In fact, recently the Petroleum Ministry has held a media briefing, in which it has been told that government oil companies are incurring a loss of about Rs 30 per liter on diesel, Rs 6 per liter on petrol and about Rs 700 on domestic LPG cylinder. Putting all these together, companies are facing losses of Rs 600-700 crore every day.

In the press conference, Additional Secretary of Petroleum Ministry, Praveen Mal Khanuja said, ‘There is a loss of about Rs 30 per liter on diesel. In Delhi, when you buy diesel for Rs 95, the company actually bears the remaining Rs 30, and in the case of petrol this loss is still around Rs 6 per litre. The daily loss is still around Rs 600-700 crore.

The reason is the blockage in the Strait of Hormuz
There is a blockage in the Strait of Hormuz due to the Iran-US war, due to which the prices of crude oil have increased in the global market. This has also affected India’s government oil companies (OMCs), because they are selling fuel at relatively lower prices to domestic consumers. This has increased the financial pressure on these companies.

Meanwhile, let us tell you that on June 7, government oil companies have increased the price of domestic LPG cylinder by Rs 29. This is the second time since the beginning of the crisis in the Middle East, that the prices of LPG have been increased.

Oil crisis increasing worldwide due to Iran-Israel war

A good news has come for India amid the blockade imposed by Iran on the movement of crude oil, gas and commercial ships to countries around the world through the Strait of Hormuz. In the coming days, two LPG tankers carrying the Indian national flag are preparing to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier, after a phone conversation between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi, two Indian ships had come out of the Strait of Hormuz. However, no tanker loaded with crude oil has passed through this route in the last 24 hours.

Both Indian tankers are standing anchored in the Gulf area.

Aljazeera, quoting data analytics firm Kpler, has reported that these two Indian flagged LPG tankers are currently anchored in the waters of the Gulf region and are waiting for the situation to improve. An empty crude oil tanker, which is subject to US sanctions, returned to Iranian waters through the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday (March 18, 2026).

Industrial diesel is not sold at common petrol pumps. It is purchased directly by factories, big generators, mining companies, construction sites and power plants. Earlier, oil companies had increased the prices of branded and high-octane category premium petrol by about ₹ 2 per liter. However, at present there has been no change in the prices of normal petrol, which has provided immediate relief to the common consumers.
