Firecracker Health Risk: Diwali is a festival of happiness, people celebrate it in their own way. Many people celebrate this festival by lighting lamps and eating sweets, while there is a large population which uses firecrackers extensively on this day. But the way firecrackers are used in this festival, it proves to be dangerous for both health and environment. These include many types of firecrackers, but the most dangerous firecracker is the snake firecracker. Let us tell you how there is a risk of cancer due to this.

Why is snake firecracker dangerous?

Now the question arises that how is a firecracker containing a snake dangerous? This is a very small firecracker in appearance. On burning it, it starts expanding and comes out waving like a snake. People enjoy watching it, because it does not make much noise and it continuously releases smoke. The only problem is that it emits smoke. The root of all diseases is hidden in this. Regarding this, a research named “Personal exposures to particulate matter <2.5 µm in mass and chemical composition during the burning of individual firecrackers” was conducted. It is said that mainly nitrates, sulphur, heavy metals and carbon-based chemicals are used to prepare it. When it is burnt, it releases poisonous smoke of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and heavy metals.

What problems does this cause?

This does not cause just one problem, but many types of problems. Like poisonous organic compounds can accumulate in the body for a long time and cause cancer. Besides this, its smoke weakens the lungs and can increase problems like asthma, bronchitis and allergies. The smoke coming out of it causes irritation and watering of the eyes and can also cause allergies on the skin. Along with this, the most cautious thing is that this firecracker is even more dangerous for small children, because their immune capacity is weak, hence they need more protection.

Which chemicals are in firecrackers?

Many types of chemicals are found in firecrackers. These contain potassium nitrate, which causes respiratory diseases. Sulfur is on the second number, which causes harm to the lungs. At number three is charcoal, which can cause migraine and cancer. Strontium nitrate is also found at number four, which causes risk of cancer. Apart from this, barium, copper and perchlorate are also found in it.
