Causes Of Antibiotic Resistance: In India, treatment of many common infections like UTI, pneumonia, sepsis...

Causes Of Antibiotic Resistance: In India, treatment of many common infections like UTI, pneumonia, sepsis and diarrhea is no longer as easy as before. Medicines that affect bacteria found in hospitals are becoming increasingly weak. This picture has been clearly shown by ICMR’s AMR Surveillance Report of 2024. The report includes analysis of samples of about one lakh patients collected from big hospitals of the country. It was revealed that the biggest threat is from gram-negative bacteria, which are now defeating even many strong antibiotics.

E. coli, which causes the most common infections, has already shown resistance to many drugs. At the same time, Klebsiella pneumoniae, which is a major cause of pneumonia and sepsis, neutralizes even drugs like piperacillin-tazobactam in three-fourths of the cases. Even on ‘last-line’ antibiotics like carbapenems, its effectiveness is continuously decreasing, leaving very few treatment options for patients. The most worrying conditions were seen in the ICU. Acinetobacter baumannii found here was found to be 91 percent resistant to strong drugs like Meropenem. In such cases, doctors are forced to resort to more toxic and difficult drug combinations. Resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa is also continuously increasing, making the treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonia more difficult.

According to the report

72 percent of bloodstream infections were caused by bacteria that do not respond to common drugs.

Acinetobacter, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas were responsible for most of the ventilator-associated pneumonia cases.

Many germs causing diarrhea were also found resistant to popular drugs like fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins.

There is hope for slight improvement in some places, like E. coli has shown better response to amikacin and some cephalosporins, but overall the picture is becoming more serious. The risk of fungal infection is also increasing. Candida auris remained resistant to drugs in about 10 percent of cases, while about one-third of Aspergillus samples were found resistant to important drugs like Amphotericin B. ICMR said that this data is of infections in hospitals, the picture of the general community may be different from this. Yet, according to experts, the signs are very clear that the antibiotics used daily in India are losing their efficacy, and serious patients are suffering the direct effects of this.

What are superbugs?

Superbugs are bacteria that are resistant to many types of antibiotics. When a patient gets infection due to these then normal medicines do not work. Due to this, the treatment gets prolonged and the disease becomes difficult to control.

Major superbugs seen in India

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus

Drug-resistant TB

Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae

Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus

These bacteria do not respond to many medications, making it even more challenging for doctors to choose the right treatment.

With the beginning of Antimicrobial Awareness Week, concern is once again being raised across the world about the increasing misuse of antibiotics. WHO has been making people aware every year since 2015 about the danger of anti-microbial resistance i.e. AMR. This problem has now become so serious that according to a study made public in Science Direct, by the year 2050, most of the deaths in the world may be due to this reason. In such a situation, let us tell you today whether you too are taking more medicines than necessary. If you do this then the antibiotic may become ineffective on your body.

What is anti microbial resistance?

According to experts, when the bacteria or viruses in our body become so strong that medicines do not work on them, then it is called anti-microbial resistance. Antibiotic medicines taken for common cold, fever or infection often cure us. But if they are used excessively or incorrectly, bacteria develop resistance to these medicines. According to WHO report, in 2019, 12.7 lakh people died directly due to anti-microbial resistance. At the same time, it became an indirect cause in 49.5 lakh deaths. This is why it is being called the silent pandemic of the future.

The threat of antibiotics is increasing in India too

Billions of doses of antibiotics are being used every year in India and this figure is continuously increasing. According to a report published in Latest e-Clinical Medicine regarding this, multi-drug resistant organisms have been found in 83 percent of Indian patients. This means that common antibiotics have lost their effect on these patients. This condition is being considered a big threat not only for the patients but also for the health system of the country. According to this study, India is at the center of superbug explosion. The prevalence of MDROs in patients undergoing endoscopic procedures is higher than in other countries. MDRO has been found in 83 percent of patients in India, while this problem has been seen in 31.5 percent of cases in Italy, 20.1 percent of cases in America and 10.8 percent of cases in Netherlands.

What warning did the doctor give?

Experts have warned about this problem that if the right steps are not taken now, then this situation will go out of control in the coming years. At the same time, the new report of WHO also says that South East Asia, which includes India, is one of the most affected areas. At the same time, experts say that not every disease requires antibiotics. Many times viral fever or cold gets cured on its own in 2 to 3 days. At the same time, taking antibiotics without doctor’s advice becomes even more dangerous.
