Why Stomach Infections Increase in Summer: It often happens during the summer season that many people suddenly start having stomach related problems at home or office. Some complain of vomiting, some diarrhea, and some stomach cramps. Most people take it to be a direct reason for eating, but the reality is much more complicated than this. Let us tell you about it.

What do experts say?

Dr Akash Chaudhary, clinical director and senior consultant at Care Hospital, told TOI that what we commonly call food poisoning is often a combination of multiple causes. Heat, way of storing food, quality of water and surrounding environment all play a role in this. Actually, heat is not limited to just making one feel uncomfortable, it also has a direct impact on the safety of food. As the temperature increases, bacteria start growing rapidly. Many times the food looks and smells fine, but the microbes in it have grown to dangerous levels. According to Dr Chaudhary, even a small gap between cooking and eating food in summer can increase the risk.

What causes the problem?

People often think that illness is caused only by food, but many times the real reason is water. Drinking water, ice added to beverages, or raw fruits and vegetables that have not been cleaned properly can all become sources of infection. The special thing is that we are not as careful about water as we are about food, and this mistake proves costly.

Impact from lifestyle too

Eating habits also change in summer. Eating out, eating while traveling or taking something from the roadside has become common. Most of the time everything is fine, but sometimes one of these things causes a problem and it becomes difficult to find out what the real cause was. If several people in the same house fall ill together, it is not necessary that the same food is the cause. Many times this infection spreads from one person to another, which is usually caused by a virus. Dirty hands, shared surfaces and lack of cleanliness are the major reasons behind this. Dr Chaudhary clearly says that in such cases the disease is not spread through any particular food but through contact.

When should one contact a doctor?

Apart from this, the body itself is under more pressure in summer. Lack of water, irregular eating and high temperatures make the digestion system sensitive. In such a situation, the same food, which never caused any harm earlier, can now cause problems. The good thing is that in most cases this problem resolves itself in a few days. But if there is persistent vomiting, high fever, blood in the stool or signs of dehydration in the body, then it should not be ignored and a doctor should be contacted immediately.

What Diseases Are Caused By Contaminated Water: The audit conducted under the Namami Gange program in Uttarakhand has revealed many serious concerns regarding the condition of the Ganga river. According to the CAG report, the amount of coliform bacteria in the Ganga water between Devprayag and Haridwar was found to have increased by about 32 times. Apart from this, many sewage treatment plants are not following the standards set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The report also revealed that about 32 percent of STPs are releasing untreated sewage directly into the Ganga. This audit was conducted during the review of the implementation of Namami Gange program in Uttarakhand between 2018 to 2023. This report was presented in the Uttarakhand Assembly held in Gairsain during the budget session.

What is mentioned in the report?

It was also told in the report that many parts of this scheme could not be implemented properly in the cities situated on the banks of Ganga. Some of the cremation grounds built under the State Clean Ganga Mission are being utilized very little because adequate awareness about it was not spread among the people. Apart from this, expected progress could not be made in the works related to afforestation under the project. According to the report, out of the expenditure earmarked for the scheme, only about 16 percent could be effectively utilised.

What diseases does it cause?

According to the World Health Organization, the UN’s specialized health agency, contaminated water and poor sanitation can cause the spread of many serious diseases. These include diseases like cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. If water and sanitation services are inadequate or poorly managed, people may face a number of health risks. This problem becomes even more serious in health care institutions, where the risk of infection increases for both patients and health workers.

According to statistics, out of every 100 patients, about 7 patients in hospitals of developed countries and about 15 patients in hospitals of low and middle income countries become victims of some infection during treatment. A major reason for this is also considered to be the lack of facilities related to water and sanitation.

Why is water getting contaminated?

WHO report said that due to lack of proper management of dirty water coming out of urban, industrial and agricultural areas, drinking water of crores of people is getting polluted. Sometimes chemicals naturally present in groundwater can prove to be hazardous to health. For example, elements like arsenic and fluoride can be found in groundwater. Some chemicals, such as lead, can also get into drinking water through contact with the water supply system.
