It has been claimed in the video that if belching occurs after drinking hot water, it means that toxins are trapped in the body. If there is no burping, then it is being said that all the body parts are working perfectly fine. But doctors are calling this claim completely wrong and against medical science. What is the real meaning of burping?

Belching, which is called belching in medical language, is a normal process of the body. This occurs when excess air or gas accumulated in the digestive system comes out. In most cases, this is due to unintentional swallowing of air. Eating quickly, drinking cold drinks or soda, chewing gum, smoking or talking while eating, all these lead to swallowing of air, which is called aerophagia. Many times, due to anxiety or stress, a person swallows air again and again. This air accumulates in the stomach or food pipe and comes out in the form of belching.

In some cases, gas is formed inside the stomach during digestion, which is called gastric belching. This can happen when undigested carbohydrates are fermented by bacteria in the intestines or in cases of acid reflux and infections like H. pylori. Doctors clearly say that belching has no direct relation with the release of toxins from the body or liver or kidney failure.

What does science say?

Research published in medical journals like Neurogastroenterology & Motility suggests that most cases of excessive belching are related to supragastric belching. In this, air does not come from the stomach but upwards through the food pipe. It is related to habits and behavior, not to a malfunction of the organs. According to the American College of Gastroenterology, belching is normal and harmless, unless it is accompanied by symptoms like stomach pain, sudden weight loss, vomiting or trouble swallowing.

Dr. Ashish Sachan, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Karuna Hospital, Dilshad Garden, says, “These tests are not done to determine whether or not there is belching after drinking hot water, nor do they assess the health of the liver or kidneys. What is being called ‘belching test’ on social media is actually a misunderstanding of the medical breath test. According to him, these tests are done on the advice of a doctor.”
