X-ray: the oldest and most reliable test

X-rays are a type of electromagnetic rays that pass through the soft tissues of the body but are blocked by hard structures like bones. For this reason bones are clearly visible in X-ray. This test is done in less time, costs less and is available in almost every hospital. X-rays are used to detect bone fractures, dental problems, lung and heart related diseases. Apart from this, mammography is also based on X-ray technology for early detection of breast cancer in women.

The biggest advantage of X-ray is that it is done quickly and the amount of radiation is also relatively less. However, its limitation is that soft tissues like muscles, nerves or organs are not clearly visible in it. Repeated X-rays can be risky, especially for children and pregnant women.

CT scan: more informative test

CT scan is considered an advanced form of X-ray. In this, the rotating X-ray machine takes pictures of the body from different angles, which are combined by the computer to create a three-dimensional image. This gives a very clear picture of the internal organs of the body.

CT scan is used in the diagnosis of serious injuries, accidents, tumors, cancer, brain injury, stroke, kidney stones, appendicitis and stomach related diseases. This test helps doctors to understand the exact condition of the disease. However, the amount of radiation in CT scan is more than X-ray and this test is also expensive. In some cases, contrast dye is used, which can also cause allergy problems.

Which test is necessary in which disease?

If there is a bone fracture, tooth or general lung problem, then X-ray is sufficient. But when the disease is complex, there is internal injury, cancer or brain related problem, then CT scan becomes necessary.

However, both X-ray and CT scan are necessary tests in their place. Considering the patient’s condition, severity of the disease and risk, the doctor decides which test will be most appropriate.
