Board of Peace: US President Donald Trump has announced the formation of ‘Board of Peace’ during the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland. The purpose of this board is said to be to work towards resolution of ongoing wars around the world and to play a role in the reconstruction of war-devastated areas.

Under this initiative, Trump had initially sent an invitation to Canada to join the board, but the US President withdrew the invitation before any official response was received from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Trump said this

Sharing a post on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’, Trump wrote, “Prime Minister Carney, please consider this letter as proof that your invitation to join the Board of Peace Canada is being withdrawn. This Board will be the most prestigious global leadership forum ever.”

Consent of 35 countries, Europe’s distance

As of Thursday morning, about 35 countries have agreed to join this board. These include major countries of West Asia like Israel, Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. However, many European countries, considered traditional allies of America, are still maintaining distance from this initiative. These countries have neither completely agreed on the membership nor have they agreed to the fee system of the board.

Heavy fees for permanent membership

According to the draft proposal, any country will have to pay at least one billion US dollars to become a permanent member of the board. It is believed that Trump can remain the chairman of this board for life, while the tenure of other members will be three years.

Invitation sent to 50 countries

A White House official said that about 50 countries have been invited to join the board. However, no response has been received from many countries yet. The list of which countries will finally get membership has not been released yet. Some countries have agreed, some have refused, while many countries are still considering.

Carney’s Davos speech becomes cause of controversy

The recent Davos speech of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is believed to be the root of this entire incident. In his speech at the World Economic Forum, Carney had appealed to the so-called ‘middle powers’ to unite against the threats of the superpowers. Although he did not mention Trump by name, he took aim at foreign policies that use tariffs as weapons of pressure, financial infrastructure as coercion and supply chains as vulnerabilities.

“Stop calling for a rules-based international system. There is no such thing. Call the system what it is: an era in which the most powerful countries use economic integration as a weapon of coercion to pursue their own interests,” Carney said in Davos.
