About 2 to 2.5 crore people are affected worldwide due to this disease, most of them live in Asia and Africa.

Earlier it was believed that this disease is due to low body reaction to insulin (insulin resistance). But now it is learned that insulin cannot be made in the body of these people, which was not paid earlier. In New York -based ‘Albert Einstein College of Medicine’, Professor Midith Hawkins, says, “This discovery completely changes our way of understanding the disease and shows a new way about its treatment.”

How to treat patients?

In a study published in a journal called ‘Diabetes Care’ in 2022, Dr. Hawkins and his colleagues (from Christian Medical College in Vellore) proved that the disease is completely different from type-2 diabetes (which is caused by obesity) and type-1 diabetes (which is an autoimmune disease). However, doctors still do not understand how to treat patients with type-5 diabetes, because many patients do not survive within a year of detection of the disease.

According to Hawkins, the disease was “not well identified properly nor was it well understood. Diabetes from malnutrition is more than TB and almost HIV/AIDS is as common. Due to no official name, there was difficulty in identifying patients or finding effective treatment.” To understand this disease well and find cure for it, the IDF has formed a team. This team has been tasked with formal identity and treatment rules for type 5 diabetes in the next two years.

This team will decide the criteria for the identification of the disease and make rules for its treatment. It will also create a global registry to help in research and prepare study material to train health workers around the world.
