How Lactoferrin Tablets Help Treat Dry Eyes: Nowadays people are facing eye problems at an early age. This problem is increasing due to the use of mobile, laptop, TV etc. After the encouraging results of a trial conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi, scientists are now preparing to launch a new medicine in the market for the treatment of dry eye problem. This medicine is based on lactoferrin, a protein derived from milk, which has been specifically developed to maintain eye moisture and reduce inflammation.

How was it prepared?

Actually, this tablet has been prepared from lactoferrin protein obtained from cow’s colostrum, which is called first milk. Colostrum is considered a treasure trove of nutrients and bioactive compounds, which help in repairing the body and increasing immunity. According to Dr. Sujata Sharma, a scientist associated with this research, a partnership has been made with a Japanese company to develop this medicine. The research paper based on this trial is currently under review for publication in a scientific journal.

Dry eye is a common but irritating problem, which occurs when tears are not produced in sufficient quantity or their quality is not good. This causes burning sensation, redness and heaviness in the eyes. Nowadays, the habit of watching the screen for a long time is further increasing this problem, because it reduces the blinking rate significantly. In this trial conducted on about 200 patients at the RP Center of AIIMS, under the leadership of senior eye expert Dr. Namrata Sharma, the patients were given 250 mg lactoferrin daily for three months.

What improvement happened due to this?

In this, both the ability and quality of tears to form in the eyes of the patients improved. At present, most people resort to eye drops or sometimes steroids to treat dry eyes, but these only provide temporary relief and can also have side effects. In comparison, this new lactoferrin based therapy has emerged as a safe, effective and economical option.

What is lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is a natural protein, which helps in increasing immunity, reducing inflammation and repairing cells in the body. This is why scientists are now researching its other uses, such as the treatment of anemia. Initially an attempt was made to extract this protein from human milk, but this was not possible due to limited availability and ethical reasons. After this, cow colostrum was adopted as an effective and accessible alternative. At present, the researcher hopes that after getting the necessary approval, this medicine can soon be available in the market, which will provide relief to millions of people from the problem of dry eyes.
