Hidden Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Many people assume that if their Vitamin B12 report is normal, then their health will also be fine. But Apollo Delhi surgeon Dr. Anshuman Kaushal, who is known as The Angry Doc on social media. He warned that normal reports do not always tell the truth. Many people continue to struggle with problems like fatigue, tingling feet, forgetfulness and irritability, while their reports seem absolutely normal.

Functional B12 Deficiency: When the report is fine, but there is deficiency in the body

Dr. Kaushal said in a video, “Have you seen people who are always tired, forgetful, depressed, but B12 comes normal in their report? This is functional B12 deficiency.” He explained that B12 is present in the blood, but the cells of the body are not able to use it. Giving an example, he said, “The B12 level looks perfect on paper, but in reality the salesman has nothing. Like having money in the bank account but no ATM card, looking rich, feeling poor.”

Why are normal tests not reliable?

According to Dr. Kaushal, most labs give reports only by measuring serum B12, whereas the real deficiency occurs at the level of cells. He said, “B12 and folate work like Batman-Robin. From DNA repair to making RBC and protecting neurons, both work together. If even one of these is deficient, the brain goes into ‘Gotham mode’. Stress, numb hands and legs, tingling all come for free.”

Which people are at greater risk?

Dr. Kaushal explains that some groups already fall in the risk zone. Among them, those taking metformin or acidity medicines, those on vegan diet and those who have undergone bariatric surgery are on the third. He says that if symptoms persist but the report is normal, then testing for MMA, homocysteine or active B12 is necessary. He said, “Many times tablets do not work and injections are required. The problem is not the vitamins, but the observation.” Functional deficiency means that your cells are not using B12 properly. Don’t go by the numbers, function matters. Save your neurons and don’t rely on B12 gummies for energy. This is biochemistry, not Bollywood.

Other doctors have also warned

Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist from Apollo, also told X that complaints of fatigue, forgetfulness and lethargy are common due to B12 deficiency, and normal reports do not always tell the whole story. He said that a large part of the B12 present in the blood remains attached to a protein which does not transport the vitamin to the cell. Due to this, B12 appears normal in the report, but the body does not get its benefit. This is the reason that despite the test being correct, fatigue and problems related to brain function may persist.

What is Vitamin B12?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, B12 is an essential nutrient that keeps nerves and red blood cells healthy and helps make DNA. The body does not make it itself, so it has to be taken from food such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy and fortified foods. Generally, adults need about 2.4 micrograms of B12 daily, while pregnant and breastfeeding women need more.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: The problem of forgetfulness and slowing down of thinking is often considered to be the effect of age, stress or work pressure, but sometimes the real reason for this is the deficiency of Vitamin B12. This nutrient, which is essential for the health of the brain and nerves, is found in less quantity especially in the elderly, vegetarian people and patients suffering from some medical conditions. If it is identified in time, then major problems like weakening of memory and reduced thinking ability can be avoided.

Scientific studies have consistently revealed that along with age or stress, lack of nutrition also affects the functioning of the brain. Among these, most attention is being given to the deficiency of Vitamin B12. It is a water-soluble vitamin, which we mostly get from meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. It helps in protecting the brain cells, transmitting nerve signals properly and controlling the level of homocysteine in the body. When there is a deficiency of B12 in the body, all these processes get disturbed and as a result problems like weak memory, taking time to think and reduced concentration increase.

How does Vitamin B12 affect the brain?

Vitamin B12 supports the brain and nervous system in many ways. One of its active forms, methylcobalamin, helps convert homocysteine into methionine in the body. This process is important in making DNA and preparing neurotransmitters. When B12 is low, homocysteine starts increasing, causing further damage to brain cells. This affects memory, learning ability and attention. Many studies suggest that increased homocysteine can cause changes in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, which are parts of the brain that handle memory and thinking.

Adenosylcobalamin, another form of vitamin B12, is involved in energy production and the myelin sheath, which is the layer that protects nerves. Helps in keeping it strong. Due to its deficiency, the signals in the nerves become slow, due to which forgetfulness, lack of attention and decline in thinking ability are seen. In many cases, if deficiency persists for a long time, the risk of dementia may also increase.

Who are most affected by B12 deficiency?

The amount of stomach acid often decreases in the elderly, due to which B12 from food is not absorbed properly.

Vegetarians and vegans are also at risk because B12 is not naturally present in plants.

Digestive system problems, such as celiac, Crohn’s disease, pernicious anemia or intestinal surgery, also affect absorption.

B12 levels can also decrease if metformin or acidity medicines are taken for a long time.

Diabetes, kidney problems and environmental factors like pollution also increase the risk.

That is, B12 deficiency often occurs not due to a single reason, but due to a combination of many reasons.

How to recognize early signs of B12 deficiency?

In the beginning, very mild symptoms are seen, such as forgetting things, not being able to concentrate, slowing down thinking or difficulty in solving problems. Along with this, there may also be changes in mood like irritability, sadness or anxiety.

How to prevent it?

Eat a diet rich in B12. It is found in abundance in meat, fish, eggs and dairy. Vegetarian people should take fortified food or supplements.

If needed, take supplements, it can be taken in any form, pill, drop or injection.

It is necessary to get the risk group tested, the elderly, patients with digestive diseases and people taking medicines for a long time should get tested from time to time.

While you touch someone while shaking hands with someone, do you feel an electric shock too? Many times this shock is so strong that people consider it a symptom of a disease. However, many research has also revealed that vitamin B12 deficiency can also be due to such electric shock sensation. Let’s know what is the reality in this?

What is electric shock sensation?

Electric shock sensation is called Lermit Sign in the medical term. In this, any person feels like an electric shock in his body. It usually starts from the spinal cord and spreads to the legs or arms. This feeling occurs when the person tilts his neck forward. It is also called ‘Barber Chair Finomanon’. This feeling can last for a few seconds and can be felt several times a day. Many research has revealed that this feeling can be a sign of any disturbance in the nervous system. It can also be behind nerve damage, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury or vitamin B12 deficiency.

Why is Vitamin B12 necessary for body?

Vitamin B12 is also called cobalmin. It is water soluble vitamin, which is very important for a human body. Vitamin B12 is very effective for becoming red blood cells and healthy nervous systems. It helps in creating mayeline sheaths covering the nerves. The important thing is that there is no production of vitamin B12 in our body. It gets from supplements by eating. People with vegetarian and vegan diet are more at risk of its deficiency, as this vitamin is not found naturally in plants. An adult requires an average of 2.4 micrograms of vitamin B12 daily.

Due to deficiency of vitamin B12

Many research has revealed that more than 15 % people in India are suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency. Most of these people are vegetarian. Actually, vitamin B12 is often found less in people taking veg or vegan diet. If someone has a percentile anemia, Crohn disease, sealic disease or gastritis, then their body is not able to absorb vitamin B12 correctly. Apart from this, production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach can be reduced with aging, which is very important for the absorption of vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 connection with electric shock sensation

According to experts, the deficiency of vitamin B12 can have a serious effect on the nervous system, as it is necessary to make and take care of the Meline Sheath. In such a situation, due to deficiency of vitamin B12, myeline sheath can be damaged. In medical term, it is called demyelination. This condition causes disturbances in nervous signals, due to which an electric shock can be felt.
