the mobile number. This will be a default feature and if a user does not want to use it then he will have to deactivate it. Let us tell you that telecom companies have conducted trials regarding this service in Mumbai and Haryana last year.

TRAI accepted the advice of Department of Telecommunications

In February last year, TRAI had recommended this service named ‘Calling Name Presentation’ to the Department of Telecommunications. TRAI had said that it should be activated only when the user receiving the call requests for it. Responding to this, the Department of Telecommunications told TRAI that this service should be the default. If a user does not want to use it then he can deactivate it. TRAI has accepted this advice of the department.

Fraud calls can be controlled

This step of TRAI and Department of Telecommunications is expected to curb fraud calls. Now even before the user picks up the call, he will know whether someone he knows is calling or an unknown person is trying to contact him. In this way people will not fall into the trap of hackers and scammers and will be safe from cyber crimes.
