Anil Sharma recalled, “He used to say, ‘Paaji, my house will run, my picture will be sold.’ Dharam ji used to do all those films for free, and he used to ask them to come wherever he was shooting and work with him for a few hours.”

The director remembered Dharmendra’s last days at home
Anil Sharma also recalled Dharmendra’s last moments and said, “I went to his house. He had recovered. He used to open his eyes and even move his hands. He was recovering, and the doctors were saying that Dharam ji is a very strong man.” He further added, “The doctors had assured us that he would recover, and even in the hospital, it seemed that he would recover. But age shows its signs, and you can’t fight it. Everyone was hopeful and we all thought that we would celebrate his birthday on December 8.”

About Dharmendra’s prayer meeting

Dharmendra’s prayer meeting was held on 27 November. In a poster released by the family, the event was called ‘Celebration of Life’ and featured a picture of Dharmendra in his young age. Celebrities from many generations had come to this prayer meet to pay tribute to the late actor. Aamir Khan further said- ‘He has done amazing work in comedy also. Oh God, he has done amazing comedy, romance and drama films. According to me, Dharam ji was exactly at the same level and was such a beautiful person. Today I was actually not in Bombay, but he had a prayer meeting. Unfortunately, I missed it. Aamir Khan further recalled the meeting of his son Azad and Dharmendra.

The superstar said- ‘I often used to go and sit near him. One day I also took my son Azad along with me. I said that I want you to meet someone, because Azad has not seen much of his work. But he came with me and we spent a few hours with him and it was really nice. Dharam ji was not only a great actor but also a great human being. He was very gentle, he was like a gentle giant. He was a very loving person, no matter who he met, whether it was a colleague or someone from outside the industry, he always met people with great warmth and gentleness.

‘A huge loss for all of us’
Aamir Khan did not stop here, he again said- ‘Dharam ji was an institution, his Satyakam teaches us even today, he was a wonderful person, he was a great actor and this is a big loss for all of us. • Despite this, Dharmendra could not become a superstar because when he came, Dilip Kumar had this title. Then this tag shifted to Rajesh Khanna and soon after that to Amitabh Bachchan.
• Despite giving many hits in the 70s, most of his films were multi-starrers. That means he had very few solo hits during this period. These films included films like Dharam Veer, Chacha-Bhatija, Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat and Mera Gaon Mera Desh. During this time Amitabh Bachchan was giving solo hits.
• There are more flops in Dharmendra’s career than there are hits in his career. After Mithun Chakraborty, he became the actor with the most flops in Bollywood. He had 150 flop films in his account.

• Apart from this, B grade films also became a hindrance in Dharmendra getting the title of superstar. In the 90s, he was doing B grade films one after the other. He was getting money from all the films like Loha and Jallad No. 1, but stardom was going away. By then new faces like Shahrukh had achieved superstardom. Who had become a new competitor for Dharmendra.
• In the late 90s, Dharmendra started playing character roles in films like Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya and that period continues till now. Because of this Dharmendra could never get superstardom. He went to meet his first producer and was waiting for the signing money. They thought that they would get a huge payment, but something else happened. While waiting for the first signing money, he got only Rs 51.

Dharmendra told in an article titled ‘My childhood and youth’ published in the Urdu film magazine ‘Ruby’ in May 1977 that his first producer was T.M. Bihari and his associate Thakkar emptied their pockets and gave him Rs 51. Bihari had paid Rs 17 and Thakkar had paid the rest. He told that he was excited in the hope of getting Rs 500, but his first fee was so nominal. This incident became one of the fondest memories of his early struggles.

Respect was expressed for Hingorani
When Dharmendra signed the film ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’, the film ‘Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere’ was released as his debut. The film was directed by Arjun Hingorani and also starred Balraj Sahni and Kumkum. This was Hingorani’s first Hindi film, whereas before this he had made India’s first Sindhi film ‘Abana’.
