The entire North India including the capital Delhi is in the grip of severe heat and heatwave these days. In this month of May, the situation has become such that it seems as if fire is not raining from the sky, but sunlight. Usually in summer there is strong sunlight during the day, but after dusk the weather becomes a little cool. However, this time the weather pattern is completely different. People of Delhi and North India are facing the ‘double whammy’ of heat this time, because the heat is not reducing even after the sun sets. Let us know from the doctor how dangerous it is for your health?

Temperature reaching 40 degrees even at night

This time’s heat has broken many previous records. The problem is not just about the strong sunlight, but about the ‘hot nights’. Even at night, the temperature in many major cities of North India including Delhi is reaching between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius. When the temperature does not drop at night, the human body does not get time to cool itself and recover, due to which the risk of falling ill increases manifold.

According to the data of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heat is wreaking havoc on the mountains also. The minimum night temperature in Jammu and Kashmir is being recorded 3 to 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal. At the same time, in states like Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the night temperature remains higher than normal by 1.6 degrees to 3 degrees. Due to concrete jungles, buildings and roads throw out the heat absorbed during the day at night, making the nights even more oppressive.

Red and yellow alert issued in many states

Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Meteorological Department has issued strict warnings for many states.

Red Alert: ‘Red alert’ of severe heatwave has been issued in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha area of Maharashtra. This means that the heat in these states has reached life-threatening levels and people should not go out without essential work.

Yellow Alert: There is a ‘yellow alert’ in hilly states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand as well as many other areas of North India, where the weather was usually cold.

Expressing concern over the current situation, Dr. Naresh Kumar, senior scientist of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), has said that at present there are no signs of major change in the weather pattern. This deadly trend of heat during day and night is likely to continue for at least the next 7 days.

Doctors’ warning: There is a serious threat to health

This form of heat is like a medical emergency for health. According to Dr. AK Shukla, HOD of Internal Medicine Department of Kailash Hospital, Noida, this time the heat has become a big and serious threat to health not only during the day but also at night. When body temperature does not return to normal at night, the risk of dehydration and heat stroke increases. Doctors have especially advised those people who are already suffering from some disease to be more careful. If you have hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes (sugar), or any heart related disease, then this season is very dangerous for you.

How to protect yourself and family from heatwave?

There is no hope of relief for the next one week, hence prevention is the best medicine. Health experts have suggested some easy, but very important solutions.

Hydration is most important: Even if you don’t feel thirsty, keep drinking water every now and then. Do not let there be shortage of water in the body. Apart from water, consume ORS solution, lemonade, buttermilk, lassi and coconut water regularly.

Cover head and body: If there is a compulsion to go out of the house during the day, then avoid coming in contact with direct sunlight. Cover your head well with a cap, towel or umbrella. Always wear cotton, light colored and loose clothes.

Take care of your eating habits: Avoid eating too much fried, roasted and spicy food. Include watery fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber and cucumber in your diet.

Don’t ignore the symptoms: If you suddenly notice symptoms like severe headache, dizziness, feeling of vomiting, excessive sweating or sudden cessation of sweating and rapid heartbeat, then do not take it lightly. This could be heat stroke. In such a situation, immediately go to a cool place and seek medical help.
