Anti-India rhetoric in Bangladesh for the last few days has increased the distance between the two countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached Dhaka on Wednesday (31 December 2025) to attend the funeral of Khaleda Zia. During this, he met Tariq Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia and acting president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). During the tension between the two countries, his visit is being considered very important from diplomatic point of view.

‘S Jaishankar’s visit should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations’

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tauhid Hussain has said that Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka should not be seen from the perspective of bilateral relations or politics. He also said that whether his visit will reduce the tension between the two countries or not will become clear only in the future. Mohammad Tauheed said that representatives of all South Asian countries including the Indian Foreign Minister had attended the funeral of Khaleda Zia.

‘S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh is a good sign’

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, he said, ‘Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Bangladesh was short, but he attended the entire program and then left. This is a good sign. We should not make any more sense out of his visit than this. When Mohammed Tauheed was asked whether there was any personal meeting with S Jaishankar, he said that there was no scope for face-to-face discussion.

‘Khalida Zia’s image was good even in neighboring countries’

He said, ‘Another foreign guest was present there. The Speaker of Pakistan was also there and he also shook hands with him. These are matters of etiquette which everyone follows. There was no political discussion during their conversation. Referring to late BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the Foreign Affairs Advisor said that her image was good not only in Bangladesh but also in neighboring countries. He further said that it was natural for regional leaders to be present to condole his death.

Tariq Rahman is considered a strong contender for the post of Prime Minister in the parliamentary elections to be held on February 12 in Bangladesh. During his meeting with Rehman, Jaishankar expressed confidence that Zia’s vision and values will guide the development of the partnership between the two countries. Jaishankar said in his post on social media, ‘I called him Prime Minister <a title="Narendra Modi" href="https://www.abplive.com/topic/narendra-modi" data-type="interlinkingkeywords"Handed over Narendra Modi's letter. I expressed deep condolences on behalf of the Government of India and the public.'

The atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are not showing any signs of stopping. In Shariatpur district here, a Hindu youth named Khokan Chandra was surrounded by a violent gang and then beaten brutally. The miscreants did not agree to this, they then attacked Khokan Das with a knife and then poured petrol on him and tried to burn him alive. This attack on a Hindu youth took place on Wednesday (31 December 2025), after which the youth somehow saved his life by jumping into the pond.

Fourth attack on Hindu within two weeks

According to the news of The Week, Khokan Chandra is the owner of a pharmacy and on December 31, he was attacked when he was going home from the shop. At present he is admitted in Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. This is the fourth attack on a Hindu in Bangladesh within two weeks. There has been an increase in violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus, which has angered people and many human rights organizations around the world.

India expressed concern over violence against minorities

India has expressed concern over the ongoing incidents of violence against religious minorities in the neighboring country Bangladesh. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘India is monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and has expressed serious concern over the ongoing hostilities against minorities including Hindus, Christians and Buddhists there. More than 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities have been recorded during the tenure of the interim government. These incidents cannot be ignored.

Sheikh Hasina blames Yunus government

At the same time, the Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh said that the things said by India do not reflect the real situation of their country. Ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the Yunus government has failed to protect religious minorities and allows extremists to decide foreign policy. He said, ‘Yunus has appointed such people to positions of power and has released convicted terrorists from jail. The concerns that India has about the safety of its personnel are justified. A responsible government will protect diplomatic missions and prosecute those who threaten them.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riyaz Hamidullah posted on Twitter that in Dhaka, Dr. S. Jaishankar expressed condolences on the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on behalf of the people and government of India and acknowledged her contribution to democracy.

Jaishankar’s first visit after Hasina’s departure
This is Jaishankar’s first visit to Bangladesh since Sheikh Hasina left power, which is considered very important amid the ongoing tension between the two countries. As soon as Jaishankar arrived, he met Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP supremo Tariq Rehman.

Did a handshake with Tariq Rehman
Jaishankar has come from India to pay tribute to Khaleda Zia. During the meeting with Tariq Rehman, his daughter Zaima Rehman was also present. During this meeting, Jaishankar and Tariq Rehman also shook hands with each other, pictures of which have surfaced. This meeting and handshake is considered important at a time when tension between Bangladesh and India is at its peak. Pakistan is making strong efforts to infiltrate the relations between the two countries and anti-India activities are taking place openly during the rule of Yunus.
Elections will be held in Bangladesh in February
Let us tell you that Tariq Rehman has returned to his country after 17 years and his party BNP will take part in the elections to be held in February. He is considered one of the strong contenders for the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In such a situation, this initiative of India is being considered as an effort to improve the future of relations with Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s first woman Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday (December 30) during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. A BNP post said, ‘Khalida Zia passed away at around 6 am, just after Fajr prayers. We request everyone to pray for her.’

BNP President Khaleda Zia was suffering from many problems like liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, chest and heart. He was admitted to the hospital on November 23 and was undergoing treatment for the last 36 days, but last night his condition worsened significantly.

Khaleda Zia was the first woman PM of Bangladesh
For the first time in the year 1991, Khaleda Zia became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Her husband Ziaur Rahman was the former President of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia’s first term was from 1991 to 1996 and for the second time she was the Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was founded by Zia’s husband and former President Ziaur Rahman in 1978.

Took over politics after husband’s murder
In the year 1981, Zia’s husband Rehman was murdered and after this Khaleda Zia became active in politics. In 1982, a military coup was carried out under the leadership of former army chief Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. In 1984, Zia became the president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Let us tell you that Zia has the title of becoming the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the second woman Prime Minister of Muslim countries after Benazir Bhutto.

Had political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina
The political rivalry between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina was known as the Battle of the Begums in Bangladesh, which influenced politics there for decades. BNP was the main opposition party in Bangladesh during the era of Sheikh Hasina. BNP had boycotted the 2024 general elections. Let us tell you that at present Khaleda Zia’s BNP is the largest party in Bangladesh. Zia’s son Tariq Rahman is being said to be the future Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Was famous as Deshnetri
Khaleda Zia was born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri in Dinajpur district of Bengal Presidency. His father Iskander Ali Majumdar was a tea businessman and mother was Taiba Majumdar. Jiya was the third among 5 siblings. The life of Begum Khaleda Zia has been a long story of struggle between victory, defeat, jail and illness. For her supporters, Zia was a patriot.

Bangladesh is currently going through its worst phase. Fundamentalism and violence are at their peak in this neighboring country of India. There are reports of targeting of Hindus every day. Meanwhile, on Tuesday (December 30), former PM Khaleda Zia died in Dhaka. His son and BNP leader Tariq Rahman is the frontrunner for the post of Prime Minister in Bangladesh. General elections are to be held there in February.

After the partition of 1947, Begum Khaleda’s family moved to Dinajpur city. Her original name was Khalida Khanum Putul. Khaleda Zia studied at Dinajpur Missionary School and Dinajpur Girls School. She was married to Captain Ziaur Rehman of Pakistani Army. After marriage in 1965, Jiya went to Pakistan with her husband. Then she changed her name to Khaleda Zia.

Became PM of Bangladesh 3 times
Khaleda became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh thrice. For the first time in 1991, when she became the first woman PM of Bangladesh. She became Prime Minister for the second time in February 1996 and her third term was from 2001 to 2006. Due to her Pakistani background, Khaleda Zia always had conflicts with India. The basis of his politics was anti-India nationalism.

Had refused to meet Pranab Mukherjee
This can be gauged from the fact that in March 2013, when former President Pranab Mukherjee was on a visit to Dhaka, Khaleda had clearly refused to meet him. When Khaleda did this, there was UPA government in Delhi at that time. Khaleda had then said that the Congress led Delhi government was giving more importance to the Hasina government of Bangladesh.

Begum Khaleda was always anti-India
During her tenure, Khaleda Zia gave priority to relations with Pakistan and China instead of India. Not only this, he termed the India-Bangladesh Friendship Treaty of 1972 as a treaty of slavery. Apart from this, he called the Ganga Water Sharing Treaty of 1996 a ‘slavery deal’ and also opposed the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Agreement.

Anti-India elements got a boost during Khaleda’s tenure. ISI established its strong presence in Dhaka. Apart from this, North-Eastern militant groups of India (like ULFA, NSCN) were also given shelter in Bangladesh.

When did you come to India?
In 2006, Zia visited India during her tenure as Prime Minister. During this time he met the then PM Dr. Manmohan Singh. Her most famous visit to India was in October 2012, when she was the leader of the opposition.

This big decision of India has deflated Pakistan, it is extremely worried, know what he is talking about now?

Inquilab Manch has announced a complete blockade in all the divisional cities of Bangladesh from today (28 December). Protests have intensified in the country demanding justice for student leader Sharif Usman Hadi and demonstrations are being organized by Inquilab Manch outside the capital Dhaka as well.

According to Bangladeshi newspaper ‘The Daily Star’, the organization said in a Facebook post that the blockade will start at 11:00 am local time on Sunday. According to the report of Prothom Alo, this announcement was made from Shahbagh intersection of the capital, where Inquilab Manch was protesting since Friday. On Saturday, mainly Inquilab Manch activists blocked roads in Dhaka, Sylhet, Chattogram and Kushtia and staged sit-ins demanding justice for Hadi, according to local media reports.

Tariq Rehman visited Hadi’s grave
The protesters who occupied Shahbag after Friday afternoon Friday prayers in Dhaka went to the front of Aziz Supermarket and allowed BNP leader Tariq Rahman to visit Hadi’s grave in Dhaka University area, the Daily Star reported. The protesters returned to Shahbag around 12:40 pm, causing a complete halt to vehicular traffic.

Inquilab Manch MP warned
Inquilab Manch MP Abdullah Al Jaber, while addressing the gathering in Shahbag, accused the government of not taking action and warned of intensifying the movement. “Today we are in Shahbag; tomorrow we can capture Jamuna (the residence of the Chief Advisor), Parliament or even the cantonment,” he said, according to the Daily Star.

Criticizing the government’s inaction, Jaber said that despite the protest continuing since Friday, no advisor has come to the protest site. “People were shivering from the cold on the streets while advisors were sleeping in their homes,” he said. He further said that public trust in the government is decreasing.

Singer James’s concert in Faridpur, about 120 km from Dhaka, was canceled in the wake of attacks on artists and cultural institutions in Bangladesh. According to local reports, the event was to be held at 9:00 pm on Friday night to commemorate a school anniversary. The attackers tried to forcibly enter the venue and threw bricks and stones at the crowd.

Locals said the students resisted the attackers, but ultimately the concert had to be canceled following instructions from local authorities. Writer Taslima Nasreen strongly condemned this trend growing in Bangladesh. In a post on the social media platform

What did Taslima Nasreen say while mentioning Siraj Ali Khan?
He further said, “Siraj Ali Khan had come to Dhaka a few days ago. He is the grandson of Ali Akbar Khan, son of the world famous Ustad Alauddin Khan. Siraj Ali Khan himself is an eminent artist of the Maihar Gharana. He returned to India without performing any program in Dhaka and said that he will not come to Bangladesh until the artistes, music and cultural institutions are safe.”

Taslima Nasreen said, “Two days ago, Ustad Rashid Khan’s son Armaan Khan also rejected the invitation to Dhaka. He also made it clear that he does not want to step into Bangladesh full of jihadists who hate music.”

James is very famous in Bangladesh
Let us tell you that James is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and composer from Bangladesh, who is also known as a playback singer. He is the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the rock band ‘Nagar Baul’. He has sung many hit Hindi film songs, like ‘Bheegi Bheegi’ from the film ‘Gangster’ and ‘Alvida’ from the film ‘Life in a Metro’. He is very popular in Bangladesh.
