Aditya Dhar’s ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise has been ruling the box office since its release. This film earned bumper not only in India but worldwide. Now Mukesh Ambani has praised this film a lot.

What did Mukesh Ambani say in praise of ‘Dhurandhar’

Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, in a letter to the shareholders, laid special emphasis on the excellent achievements of this franchise. Talking about the recent successes of Jio Studios, Ambani credited the ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise for setting new benchmarks in the entire industry.

He said, ‘Jio Studios has created a unique record of delivering the highest grossing film for three consecutive years, ‘Stree 2’ in 2024, ‘Dhurandhar’ in 2025, and ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ in 2026. This proves our continuity and undisputed leadership. In the Financial Year (FY) 2025-26, Jio Studios released record-breaking spy action thriller films ‘Dhurandhar’ and ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ (together the Dhurandhar franchise), which have created new benchmarks in box office performance, release strategy, monetization model and customer engagement across the globe.’

Ambani also talked about the unique strategy of production and release of this franchise. He claimed, ‘Never before in the world, leave alone India, had a film franchise been conceived, financed and shot as two parts and released within such a short interval of each other.’

Talking about the box office performance of the films, he further wrote, ‘Its first part alone made the record of becoming the highest grossing Indian film of all time. This film created an unprecedented record of running in theaters for 15 consecutive weeks, after which its second part came to the theaters amidst great curiosity and it also shattered all the records made by the first part.

Dhurandhar franchise box office collection

• According to reports, ‘Dhurandhar’ franchise, made with a combined budget of around Rs 350 crore, has become the biggest blockbuster film of Indian cinema.
• Its first part made a spectacular gross collection of Rs 1,307 crore worldwide,
• Its sequel Dhurandhar 2 crossed the Rs 1,800 crore mark at the global box office.
• In this way, the entire franchise has strengthened its blockbuster reputation forever by earning a total of more than Rs 3,100 crore.

The films also received a tremendous response from the audience, especially the characters of ‘Jaskirat’ and ‘Hamza’ played by Ranveer Singh were praised, who played the most important role in making this franchise popular in every household.

Ranveer Singh’s film ‘Dhurandhar’ created a stir at the box office. The film and its sequel ‘Dhurandhar: Revenge’ together grossed over Rs 3,000 crore worldwide, making the franchise one of the biggest commercial successes of Indian cinema. Co-producer Jyoti Deshpande said that in view of the increasing production expenses, the makers along with Ranveer Singh and director Aditya Dhar adopted a risk-sharing model. Also, the film which was initially going to be made in one part, was later decided to be divided into two parts.

Ranveer Singh took less fees in ‘Dhurandhar’
Recently, in a conversation with ET Digital, Jyoti Deshpande said that both Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar decided to take a low upfront fee for the film and instead chose to share in the profits through a backend deal. He said, “Ranveer had come to ‘Dhurandhar’ with a low fixed fee and a backend deal, due to which he got the benefit of that agreement. Aditya also chose low fixed fees and backend. They got good profits by working with us. This is how you distribute both risk and reward.

He said, ‘We bet completely for Dhurandhar. The cost of making the film was almost double what we had initially thought. But later it changed into two parts. In the end we all got good benefits from it.

He said, ‘Dhurandhar was written as a single story. It was conceived and budgeted as a film. But when we completed the first shooting schedule, we realized that the budget had increased much more than originally estimated. He said, ‘The footage that came from the first schedule was amazing. Looking at the story, we felt that it had so much potential that it could be made into a two-part film.

He said, ‘Initially it was completely based on Pakistan. We were talking about the ‘deep state’, which is a concept that has been around for years. He also said that explaining a geopolitical thought to a general audience was a big challenge in itself, and this is what drew him towards this project.

Jyoti Deshpande praised the film
Also praised the unique narrative structure. He said, ‘I liked its chapterized format very much. I’m a fan of this kind of storytelling, and it’s done very well in Western films. In today’s time, people have become accustomed to watching such content on OTT, which is episodic and immersive. This allows the audience to spend more time with that world and characters. That’s why I liked such an idea in which the film does not just have a beginning, middle and end, but completely immerses the audience in that world.

He said that the makers were confident that ‘Dhurandhar’ could become a long-running franchise. ‘We felt that if we could get it right, it could become a franchise that would continue to attract audiences for years. Like ‘James Bond’ or ‘Mission: Impossible’ these are such franchises.
